When you really dig into the science of laundry, it turns out it’s about a lot more than having the best machine and separating lights from darks. The details most people don’t think twice about—like how much detergent and cycle they’re actually using, or even how clean the inside of the machine is—matter more than you’d expect. In fact, these overlooked habits can quietly affect how well your laundry is getting cleaned over time.

One of the most common mistakes is assuming the detergent drawer stays clean simply because it’s constantly exposed to soap and water. In reality, it’s one of the biggest buildup points in the entire machine.

“The detergent dispenser should be cleaned, because detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, and standing moisture can create a sticky film that contributes to odors, mold, and mildew growth over time,” says Noah Pinsonnault, a product analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care and Cleaning Lab. Detergent and fabric softener don’t always fully rinse away during a cycle, which means they gradually collect in and around the dispenser itself, he explains. Over time, that buildup can also affect how the machine works, since it can interfere with proper dispensing performance.

It’s a simple fix, especially considering many people don’t even realize the drawer is meant to come out. The release mechanism can be subtle or hidden, so it’s easy to treat it as a fixed part of the machine rather than something that needs regular cleaning—just be sure to check the owner’s manual before trying to force anything loose, says Pinsonnault.

How to clean the detergent drawer

  1. Start by fully removing the drawer, then rinse it under warm water to loosen residue.
  2. Use a soft brush or an old toothbrush to work through any remaining buildup, especially around corners and small compartments. Avoid using any more complicated tools, since sharp edges or abrasive scrubbers can damage plastic parts and smaller internal components, which can create bigger issues down the line.

How often to clean the detergent drawer

How often this needs to be done depends on usage, but it doesn’t need to be frequent to be effective. For most households, a monthly clean is enough. If you use your machine heavily or notice visible residue or lingering odors, your dispenser drawer may require more regular attention.
