STOP! Get those fingers away from your face and pick up on of the best makeup brushes to apply your foundation instead.

Not only do they make things more hygienic (if you wash them regularly) but they’ll also help you achieve a flawless, filtered look.

An artist shouldn’t blame their tools, but when your face is the canvas, every wayward stroke stands out, so your choice of makeup brush is key.

It may sound trivial, but the right brush can make achieving your desired look a whole lot easier. Some will even help to make your makeup last longer. There are many different types of brush to choose from, which is why we’ve created a complete guide below. We’ve also included both individual brushes and brush sets on our list, to cover all bases, from beginner to pro, and all budgets. Here they are in a quick list but keep scrolling for the full reviews.

As well as asking our beauty experts and editors to share the brushes they use and love, we also spoke to Val Garland, a makeup artist who’s worked with the likes of Helen Mirren and Kate Moss, about the importance of a good brush, and which ones you actually need, before curating our list. You’ll also find Val’s buying tips in our guide below.

These are the brushes we always reach for.

When she’s regularly painting the faces of the rich and famous, you’d expect Val Garland’s makeup bag to be brimming with expensive, luxury brushes.

But this affordable set from EcoTools is one she says she reaches for time and time again. The brushes’ dual end makes them quick and easy to blend and work with, and Garland says they’re perfect for quick touch-ups.

For foundation, Val likes to use a flat, padded brush that replicates the shape of the finger. This one from Morphe is designed exactly like that – the slanted tip reaches all the nooks and crannies of your face for an even distribution of product. It’s best for using with cream or liquid foundation. Simply pop a couple of pumps on the back of your hand, dab the brush gently on it, and then blend into the face.

The larger, less dense surface area makes it easier and quicker to apply foundation as a base layer for the entire face, before going in with more precise options for concealer etc.

Consider this one a miniature version of the above, as it's designed with the same slanted tip, but is smaller in size and denser (for more precise and targeted blending of concealer).

This makes sense for the smaller under-eye area, where concealer is often applied to brighten dark circles or onto targeted blemishes (always remember to wash the brush after doing this).

Best contour brush

Contouring is a great way to accentuate the natural curvature of your face. This dual-sided brush is a useful tool to help achieve the most striking results, without any streaking or lines.

Use the denser ‘Define’ end to pack on darker contouring pigment on areas such as the cheekbones, underjaw and nose bridge. Once you’ve packed on the colour, flip the brush to the ‘Blend’ end to do just that.

Real Techniques Powder Brush

Imagine clouds of powder being gently beaten into a compact, and you’ll have a good idea of what it’s like to use this light-touch brush. Soft and fluffy, it’s less dense than a foundation brush, which helps to evenly distribute the fine powder particles for a flawless finish. Focus on the oilier T-zone with this one.

A rounded, smaller brush is ideal for the apples of your cheeks. Yes, there’s no such thing as too much blush, but you do want it to sit on your cheeks rather than across your whole face.

This brush’s smaller surface area and slanted edge help achieve just that, without dispensing it everywhere. It has that same looser density as the powder brush and can also be used for bronzer.

When it comes to using cream bronzer or liquid foundation, you’re going to want a denser brush, so the liquid doesn’t fall between the cracks. This one is perfect for laying down colour and seamlessly blending along cheekbones – you don't want racing stripes of bronzer down your cheeks, after all.

This five-piece Morphe set is the perfect initial investment into upgrading your makeup game. It contains everything you need for applying your base makeup: a foundation brush, powder brush, a blush/bronzer brush and a concealerbrush.

The GHI’s lifestyle writer has the complete master set, which comes with all these brushes. “Until I tried this set, I used one brush for everything. Now I can’t imagine how I managed without them for that long. They’ve completely transformed how my makeup sits and even extended the wear of my base products throughout the day,” she says.

What makeup brushes do I actually need?

When there’s a brush for every part of your face, it’s hard to know which ones you actually need. Reassuringly, Valsays: “For personal use, a focused collection of six to eight brushes is more than sufficient. It’s less about quantity and more about choosing versatile, well-performing shapes.”

“A foundation brush is a key starting point. I tend to favour brushes shaped like a fingertip or finger pad, as they replicate the soft-focus blend you’d achieve with your fingers but with greater precision and control,” she adds. Above, we’ve included the Morphe Angled Cream and Liquid Foundation brush, which is does exactly this.

“Next, a good powder brush is essential,” says Val. “A soft, domed shape works beautifully, distributing product evenly while doubling up easily for use with blush or bronzer. A double-ended brush can be incredibly practical. A tapered dome is ideal for targeted powder placement, under the eyes or through the T-zone, while a fuller head handles all-over application effortlessly.” We’ve included the fluffy Real Technique Powder Blush to meet all those needs.

“For the eyes, simplicity wins: you want a flat brush to place colour and a fluffy blending brush to diffuse and soften,” says Val. And finally, I recommend a precise liner brush. I prefer having two variations, an angled brush for structure and a finer, elongated brush for detail.” The Charlotte Tilbury Essential Eye Tools set contains all three of these brushes.

“Keeping your brush kit streamlined can actually improve technique and make regular cleaning more manageable,” Val adds.

How do you apply foundation with a brush?

“I always begin by popping foundation onto the back of my hand rather than applying directly from the bottle to the brush,” says Val. “This allows better control over the amount of product and helps distribute it more evenly through the brush.

“From there, apply using controlled strokes or gentle buffing and tapping motions, depending on the desired coverage. This is where the finger pad style of brush mimicking your fingers makes things easy, works every time and couldn’t be simpler.”

Do good quality makeup brushes make a difference?

“Yes, noticeably,” says Val. “Well-made brushes maintain their shape, apply product more evenly, and offer far greater control. They also tend to last significantly longer when properly cared for.

“That said, quality isn’t defined by price alone. The best brushes are the ones that perform consistently and feel intuitive in your hand.”

How do you clean your makeup brushes and how often??

“Brushes should be cleaned regularly, ideally after every use, especially those used with liquid or cream products, and anything used around the eyes,” says Val. “A mild dish soap works extremely well at breaking down oils and product buildup. Massage the bristles gently, rinse thoroughly, reshape and lay flat to dry.

“Clean brushes not only support healthier skin but also deliver better makeup results. So, I suggest washing after each use to avoid any issues.”

What brand of makeup brushes are the best?

“There’s no single answer, it depends on personal preference, technique, and budget,” says Val. “Some consistently strong options I use include:

  • Hourglass Brushes: ‘They are beautifully designed with excellent face and complexion brushes and have that pad-like shape I mentioned earlier.”
  • SUQQU Brushes: “They’re a luxury choice but are exceptionally soft and the brand’s powder and blending brushes are incredible."
  • EcoTools Brushes: “These came as a surprise to me, but after an emergency Boots purchase when I’d left my make up bag at home, they performed incredibly! I bought the Duo set.” Double ended brushes are perfect for me, and I now use them every day alongside my other favourites. They’re reliable, accessible, and particularly strong for practical, everyday use. Ultimately, performance matters more than label. Many artists mix brands and include unexpected favourites that simply work.”
