I can’t be alone in finding it almost impossible to fit exercise into my life. Between work, long commutes, giving teenage children constant lifts and visiting elderly parents, there is precious little time to do very much else at all. In fact, I often find myself wondering how other busy people manage. Even though I know moving more and lifting weights is essential to health – particularly from your 50s and beyond – I struggle to find regular place for it.
But then I came across ITV Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid and her very doable approach to fitness, even given the demands of a busy life and very early starts. Susanna focusses on three different steps to build exercise into her life – and best of all, they’re free.
Step 1: A walk after work
This daily activity is, she says, essential to avoid feeling sluggish after her early starts. ‘I walk for two miles every day,’ she told Woman And Home.
Step 2: A short YouTube workout
Susanna makes sure she does a 10-minute YouTube workout every day. ‘I just go on YouTube and do it in my room before I get in the shower,’ she says.
Step 3: Getting steps in
Keeping an eye on your daily step count is a very helpful way of staying on top of your fitness – and Susanna gives her count a boost thanks to the layout of the ITV offices. ‘The good thing about the new building is that it gives me 2,500 extra steps every day, because there’s a longer walk between parts of the building,’ she says.
The trick, according to Susanna, is just to keep your body moving – particularly if you struggle to motivate yourself to exercise (or, as in my case, struggle to fit it in). ‘If you’re not that way inclined, like me, you need to reduce the obstacles,’ she told Woman And Home. ‘I used to go to the gym and run a lot. I would run marathons, 10ks and Park Runs, but I don’t do that anymore, so I have to keep my body moving. I am quite disciplined about that, but it is not three gym sessions a week.’
