best gym leggings

The best gym leggings are a true wardrobe staple, whether you’re perfecting your pigeon pose, hitting the gym for a strength session, or just popping to the shops.

But with so many pairs to choose from, how do you know you’re getting genuine value for money? And which will fulfil all your fitness (and lounging) needs? They need to actually feel comfortable (without having to be pulled up every five seconds) and come with those all-essential pockets, as well as being squat-proof and sweat-wicking.

Thankfully, the Good Housekeeping Institute is here to help you find your perfect match.

The best gym leggings to shop in 2026

These are our winners at a glance with options for every budget and exercise preference:

What to look for in gym leggings

With so many different designs and brands available on the market, it can be hard to know what to look for in the best gym leggings. We've summarised some of the key features worth investing in below.

  • Fabric: If you've got a intense HIIT session on the cards, you'll want to opt for leggings with effective sweat wicking material to keep things fresh and flowing. If you're planning on lounging around in them, you may want something softer and less compressed for completely unrestricted movement. Either way, you want them to be comfortable, and to an extent, stylish. Look good, feel good, and all!
  • Size: We asked our testers to note whether the leggings they tried remained true to size or veered onto the smaller or large sides in their feedback, and have noted any problem areas below. Some brands also offer varying lengths to suit different heights too.
  • Pockets: Again, this will largely depend on the type of workout you're going for. If you're a runner, and plan on just taking your phone and keys, side storage pockets are a good idea to free your hands from carrying them. Some also have small waistband pockets for energy gels or bars.

How we test gym leggings

We've tested 79 pairs of leggings to find the best for both high- and low-impact workouts. We recruited a panel of testers – made up of fitness enthusiasts of all abilities and experts – to wear the leggings for at least three different workouts before sharing their detailed verdict on design, fit, comfort and overall performance.

They considered all the most important factors, including how easy the leggings were to get on and off, how well the material moved with their body and how comfortable they were to wear during sweaty workouts.

Up to eight people tested each pair of leggings. They tailored their workouts to the product's claims, wearing sweat-wicking leggings for high-impact exercise and yoga leggings for gentler sessions.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, our experts carried out wash tests to see if the leggings remained the same in terms of colour, fit and size after multiple machine washes. We used a digital imaging system to compare any changes. We also used an Omni stretch machine to evaluate the translucency of fabrics when they were at full stretch.

These are our winning pairs.

Lululemon Wunder Train High Rise Leggings

Pros

  • Velvety soft fabric
  • No shrinkage during washing

Cons

  • Small pocket

Score: 93/100

From HIIT to hot yoga, these luxe Lululemon leggings will make a super comfortable exercise companion. They were a big hit with our panellists, who couldn’t get enough of the buttery-soft fabric and loved the drawcord around the waist to help you achieve the perfect fit. “They felt so smooth against my skin, it barely felt like I was wearing anything,” said one tester.

The high-waisted design was extremely flattering and hit just the right level of compression. In fact, many of our panel said they felt more confident when they had these leggings on.

Comfort and good looks aside, they put in a solid performance during even the toughest of workouts. They proved brilliantly squat-proof and scored full marks in our sweat-wicking lab tests. What’s more, they washed well, dried in an instant and there were no signs of shrinkage after numerous goes in the washing machine.

A few panellists found the hidden pocket in the waistband too small but that’s a minor niggle for an otherwise exceptional pair of leggings.

Vuori Daily Legging

Pros

  • Good range of movement
  • Comfortable for long wear

Cons

  • No pockets

Score: 93/100

It’s safe to say that our testers loved these ultra-soft leggings from Vuori. They scored highly for comfort and flattering fit, which remained true to size even after washing. These also come in short, medium and long, catering to different heights.

“They stay in place during activities, and the waistband doesn’t fall down like other leggings,” said one tester. This is down to the drawstring tie, which keeps them firmly in place. The only real gripe mentioned was the lack of pockets, which would have been ideal for runs or workouts where you only want to bring your phone and keys.

Otherwise, they’re a comfortable, flattering and secure pair of leggings – and you don’t have to worry about sweat marks, thanks to the moisture-wicking fabric.

  • Extremely soft feel

Cons

  • On the warm side, so more suited to low-impact exercise

Score: 93/100

Offering the perfect combination of style and comfort, these leggings will become a mainstay in your workout wardrobe. Easily the softest pair of leggings on test, our seriously impressed panellists couldn’t get enough of their weightless material, with many recommending them to friends and family. “They’re so soft and comfortable, I’d wear them to bed!” raved one enthusiastic tester.

Despite their loungewear credentials, these leggings stayed in place during exercise and there was no gaping or bunching. Better still, our testers found the high-waisted fit flattering on all body types. Though too cosy for avid CrossFitters, they'd be ideal for Pilates, barre, yoga, walking or just everyday wear.

Another Lululemon pair in our winners list, but are you really surprised? Our testers liked the seamless design of these yoga leggings, with one saying it was the comfiest pair of they’d ever worn! Everyone loved their soft, premium feel, too.

Available in a wide range of colours, testers said the lighter shades showed sweat more, but overall they’re a high-quality pair that will see you through plenty of sun salutations.

Cons

Score: 86/100

“I’m practically living in them at this point,” is what one tester had to say about these leggings, and we wouldn’t blame them, with others calling out the ultra-soft material, which doesn’t dig in at the waist. They’re also lightweight and breathable, and the fabric has four-way stretch, so they’re squat-safe too.

They don’t offer as high a level of compression as some other leggings though, which may not suit everyone. However, they make a great pair of leggings for gentle exercise or lounging about in. They’re available in a flattering plain black, as well as a light grey and eye-catching lilac.

Gymshark Vital Seamless Leggings

Pros

  • Extremely stretchy despite looking tiny initially
  • Breathable, even in hot yoga sessions

Cons

  • Some wished there was a seam on the bum for a more flattering fit

Score: 86/100

Gymshark’s popular Vital Seamless Leggings claim to keep you cool and comfy throughout your training with the help of moisture-wicking technology and breathable mesh dots, and they didn’t let us down. They scored full marks for sweat wicking in our lab tests, and our panellists said they kept them dry and comfy, without any unwanted sweat patches.

Testers liked the thick, compressive fabric; it doesn’t budge and holds you in in all the right places while still feeling soft and comfortable. They also rated the muscle contouring lines along the legs and bottom, which created a flattering silhouette.

With no pockets, our panel missed having somewhere to store their valuables during workouts; however, this wouldn’t put them off wearing them time and time again. “I’d definitely recommend them. I want to buy them in more colours now!” said one satisfied tester.

Pros

  • Squatproof

Cons

  • Restrictive

Score: 86/100

Sustainable activewear brand Girlfriend Collective uses up to 25 recycled water bottles in every pair of leggings, making these a more eco-choice. Our testers said they fitted well, with no gaping or bunching, while the two discreet pockets proved handy, too.

Although the fabric wasn’t super stretchy, it allowed for full range of movement, including squats, but the waistband wasn’t as secure as others on this list. We found the sizing comes up small too, so go up a size if you’re unsure.

Pros

  • Quality feel for a low price
  • Extremely stretchy

Cons

  • Long, so didn’t suit petites

Score: 85/100

Been lusting after a pair of gym flares? Call of the search, we’ve found your perfect match. These budget-friendly beauties are made from supremely soft, weightless fabric and allow total freedom of movement, whether you’re pulsing it out in reformer Pilates or performing squats in the gym.

Our testers raved about the high waistband, which stayed put and didn’t need constant rearranging during their workouts, and loved that the material remained cool and breathable throughout. The leggings performed well for vigorous yoga classes, strength training and even light running. Plus the simple, stylish design means you could easily dress them up and wear them to lunch or the office.

They were too long for the shorter testers among our panel, and everyone would have appreciated side pockets for practicality, but those were our only niggles. For under £25, they offer excellent value for money.

Adanola Ultimate Wrap Over Leggings

Pros

  • Stretchy, soft fabric
  • Flattering crossover design at the waist

Cons

  • Sizing comes up slightly small

Score: 85/100

Activewear doesn’t get much more fashionable than Adanola, so if you’re looking to splash out on a stylish new pair of leggings, these more than deliver. Testers praised the flattering wrap waist design and appreciated the seam-free panel at the front, which prevents unwanted camel toe.

According to our panel, the ultra-soft, stretchy material is so comfortable, you won’t want to take the leggings off. The best part? You don’t have to – they look good enough to wear all day long, whether you’re at the gym, running errands or having brunch with the girls.

While they don’t claim to wick away moisture, we found they did a decent job of keeping our testers cool, calm and collected as they worked up a sweat. Still, we’d save them for more gentle workouts such as yoga, Pilates, stretching and hiking. Note that they come up small, so size up to ensure maximum comfort.

Spanx Active Booty Boost Leggings

Pros

  • Stitching helps sculpt the waist and bum
  • Testers didn’t need to continuously pull them up

Cons

  • Some experienced ripped seams

Score: 85/100

Spanx is renowned for its compressive, sculpting shapewear and its Booty Boost leggings don’t disappoint. They were a firm favourite among our testers, with one describing them as “honestly the best pair of leggings I’ve ever had”. One of the more stylish pairs on our list, they’re chic enough to wear outside the gym, too.

According to our panel, they’re incredibly flattering and you’ll feel constantly supported when wearing them thanks to the compressive, form-fitting material. What’s more, they proved easy to slip on and off and never needed hoicking up mid-workout.

They’re great for all kinds of vigorous workouts as they passed our squat test and scored nearly full marks for sweat wicking in the lab. The only activity we wouldn’t recommend them for is cycling – we found them a little too restrictive to allow comfortable movement on the bike.

Nike One Women's Mid-Rise Crop Leggings

Pros

  • Comfortable compression
  • Good for everyday wear as well as gym sessions

Cons

  • Waistband felt a little tight on some

Score: 85/100

Everyone needs a trusty pair of cropped leggings in their activewear arsenal and this classic style from Nike is a strong contender. Made with ‘Dri-Fit’ technology, they’re designed to wick away sweat. Sure enough, they kept our testers pleasantly dry and scored 4/5 in our sweat-wicking lab test.

The stretchy, breathable material and simple yet flattering design were a big hit with our testers, with one saying, “they were the perfect fit” and “I looked forward to wearing them.” The waistband stays in place and they’re squat proof, making them a great all-round choice for everything from yoga through to strength training and cardio.

Oh, and did we mention that at least 50% of the fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles? So they get a thumbs up for their sustainability credentials, too.

Spanx OnForm Full-length Leggings

Pros

  • Scored full marks in the stretch test, so not see-through
  • Buttery soft fabric

Cons

  • Slightly restrictive on the first wear, but this improved over time

Score: 80/100

The second Spanx entry in our list, the brand has brought its sculpting tech and comfortable feel to its gym wear. The idea of wearing Spanx leggings did make some of our testers apprehensive, as they thought they’d be extremely tight and restrictive, but, as one told us, “I couldn't have been more wrong.” They didn’t dig in around the waistband; instead, they held our panellists in.

The stretchy material caters to a range of body types – one tall tester loved how well they fitted without riding up. One of our shorter testers with skinny ankles said they didn’t experience any gaping, which “rarely happens.” With no centre seams the dreaded camel toe is avoided too.

They maintained their quality through multiple washes and a “ridiculous” amount of wear in the case of one tester, so consider them a long-term investment.

Pros

Cons

Score: 80/100

The best gym leggings can be pricey, but this wallet-friendly pair from M&S proves you don't have to pay over the odds for performance.

Not only did they score top marks in our sweat-wicking tests, but our panel also raved about the lightweight, breathable fabric for heavier gym sessions and running. They appreciated the secure back pocket for storing valuables and the internal drawstring at the waistband for adjusting the fit.

These leggings earned a thumbs-up for support, compression and sizing; both our petite and tall testers liked the length. Some testers found them a touch tight around the hips and ankles, but these great value leggings should be firmly on your radar.

CRZ Yoga’s products are designed to be affordable while rivalling the designs of other leading yoga brands. Our testers described these leggings as velvety soft and luxurious, while one telling us they kept them cool throughout a hot yoga practice.

The compression style and flex of the silky material also allowed for a range of movement. Those of a shorter stature may struggle with the length, while the waistband moved around for some. However, these are a great option for yoga or Pilates classes.

Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test thousands of products a year, including a wide range of health and wellness buys. As well as leggings, we’ve tested everything from the best walking boots to the best blood pressure monitors.

We combine lab tests and panel feedback to find the best gym leggings, so we can assess each design effectively and see how they perform across a range of workouts.

Kim Hawley is the senior sleep and wellness tester for the Good Housekeeping Institute, where she oversees all our apparel reviews, including sports leggings. She has over 30 years' experience in the fitness industry, with a level 4 personal training qualification and over two decades spent working in leading health clubs across the UK.

She is currently undertaking her level 2 personal training qualification and is an avid gym-goer, so knows what to look for in a pair of leggings. For this test, we also sent each pair of leggings with sweat-wicking claims to a specialist lab to see how they performed.

The verdict on the best gym leggings

This is an image

The Lululemon Wunder Train Leggings are an excellent all-rounder, whether you're into running, Pilates or gym classes, while the brand's Align HR Pant is perfect for yoga sessions and low-intensity workouts.

Vuori was another top-performer in our testing and its Clean Elevation Legging scored highly for both comfort and fit, thanks to the high-waisted design.

On a tight budget? For under £30, the M&S Go Move Leggings and the Amazon Essentials Women’s Active FormFlex Bootcut Pants are our top picks if you want quality without breaking the bank.

This is an image

What underwear should I wear with gym leggings?

Due to the tight nature of leggings, the threat of the dreaded VPL looms large. If you want to avoid one, opt for a seamless knicker – or a thong, if you’re feeling brave. However, you could just wear a longer T-shirt or not worry about it – people wear pants!

There’s no denying that things can get sweaty down there too, so you may want to opt for sweat-wicking knickers, such as these dedicated sweat-proof leggings from Modibodi. They also help with the odd ‘oops’ moment after your personal trainer demands five extra jumps.

Which gym leggings are the most flattering?

How good you look depends on how good you feel, so it’s all about comfort. To avoid tugging them up, you may want to opt for high-waisted leggings, which can also give a more supported, cinched-in look.

Fabric also plays a part here – many brands offer high compression levels, which many of our testers find flattering but can be too restrictive for some.

There’s also a whole range of styles to choose from – from flared leggings to cropped designs – to suit a range of preferences and body shapes.

What are the best high-waist leggings for gym workouts?

Vuori’s Daily Leggings scored highest in our testing, with an impressive 93/100. Panellists said the high-waisted leggings were not just comfortable, but flattering too, while the drawstring tie helped keep them in place during workouts.

Can you tumble dry gym leggings?

You should avoid putting gym leggings in the tumble dryer, as the high heat can damage the elasticity in the leggings, making them saggy over time. Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions for the best results.
