In a perfect world, dogs would live forever. The healthiest dog breeds won’t make it quite that long, but many of them do have long lifespans. While nothing is ever a guarantee, these breeds are likely to spend many years by your side.

The longest-living dog breeds tend to be small or medium-sized dogs, though there are a few larger breeds that typically have longer lifespans. Many of the dog breeds on this list commonly live for 12 to 15 years, and a few have been known to make it 18 or even 20 years.

While certain breeds are prone to health conditions, many of the dogs on this list tend to live most of their lives without major medical issues. Of course, like humans, dogs are more likely to need medical management as they age.

Many of these dog breeds have a way of keeping their owners young. When you have to walk a few miles each day to keep your Australian Shepherd or Siberian Husky happy, you might find that your health improves, too.

Ahead, learn more about the healthiest dog breeds. For more inspiration, read up on the best dog breeds for seniors and the best dog breeds for families.
