Jo Whiley might call herself a ‘reluctant runner’ – but there’s no doubt the broadcaster, 60, understands the power of exercise to transform her health and body shape. She’s previously spoken about her love of swimming, Pilates and hitting the gym... but confesses that running can be ‘really hard’.

And when the going gets tough, she stays motivated by remembering why she’s training in the first place. After completing the London Landmarks Half Marathon, the Radio 2 DJ shared an Instagram post in which she explained what kept her going. ‘I just wanted to prove to myself I think that I could still run,’ she says. ‘I’ve got to a certain age – I want to test myself, see what I’m capable of.’

And to get her to the end, she has one song in mind – David Guetta’s Titanium. ‘That’s the big one! As you’re going over the finish line – that’s great.’

Jo has previously revealed that she suffers from arthritis in her fingers, and ‘lots of niggles and aches’. In an interview with the Independent she said: ‘Swimming’s my go to – I love swimming, I really do. If I’m ever feeling stressed, or if everything’s getting a little bit too much, I will go to the swimming pool and just do 30 lengths or something like that, and it’s just the best thing in the world for me, keeps me fit, keeps my head clear.’

She also trains at the gym regularly, focusing on building functional strength that keeps you strong. Jo works out three times a week – and these sessions include a ‘push’ workout, (think throwing, jumping, squats, lunges and push-ups); a ‘pull’ workout (which trains all the muscles that pull, such as hip thrusts and glute bridges) and a leg session.

‘With running, I really have to make myself do it,’ she told Women’s Health. ‘But the gym,’ she smiles. ‘I love working out and doing weights.’
