She’s a Hollywood leading lady, a beauty icon and now Demi Moore has taken on a new role — mother of the bride. And while a polished updo might be the traditional choice for the occasion, Demi made a compelling case for long, romantic waves that feel every bit as elegant. (Mums, take note.)
The actress, 63, recently celebrated in Idaho as her youngest daughter, Tallulah, tied the knot. Early this morning, Demi shared a series of gorgeous snaps from the big day, alongside a heartfelt caption that read: ‘There are moments in life that feel almost too beautiful to be real — and watching my Tallulah become a bride, surrounded by so much love, was one of them.’
Demi’s long-time hairstylist, Dimitris Giannetos, also shared some snaps, giving us a closer look at her glam look for the big day. She wore a showstopping iridescent green Balenciaga gown, which perfectly complemented ceremony’s forest setting.
Instead of a traditional mother-of-the-bride updo, Demi wore her signature waist-length hair loose in soft, romantic waves — a look Dimitris aptly dubbed ‘forest waves’. In the caption, he explained, ‘I wanted to keep the hair ethereal. Wavy, done but undone.’
We’d say he nailed the brief — and the look has impressed fellow hairstylists, too. ‘Demi’s hair has that gorgeous soft, romantic feel,’ says bridal hair specialist and OSMO ambassador Carol Ritchie. ‘The waves are soft, and they frame her jaw and cheekbones, which is always flattering on mature women.’
It’s her decision to forgo a more traditional style that makes the look feel so modern. ‘It’s not the usual mother-of-the-bride updo you’d expect from a wedding, but nothing is ever expected with Demi,’ Carol says. ‘She has a lot of hair, and it looks really healthy, so why not show it off?’
And that healthy-looking finish is key. According to top hairstylist and salon founder Marc Trinder, it’s the condition of Demi’s hair that makes the style work so beautifully. ‘It’s all about the gloss, shine and health of her hair,’ he says.
‘I love long hair on women of all ages,’ he tells GH. ‘It’s a complete myth that once you reach your 60s you can’t wear your hair long – you can, but just make sure you focus on the condition and have regular trims to keep the shape.’
Of course, when you have long hair, styling comes into play, too. To recreate those ‘forest waves’ and, crucially, help them last throughout a long wedding day, Carol says the right prep is key.
‘You want to start with a cocktail of heat protector and a texture product,’ she says, recommending OSMO Matte Salt Spray and OSMO Thermal Defence. ‘This combination will help to keep the hair in prime condition but also give it a bit of grip and hold for the waves.’
To create the soft waves, Carol recommends investing in a wide-barrel curling tong. ‘You’ll want to take random sections and curl with alternating waves, so it doesn’t look too uniform. Once it’s cooled, take a wide-tooth comb and gently comb through with a little hair oil.’
Her final piece of advice? ‘The trick here is not to overwork it, just let the waves do their thing. Less is more with this look.’
