Like most women in their 50s, I’ve seen changes in my hair over the past decade. It’s become thinner, duller and drier, with that rougher texture that comes with rampaging greys. When I make the effort to add polish with heat styling, sleekness frizzes up fast and my curls drop out more quickly, too. All round, I often feel my hair is giving away my age – and I’d really rather it stayed schtum.
So what’s to be done? Realistically, I can’t ever expect to sprout a thick, Amal Clooney mane (my hair was always fine to begin with), but I do miss having brunette hair that shines. I’d also like to remind it of a time when I could reach for styling gadgets in the morning and expect my hair to still be in the same shape by the time I reached the office.
Which brings me to a clever-sounding new Tresemmé range, which promises to jog your hair’s memory and remind it to behave nicely again. Please. Not too much to ask for, right?
The star of this lineup is Thermo Sculpt Memory Hair Serum, which sounds like just the job for my hair’s style amnesia. It has a smart new ‘KeraKinetic’ technology that wakes up in contact with heat. Introduce it to your irons or tongs and crystal-like molecules re-form into your hair’s cortex, creating a new shape and keeping it in place.
At further risk of betraying my age, I’m immediately thinking of the T-1000 in Terminator 2 that turned to liquid, then magically sprung back to shape. Good hair, you’ll be back!
Before I could get on to my barnet’s judgement day, I first prepped with the range’s accompanying shampoo and conditioner. They come in suitably sci-fi packaging, which looks very cool but I would recommend working out how they dispense before you get in the shower and you’re fumbling with wet fingers. But once I’d stopped being all clumsy and menopausal, I was away – and jolly nice they are. Plenty of lather, lovely scent and an instantly smooth feel. There’s also a luxurious treatment mask to add in, as and when your hair calls out in thirst.
Testing Tresemmé Thermo Sculpt Memory Hair Serum
The serum is designed to be applied to towel-dried hair, and to test it fairly, I didn’t use any other styling products. I just squeezed out a small amount, dispersed it through my hair and got busy blowdrying.
Lately, I’ve found it takes more graft to get my hair as sleek as I’d like, even with my AirStrait, but adding in Thermo Sculpt just made it so easy to get a smooth finish.
Next, I reached for my favourite ghd irons to add some waves. I noticed how easily they glided through my hair, how beautifully formed and glossy the curls were, and how polished they stayed when I brushed them through.
More importantly, my curls lasted shockingly well. Usually, they’ll drop and flop quite quickly, but even after a full day (and an evening with a few glasses of wine), they were still bouncy and shiny at bedtime. Even if I wasn’t.
A further surprise came when I used the Thermo Sculpt for a second day to test how well it kept my hair smooth after straightening. Being in a rush, I’d forgotten my umbrella, and (of course) it began drizzling on the way to the office. I had little hope for my sleek style’s survival as I hastily tucked as much hair as I could into my coat.
To my amazement, there was zero trace of frizz or fluffing when I unzipped myself in the office and inspected my hair in the beauty cupboard mirror. ‘It looks so good – it’s almost like glass hair!’ I was told by one colleague – high praise indeed.
I can’t over-emphasise how impressed I am by the Thermo Sculpt serum. I’ve had professional Brazilian blowdries in the past that have done far less – and certainly cost far more!
It genuinely has made my hair look younger – and behave that way, too. In a few pumps, Heat Memory has taken me back to a time when it held its shape and was shinier, smoother and all-round easier to manage. In other words, my hair now remembers what I’ve asked it to do in the first place.
Now, if only I had the same magic for my menopausal brain!
