It can be difficult at any age to find the time, motivation and energy to exercise, but it’s particularly tough as we get into our 50s, with additional demands on our time and flagging energy – something that Baroness Karren Brady knows all too well. At 57, the mother, grandmother, star of The Apprentice and former vice-chairman of West Ham United FC has shared that staying fit is ‘hard work’, telling the Daily Mail: ‘You have to find the time to go [to the gym], particularly as you get older.’
She revealed that she follows a ‘very set’ routine. ‘It’s mainly cardiovascular and weights, and I don’t mind the odd swim. I go three or four times a week. I never have set days, because I’ve got a full-time job, then I have to go to the House of Lords often to vote, so I fit it in where I can.’
Baroness Brady says she’s been on a ‘health kick’ since becoming a grandma in March 2024. ‘I wanted to be a fit, healthy grandma,’ she told the Mail, ‘so I started eating healthy and exercising.’ She isn't, she explained, on weightloss drugs, telling The Sun: ‘I’m not on Ozempic, but questions about women’s weight come up far more often than they should. I’d much prefer the conversation to be focused around my work.'
So how does the Apprentice star keep fit, despite her packed schedule? As well as regular gym sessions, she revealed in an interview with Fabulous magazine in January this year that cycling and walking have been crucial to her weight loss.
‘Losing weight is easier than maintaining it, but I’ve been making healthy and sensible choices, which is important as you get older. I cycle or walk everywhere, too,’ she said. She’s also praised Exion – a skin-tightening treatment, posting on Instagram: ‘I never thought I’d have the confidence to wear short sleeves again, but after a course of Exion skin tightening with radio frequency, I can!’
‘It’s all about trying to be healthy and comfortable in your skin,’ she told Fabulous magazine. ‘It’s not easy when you’re in your mid-50s, seeing yourself on a high definition 50-inch TV screen. But I am comfortable. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. I’m not on TV for my looks or my sparkling personality, but for my business brain, so I try to focus on that. But when you are on TV, it’s important that you feel presentable and half-decent.’
And it’s consistency in the gym that has paid dividends. Back in February, the TV star shared a video from her local David Lloyd Club. ‘Getting my Monday morning sweat on,’ she penned in the caption. ‘I love cycling outdoors, but with this weather I’m more than happy to keep warm and get my workout in at @davidlloydclubs. Who else has kicked off their week with a workout?’
