It’s official – mid-length hair has steered away from being ‘middle of the road’. The mid/long bob is having a high-volume upgrade this season, with the ‘bombshell midi’ being the best new option for anyone with fine or thinning hair.
That’s the word from celebrity hairdresser and trendspotter Philipp Haug, co-founder of Haug London Haus. ‘We’re seeing a shift away from wispy, shaggy textures toward the “bombshell mid-length” – a look that prioritises structure, swing and a polished, expensive finish,’ he explains.
Why is the bombshell midi so popular?
As Philipp explains, this style hits the right balance between external, face-framing softness and internal density, so you get lift without stiffness.
‘We’ve been seeing mid-length hair a lot, but what makes the bombshell midi special is that it’s a big, bouncy blow-dry with lots of volume. That makes it really modern and cool,’ Philipp says.
In other words, this isn’t just about popping a casual tonged bend into mid-length hair, it’s about adding inner oomph first with the hair dryer. ‘Everybody’s so into blow-dries at the moment, we’ve really seen an increase in people asking for them at the salon, and I think that’s why this look works so well.’
The bombshell midi is a popular A-list look, too. ‘We’re seeing lots of celebrities rocking the bombshell midi, like Trinny Woodall and Keira Knightley, who both have that mid-length hair that they wear with a lot of body and movement,’ he says.
Does the bombshell midi work for fine or thinning hair?
This is always a huge question for us at GH, and Philipp confirms this style ticks the box. ‘It works really well for naturally fine or thinning hair!’ he says. ‘A lot of women who have longer hair that’s lacking volume like the idea of cutting it to a mid-length – but then still want to have softness and femininity in the hair. That big, bouncy “bombshell” blow-dry gives that.’
Going a bit shorter makes it so much easier to pump up the volume. ‘If you’re worried about hair looking thin, this length is perfect to hold a bouncy blow-dry and give the illusion of fullness,’ he explains.
Does the bombshell midi suit grey hair?
‘Absolutely,’ says Philipp. ‘The finish and styling is so cool and so fresh, and with grey hair it looks really classy.’
What face shapes does bombshell midi suit?
Great news: ‘The bombshell midi works on every face shape because the mid-length doesn’t affect the face shape,’ he says. ‘Where you can play with it is at the front. What’s beautiful is that it can be adjusted to complement the features, either worn with a short fringe, a sweeping curtain fringe, a heavy fringe…’ Take your pick!
How do I get the bombshell midi style?
A pro blow-dry is the easiest, but you can copy that fullness at home as well. Prep your hair with a heat-protecting volume spray mousse to lock the look in place.
‘A good trick is to get lots of volume through the top of the head especially, so try blow-drying and then using velvet rollers as it cools,’ says Philipp.
‘It really gives that bombshell volume through the top and the height. Even if you’re blow-drying with a round brush, leave the brush in each section momentarily while the hair cools to set into place.
