best packing cubes

Keeping your luggage tidy and organised is no mean feat, especially for the chronic over-packers among us. But the best packing cubes can make a massive difference.

They help make packing easier, compressing your clothing and keeping items separate so they're easy to find. Plus, they're a godsend if you don't want to waste time unpacking once you reach your hotel – just lift the cubes out of your case and pop them straight into the drawers.

Different designs have different standout features – some will stop your shirts from wrinkling, the best packing cubes will make more space in your case, and others will prevent spills on your favourite dress. So, we got packing and tested a range at the Good Housekeeping Institute to find the top picks.

The best packing cubes for travel in 2026

We keep our tests simple in the lab – we first try to fit 15 shirts in a medium packing cube, before assessing water resistance, how easy they are to clean, and their overall quality. You’ll find a detailed breakdown of how we test packing cubes below our reviews.

    Antler Packing Cubes

    Pros

    • Premium design
    • Ample room inside

    Cons

    • Pricey

    Score: 91/100

We’re big fans of Antler’s premium luggage here at the Good Housekeeping Institute – the brand features in our best suitcases and cabin bags roundups. So, we were interested to see how its packing cubes fared in testing, and we weren't disappointed. They’re so well-made – with sturdy zips, water-resistant fabric and a lifetime warranty to boot – that our tester declared them the best quality buy they'd seen.

The set contains four cubes, giving you plenty of capacity and versatility when packing. And mesh front panels make it easy to see what’s inside. Testers managed to fit 15 shirts into the medium cube when it was uncompressed, and 13 when they used the compression system. None of the clothes creased when it was thrown about, either.

The set isn’t the cheapest, but we think the quality design makes it well worth the extra cash.

    Pros

    • Good water resistance

    Cons

    • Only having two sizes limits versatility

    Score: 90/100

This set of two cubes is sleek yet robust. The opaque fabric means you can peek at what’s inside, and the cubes have robust seams to hold their shape. The compression zip worked well, and we were able to fit about 12 shirts inside.

It’s water repellant, too, but you’ll have to hand wash it when you want to clean it. Our testers would also have liked the option to buy a bigger size for jumpers and chunkier items. Overall, though, this set is a thoughtfully designed, quality buy.

    Score: 90/100

You can’t see inside this compression cube, but it impressed on test nonetheless. For starters, it comes with a lifetime guarantee, and 13 shirts fitted comfortably inside when compressed (it managed 15 when not). It was well made too, and testers loved the addition of an extra compartment for popping in the odd dirty item or worn underwear.

While the cubes were generally water resistant overall, there was some water absorption around the zip, so if you have a spillage in your case, it may not keep everything out. That's a small niggle though. The cubes are only available individually but they’re a premium pick.

Over packers, this set’s for you – it includes five compression cubes and a handy shoe bag, making it easier than ever to organise all your belongings. A mesh front also means you can easily see inside, even if that limits how waterproof the cubes are.

When compressed, there was room for 10 shirts, and our tester loved that the accompanying instructions detail the best way to fold everything. They pack away compactly, too.

    Cons

    Score: 84/100

Away is always a winner in the style stakes, and these packing cubes are no exception. Available in the brand's classic range of muted tones, you could match them with your suitcase or opt for a complementary colour.

The cubes aren’t compression ones, but the set of four still helps you pack neatly with room for 13 shirts in the medium cube. Our clothes didn’t crease and the mesh tops allow you to see what's inside. They would let water in, but the chances of a spillage in your suitcase are low, so that doesn't worry us too much. As with everything from Away, these are a chic pick.

    Cons

    Score: 83/100

There are a few different size options available in this set, and testers really liked that you can get four of the bigger cubes together, making them ideal if you’re packing hold luggage for a longer trip.

They aren’t the fanciest design we tried – they won’t compress your luggage, for example. But the mesh tops give you a good view inside. Given how spacious they are, it's not surprising that they aren't that compact to store. They’re also hand-wash only. But for their low price, we would expect a little compromise.

These cubes have a smart, modern look. The set of three contained one that was large enough for a jumper or two, and the medium held eight shirts when compressed. The zips are good quality, too.

    Monos Compressible Packing Cubes

    Pros

    • Lightweight with a good structural design
    • Made with high-quality and durable fabric

    Cons

    • Premium price tag
    • Biggest size was smaller than some others we’ve tried

    Score: 82/100

Yes, this set has a high price tag, but Monos’ luggage has a premium feel. These cubes are lightweight and hold their structure even when empty. The seams were strong, the fabric durable and water resistant (apart from the mesh viewing window, of course) and you can fold them flat when not in use.

We tested the set of four, and found that the biggest cube was closer to the medium sizes of other brands, so we tested that one with our packing lists. Our tester struggled to fit a jumper inside, but there was room for a respectable nine shirts when compressed. They should serve you well for many trips to come.

    trtl Packing Pods

    Pros

    • Instructions provide details on how to roll your clothes and stack them
    • Versatile

    Cons

    • Not very big and not suitable for heavy items
    • Some loose thread on the inside and outside – although this didn’t impact use

    Score: 79/100

Unlike others in this list, these are more pod-like than cube-like, offering an organised and compact way of packing for those who like to roll their clothes. They’re better suited to overnight trips or backpacking than longer holidays due to the small capacity – we could only fit up to seven shirts in the largest pod, for example. But their rounded design makes them ideal for packing backpacks and duffel bags, and the soft, flexible moulds are easy to fold up if you decide to unpack during your stay.

They would also double up well as a handy gym, shopping or toiletries bag thanks to the detachable shoulder strap and metal hanging loops.

The material proved repellent at first, but water gradually seeped through by the seams and zip, so we recommend wiping them dry quickly if they get wet. They were stain-resistant though, with a light rinse doing the trick, and they held up well in the washing machine, should you need to freshen them up.

    • Clothes didn’t crease when cube was thrown about

    Cons

    • No compression
    • Basic feel overall

    Score: 77/100

You’ll be able to divvy up your whole suitcase with this set of eight cubes, which also includes a makeup bag and drawstring bag. Note that they aren’t compression cubes and our tester found the packing straps inside didn’t make much difference to the overall use.

But the medium size had ample room for 12 shirts, so this shouldn’t impact things too much – especially if you’re organising hold luggage. And the mesh tops let you see what’s inside some of them at a quick glance. A versatile, budget-friendly set.

    Pros

    • Plastic caps on zips for extra durability
    • No stains left behind after a quick wipe

    Cons

    Score: 74/100

With a robust structure, which held its shape well during testing, our cotton shirts emerged from this packing cube ready-to-wear with minimal creasing.

The compression system shrunk the 5.5-litre cube down to 2.5-litres, yet we still managed to fit in nine shirts, making room for more clothes and belongings in the rest of the suitcase.

    Cons

    Score: 74/100

This lightweight set is ideal for backpackers or campers who need to keep their luggage light, but organised. The material can be completely scrunched up, which is handy for storing; however, this does mean the cubes aren’t great for stacking inside a suitcase. Despite this, we managed to fit eight shirts inside and they emerged still wearable (except for one small crumple).

Any stains wiped off with ease and testers appreciated the string puller on the zip, which makes opening and closing that little bit simpler. For keeping dirty laundry separate on your travels, this is a good value set.

Dunelm Set of 7 Travel Storage Packing Cubes

    Pros

    • Excellent value
    • Main material is water repellent

    Cons

    • Zips are somewhat stiff and flimsy-feeling
    • No packing advice provided

    Score: 71/100

This super-affordable Dunelm set comes with a total of seven bag options: three packing cubes, two flat zip-up pouches (one has a plastic lining – great for toiletries), a zipped shoe bag and a drawstring bag for dirty clothes (or another pair of shoes). The two largest packing cubes have mesh panels so it’s easy to see inside at a glance, and although this compromises their water resistance, the main fabric repels water really well.

Beyond that, these packing cubes are quite basic – there’s no compression system (so we could only squeeze eight shirts inside a medium cube) and they feel a little flimsy overall, which is perhaps not surprising for the price. The zips were a little stiff, too, and sometimes got caught on the material. Overall though, this set has a good range of pouches for separating different items, making it a great value buy for organising a jumbled suitcase.

    How we test packing cubes

Our rigorous packing cube tests are designed to simulate how you’d use them in real life travelling situations. Here’s everything we consider.

    • Capacity: We select the packing cube that’s as close as possible to a target size, then measure how many identical folded shirts can fit inside. We test the cube’s capacity in its standard shape, filled to its maximum practical capacity and (where applicable) compressed. This helps us compare how much each cube can realistically hold.
    • Compression: For cubes with compression zips, we measure the dimensions before and after compression to see how much space they can actually save.
    • Crease prevention: We pack a freshly ironed cotton shirt inside each cube and simulate the bumps of travelling by dropping, dragging and carrying a packed suitcase over stairs. We also test the cube on its own by shaking and dropping it, before checking how creased the shirt is.
    • Water resistance: We fill each cube with clothing protected by tissue paper, pour water over the outside, and see if moisture is repelled or seeps through.
    • Stain resistance: We apply common stains to the packing cubes, including tomato soup, lipstick and foundation, then see how easily they can be removed.
    • Washability: If the packing cube is machine washable, we wash it according to the manufacturer’s instructions before checking for any colour fading, shrinkage, change in shape or any damage to the fabric or zips.

    How to use packing cubes

Packing cubes work best when you organise your luggage by category, keeping tops, bottoms and underwear in separate cubes so everything is easy to find. Roll lightweight clothing such as T-shirts and dresses to save space and reduce creases. Bulkier items like jumpers and jeans should be folded to the size of the cube. If you’re using compression cubes, leave a little room at the top before zipping them closed.

When packing your suitcase, place the largest and heaviest cubes at the bottom, then stack smaller ones on top. Fill any awkward gaps with rolled-up clothing, shoes or smaller pouches to maximise every inch of space.

Some sets come with shoe bags or extra pouches, which lend themselves well to toiletries or electronics. And when you’re not travelling, there are many uses for them around the house, too – wardrobe shelves, we’re looking at you.

Compression cubes vs regular: do compression cubes actually save space?

Yes, compression cubes save space by squashing clothes tightly together with a second zip. This squeezes out the air between items of clothing so you can fit more in your suitcase. They’re particularly useful for packing bulky items such as jumpers or jackets and are easier to use (and cause less wrinkles) than a vacuum bag.

    Are packing cubes effective?

If you’re the kind of person who likes to live out of your suitcase rather than unpack into a wardrobe on holiday, then packing cubes are a smart choice. You can put underwear in one, T-shirts in another and so on so you can quickly reach in and grab what you want. See-through designs are particularly helpful for this.

Chronic over-packers will benefit from compression packing cubes, which remove the air from your piles of clothes and let you cram more in.

Rolling clothes works in a similar way to compression cubes as it squeezes some of the air out of gaps, removing some of the bulk and helping you fit more in. This method also helps reduce wrinkles and creases, which can be a godsend when on the move.

However, packing cubes will add that extra level of organisation in your case and stop things moving around on the journey.

How many cubes do I need and in what sizes?

This depends on how many people you’re packing for, how long you’re going away for and what sort of climate you’re packing for. But as a guide:

    • For a short break (2-3 nights): For one person going on a short trip, we recommend one small cube for socks and underwear, one medium-to-large cube for tops and bottoms, plus another medium cube if you need extra layers like jumpers.
    • For a week-long trip: For a longer stay of a week or more, one small cube, one or two medium cubes (depending on weather) and one large one should be plenty.
    • For a longer stay or family holiday: For a longer trip without laundry facilities or for families of three or four, a set of six cubes should be enough to keep everyone’s belongings separate and compact.

Having a range of sizes helps differentiate between cubes and keep things organised. As well as packing cubes for clothing, extras like shoe bags are useful for keeping belongings separated.

Do packing cubes work with a backpack or just suitcases?

You absolutely can use a packing cube or two to make the most of the space in your backpack and keep your belongings organised. Most packing cubes will comfortably fit inside a good-sized travel backpack – just check the measurements before you buy.

Will packing cubes help me fit everything in a carry-on?

They will certainly help – packing cubes are a great way to help fit more into your carry-on bag. If you’re looking to maximise space, opt for compression cubes, which squeeze the air out from between items of clothing, helping you fit more in. But even packing cubes without compression zips can help you pack more efficiently.

To help you make the most of all the nooks and crannies in the corners and edges of your carry-on bag, it’s also worth keeping some items out of your packing cubes so they can fill in all the gaps.

Are cheap Amazon packing cubes just as good as expensive branded ones?

In our tests, the Amazon Basics Packing Cubes with Mesh Top Panel (score: 83/100) and Eono Compression Packing Cubes (score: 85/100) proved to be great-value options, delivering excellent performance for the price.

However, premium designs such as the Antler Packing Cubes (score: 91/100) and Peak Design Packing Cube (score: 90/100) stood out for their sturdier construction, smoother zips and more effective compression. For frequent travellers, they’re a worthy step up.

Rolling clothes vs using cubes: what works better?

You’ll get the best results by combining these methods. Rolling clothes helps reduce the chance of wrinkles and makes better use of awkward gaps in your suitcase, while packing cubes keep everything organised and stops items shifting around during travel.

For maximum space, pack your cubes first, then use rolled-up items such as T-shirts or socks to fill the gaps between them. If you’re using compression packing cubes, rolling your clothes before packing them can help you squeeze in even more.

    best packing cubes

The verdict: What are the best packing cubes to buy?

Whether you’re going on a weekend getaway or a long-haul adventure, packing cubes are a must-have for tidy luggage and making the most of your suitcase space. Our experts loved the Antler Packing Cubes set for its high-quality compression design.

If you’re on more of a budget, the Bettlemory Packing Cubes is a great value option. They don’t have a compression system though, so opt for the Eono Compression Packing Cubes for making extra space without spending more than you need to.
