Whether metal or plastic, bottle caps are versatile little treasures you can repurpose in all sorts of clever ways. Because of their small size and sturdy construction, they’re handy for everything from practical household fixes to fun crafts for all.
Maybe you’ve been collecting them for ages and have a hefty pile ready to go, or perhaps our list of creative ways to use bottle caps will inspire you to hold onto yours a little longer. Whatever the case, these clever ideas will help you turn something you'd normally toss into something surprisingly useful.
Turn them into magnets
Looking for a fun way to add personality to your fridge? The small, round shape of bottle caps means they work brilliantly as fridge magnets. Use strong glue to attach a magnet to the back and you’re ready to go. You can also paint them first, or wrap them in a piece of cloth.
Mark your plants
Here’s an idea if you don’t feel like spending money on plant tags. Paint the bottle a solid colour and then attach a stick to the back with a strong adhesive. Popsicle sticks, wooden dowels, and bamboo skewers all work well. Once dry, write the name of the plant on the front with a permanent marker and plop into the soil.
DIY Some Jewellery
Jewellery maker Lou Lea of Trash Panda loves transforming old bottle caps into brooches. 'Clean them with soapy water, remove the rubber seal instead, and cut out a picture from a magazine, wrapping paper, or similar. It should be the same size as the cap,' she says. Glue your chosen pattern over the front of the cap, and glue a brooch pin on the back. You can also add glass cabochons (domed glass circles available at craft shops) to go over the top of the image to magnify the image.
Protect your floors
Furniture legs can do a number on nice floors, but bottle caps can come to the rescue. Glue a piece of felt to the front of the bottle cap (it should match the size) and then attach it to the furniture leg with the felt side facing the floor.
What to read next
This creates a protective barrier that helps prevent scratches and scuffs when furniture shifts. (Just make sure the cap sits securely and doesn't have any sharp edges that could damage your flooring.)
Create mosaic art
If you’ve got a lot of bottle caps on hand, a mosaic art piece might just be in your future. Arrange the caps into flowers, geometric patterns, or even a landscape on a wooden board or within a tray. Once you find a design you love, secure each cap with a strong adhesive. You can leave the caps as-is for an eclectic look or paint them for a more cohesive design. You can also pour resin into a tray to create a flat finish.
Make sentimental ornaments
Handmade ornaments are often the most treasured, and you can create your own sentimental treasures with bottle caps. Paint the front in a festive colour (maybe even add some glitter) and then tuck a tiny photo into the back and secure it with glue.
Add a little resin over the image to preserve it. Once dry, attach a loop of ribbon or twine to the top with a dab of strong craft glue. You can also use bottle caps to create fun holiday shapes, like snow men, wreaths, or Christmas trees. Glue the pieces together, paint your design, and add a ribbon.
