When furnishing a living room from scratch, you'll likely hit this age-old question: sofa or rug first? We asked interior designers across the country, and the room split right down the middle. One thing every designer agreed on: plan the room before you buy either piece.
"You can buy them in whatever order you choose," says Bennett Leifer, principal of Bennett Leifer Interiors. "The trick is to make sure the room is properly planned out before purchasing either... Doing so without thoughtful consideration of the other could lead to a missed opportunity." Still, most designers land on one side or the other. We asked seven to make their case.
Team Sofa
Here’s why this camp thinks you should start with seating.
The sofa is the bigger investment
"Most of the time, I'm Team Sofa First," says Carol Alda, an interior designer at Z Gallerie. "It's usually one of the biggest investments in the living room, and there are so many practical things we need to get right: size, comfort, seating, layout, fabric, lifestyle. Once we have the sofa figured out, choosing the rug becomes much easier."
She'll still make an exception: "If you find an incredible rug and immediately fall in love with it, buy the rug!"
It sets up how the room functions
John O'Hanley, senior interior designer at Vesta Home, points out that the sofa shapes more than the color scheme. "The sofa also starts to dictate how the rest of the room is going to function," he says. "Where do the chairs go? How are people moving through the space? What are the sightlines? That all starts with that anchor piece."
Rugs are easier to swap
Kate Kelly, founder of Kate Kelly Interiors, makes the case for longevity: a sofa is the piece you'll live with longest, while a rug is easier to swap out later. "Rugs... can more easily be changed or replaced as needed since they are readily available in larger quantities... and are sold at a wider range of price points," she says.
Her tip: bring a fabric swatch to the rug store, not the other way around. "There are few things worse than buying a large rug at the store, rolling it out at home, and then deciding it needs to go back."
Team Rug
Other designers start with the rug because it's the room's biggest wild card.
A finished room makes rug-shopping harder
"It usually goes a lot smoother when we start with the rug first," says Kelly Smethills, principal designer at Huron Interiors. "Finding a rug to fit an already finished room is like apartment hunting with a long list of non-negotiables: right neighborhood, right light, right amount of space, right price. It exists, but you often won't find it quickly or affordably."
A rug can set your color palette
Lisa Quinn, a Palm Desert-based designer and former host of "HOME with Lisa Quinn," treats the rug as the room's foundation. "From it, you can pull your entire color palette, set the scale for the space, and create the entire mood of the room," she says. "Sofas come in so many different colors now that it makes more sense to buy the rug first."
The rug is the room’s "active element"
Molly Miller, founder of Molly Miller Interiors, calls the rug one of a room's "active elements." "They help set the overall direction of the scheme: the color palette, pattern, scale, and feeling of the space," she says. "Once those elements are established, I build the furniture around them."
A rug can determine your sofa fabric
Celeste Jackson, founder of Celeste Jackson Designs, uses the rug to unlock a specific styling move. "Sometimes I find inspiration from a gorgeous rug, which anchors the room and is used to pull all of the other elements in the space together," she says. "Most of the time, my clients like more of a solid-tone fabric versus a patterned sofa, which makes it easier to coordinate with a beautiful rug that inspires your design."
The bottom line
Seven designers, two answers, and the same underlying advice from all of them: plan the room, not just the piece. Compare the rug and sofa together before either purchase, whichever one you buy first, and you'll avoid the letdown of a rug that fights your sofa or a sofa that swallows your rug.
