Ibiza isn’t necessarily the first place that comes to mind when you’re craving a peaceful autumn escape, but once the superclubs wind down for the season, the White Isle reveals a very different side. Empty beaches, crystal-clear waters and an excellent specialty coffee scene make a compelling case for a long weekend.
Over 48 hours, I went from rooftop sunrise yoga and pastries fresh from the oven to harvesting vegetables on a working farm. And, obviously, it would’ve been rude not to squeeze in a cocktail or two along the way. Ibiza Town was quieter than expected, and by September into early October, the island seems to take a deep breath out: the crowds have noticeably thinned out, the heat has slightly dropped and afternoons can be spent outdoors without constantly chasing the nearest inch of shade.
With return flights from around £50, it’s surprisingly easy to justify an autumn escape here. Come for the empty beaches and excellent coffee; stay for long lunches, afternoon swims and limitless siestas. This is how to spend the perfect 48 hours in Ibiza…
Where to stay:
Nativo Hotel, Santa Eulalia, from £163 per night
Tucked away in the quiet residential area of Siesta, just outside Santa Eulària on Ibiza’s east coast, Nativo makes the ideal base for exploring the island’s slower side. White-stone walls, pale woods and softly curved interiors create an immediate sense of calm, while the pools and shaded lounging areas make an afternoon spent doing very little feel like a perfectly acceptable part of the itinerary.
By day, Nativo Restaurant overlooks the pool, serving fresh Mediterranean dishes designed for lingering lunches. Order the crisp, golden croquetas alongside a chilled tinto de verano before heading upstairs to Humo, where live-fire cooking and generous sharing plates draw flavours from Latin America and the Mediterranean.
Some of the best bread I’ve ever tasted came from restaurant Humo: thick slabs grilled over charcoal and served warm with herb butter. Everything from the tender octopus to the melt-in-the-mouth steak was delicious, but it was the bread that somehow stole the show. The hotel also offers rooftop sunrise yoga followed by a fresh, seasonal breakfast (with beautifully creamy and unlimited yogurt, plus homemade granola) — exactly the sort of activity that sets you up for a good day. The hotel also offers free e-bikes to use on site, if you feel like exploring neighbouring towns and beaches.
Where to eat:
Tucked away in Ibiza’s Old Town is this brilliant bakery and café, opening from 8am and well worth getting to early so you can have your pick of the freshly baked goods. Make a beeline for the cinnamon rolls which deserve all the hype – perfectly spiced, wonderfully soft and dangerously delicious.
The cardamom rolls are another favourite, alongside ‘integral’ breads made using local flours and ingredients, or you can settle in for a proper breakfast of avocado and eggs to fuel a morning exploring the Old Town while much of the island is still sleeping. Then, when you inevitably need another caffeine fix, head to...
If high-quality specialty coffee is a big part of your holiday exploration (like me), a trip to Ronda in Ibiza Town is a must. Espresso, filter coffee and creamy balanced flat whites and lattes are on offer, best enjoyed while sitting at the pavement tables to people-watch as the town slowly wake ups. It opens at 8.30am on most weekdays and 9am at weekends, so it makes a natural second stop after the bakery. Pastry first, invigorating coffee second – there are worse ways to start a day in Ibiza.
Beachouse ended up being my favourite stop of the entire weekend — the kind of place where you arrive for a couple of hours and suddenly realise it's late afternoon. Sitting directly on Platja d'en Bossa, it's made for 'fly-and-flop' days, where the hardest decision you'll make is whether to head back into the sea or order another drink or snack.
Lunch is reason enough to visit. The tableside guacamole is made exactly how you like it, with the team adjusting the chilli until it's just right, before the enormous Formentera lobster linguine lands on the table — rich, buttery and absolutely designed for sharing. But the surprise hero was the sweet and sour grilled chicken thighs.
Sticky, smoky and perfectly charred, and the one meal from the trip where I'll be trying to work out how to recreate it in my own kitchen. One hot tip I'd suggest is ordering a beautifully crisp bottle of rosé with a fruit platter while sitting on your lounger by the sea. It'll be the best decision you make all weekend.
And if you have a bit of free time, they also offer morning yoga on the sand before breakfast overlooking the sea, which means you really could spend all day at Beachouse. They also have an onsite boutique in case you find yourself wanting to have a quick outfit change before heading into town for drinks and dinner.
As the sun begins to set, make your way into the winding streets of Dalt Vila for drinks at Room Service. Hidden behind an unassuming doorway, it's all vintage furniture, candlelight and eclectic treasures, feeling more like you've wandered into the home of a wonderfully eccentric host than one of Ibiza Town's best bars.
Cocktails are anything but boring. The Dirty Mule gives the Moscow Mule a smoky, briny twist, while the Japanophile blends gin, zingy yuzu, apricot and cherry blossom into something lighter and more fragrant.
What to do:
Take a sunrise paddle board with Paddle Ibiza
There’s nothing quite like watching the sun rise from a paddle board – particularly when the Ibiza alternative is usually seeing it at the end of a night out. Paddle Ibiza’s two-hour sunrise trip starts while it’s still dark, and after a quick lesson on dry land, you’re out on the water before most people have even contemplated getting out of bed.
With fewer boats around, the water is beautifully still, and you can peer down at the Posidonia seagrass beneath you as you paddle. Stop for a cup of tea on the water while the sky changes colour around you – a slightly surreal but very lovely way to start the day. The €50 trip includes equipment, an instructor and photographs, and beginners are very welcome. The exact launch point changes depending on the weather, so you won't know where you're heading until closer to the day, which makes it feel like even more of an adventure.
Work up an appetite at Juntos Farm
For a completely different morning, head inland to Juntos Farm, a 20-hectare regenerative farm near Santa Gertrudis. And don't wear nice sandals for this one. Its Field Days are proper ‘hands-on’ experiences, so you could find yourself planting, weeding or harvesting vegetables depending on what needs doing that week.
It's a really brilliant way to understand what “regenerative” actually means. Learn how everything from composting and crop rotation to low-till cultivation and agroforestry can help restore the soil, encourage biodiversity and reduce the amount of water needed. You might get a little muddy or dusty, but that's part of the fun.
Selected Field Days typically run from 9am until 12 pm every Tuesday and Thursday, whilst the farm tours and workshops with food made from seasonal produce are separate experiences. Programmes vary, so check what's happening before you book – and don't leave without a rummage around their incredible Farm Shop for organic vegetables, preserves, olive oils, natural wines and other Balearic goodies.
Where to shop:
Pick up seasonal produce, preserves, fermented foods, Balearic olive oils and farm-made infusions. More portable souvenirs include Ibiza wine, orange vinegar, natural teas and hand-poured candles. The shop currently opens daily from 9.30am until 4.30pm.
Mercat Nou
For an everyday rather than polished version of Ibiza, browse the fruit, vegetable, fish, cheese and bakery stalls at Mercat Nou. It works particularly well with Ronda and Dalt Vila as part of an Ibiza Town morning. Bring a reusable bag and look for local olive oil, salt, honey and picnic supplies.
