best electric diffusers

If filling your living space with beautiful, spa-worthy scents brings you an inordinate amount of joy, but you’re getting through your scented candle collection at an alarming rate, may we suggest investing in one of our best electric diffusers.

These clever gadgets pump out a continuous mist of essential oils, filling your home with soothing, restorative or invigorating fragrances, while adding moisture to the air.

Our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute trialled a wide range of diffusers from leading brands including The White Company and Neom, to help you upgrade your relaxation game and achieve a spa-like zen at home.

Here are our winners at a glance, with our -depth reviews and buying guide below.

How we test diffusers

best electric diffusers

To find the best electric diffusers on the market, our Good Housekeeping Institute panel tested a range of devices from leading brands. Each one was sent to at least five people who used them regularly over a three-week period before reporting back – in detail – on their experience.

We ask panellists to judge the diffusers on a range of factors that matter when you're shopping, including the practicality of their design, how easy they are to set up and use, their scent throw (will it fragrance your whole living space or just an office), their mood-boosting qualities – here, we assess any mood lighting, misting options, or accompanying essential oils – and how easy they are to maintain and keep clean because no one wants their spa moment to be a faff.

Back in the lab, our experts measure energy efficiency and look into any sustainability claims. We then bring all the feedback and data together to give each device a final score. Only the top performing products made our final line-up.

Score: 94/100

As one of the leading lifestyle and homeware brands on the high street, The White Company’s products come with high expectations. Fortunately, its electronic diffuser didn’t disappoint. It was an instant hit with our panel, who praised the design – they thought the ceramic and light wood finish was elegant and said it slotted in perfectly with their interiors.

This diffuser also scored highly for ease of use. You simply take off the ceramic shell, fill the water tank to the clearly marked max line, add your scent of choice, and you’re good to go. There’s a range of timer settings to give you flexibility and the device itself is very quiet, so it won’t disturb you whether you’re working or relaxing in bed.

Our testers found the scent throw impressive, with many saying it filled up their rooms in mere moments. “It creates a gorgeous aroma,” said one, with another telling us: “I found it really calming; it’s helping me sleep.”

Pros

  • Dimmable night light ideal for winding down
  • Breathing mode
  • Aesthetically pleasing design
  • Impressive scent throw

Cons

  • Expensive

Score: 94/100

This stylish Neom device is all about supporting your wellbeing. As well as four automatic timer settings and a dimmable night light to create a cosy ambience, it boasts a breathing mode, which slowly brightens for seven seconds as you inhale then dims for 11 as you exhale – a useful tool to help you de-stress before dozing off.

Our testers were impressed by how quickly their chosen scent filled a room and rated its staying power. It was simple to set up and clean and its sleek design earned extra brownie points.

Offering both style and functionality in spades, this luxe diffuser is a self-care dream. “The incredible aromas made me feel like I was in a high-end spa,” said one satisfied tester. Thanks to the sophisticated packaging and array of starter packs on offer, it would make a gorgeous gift, too. The touch controls were a little hit and miss, but that was our only niggle.

Pros

  • Value for money
  • Infuses large rooms quickly
  • Six calming light modes
  • Attractive ceramic design
  • Quiet motor

Cons

  • Max line difficult to read

Score: 93/100

If you’re tempted by our Neom or White Company winners but can’t justify the spend, this ceramic design from Oliver Bonas looks just as chic and comes with a range of timer settings and light options. Our testers liked how quickly it infused even larger spaces with heavenly scents and enjoyed flitting between the six colourful light modes depending on their mood.

Unlike some diffusers which vibrate loudly when pumping out oil, the motor was ultra quiet and didn’t get in the way of their relaxation. As well as its stellar performance, the ridged ceramic shell adds a stylish touch to any mantlepiece. Choose from three colours: grey, sage or natural. “It’s a beautiful addition to my home,” gushed one tester, while another said they’d recommend it to all their friends and family.

Pros

  • Compact
  • Easy to use with different options to suit everyone
  • Impressive scent throw

Cons

  • Slightly noisy

Score: 91/100

This battery-operated design is compact and portable, so you can move it around the house easily, take it outdoors and even go on holiday with it! There are no ugly, trailing wires ruining your decor and there's no need to fill it up with water. “I absolutely loved this product,” commented one panel member, while another said: “It looks good, it’s easy to use and works beautifully.”

Testers loved the “classy design”, saying it looked right at home in their living spaces. It’s also really simple to use thanks to the handy instructions and funnel to help with pouring the oil. There are three timer settings to choose from along with the option to switch between high and low mist levels.

The scent throw was spot on (it wasn’t too overpowering or too subtle) but keep in mind that the diffuser is a little noisy. Still, everyone said they would continue using it and happily recommend it to others.

Pros

  • Portable
  • Can be controlled from your phone

Cons

  • Bulkier than other models

Score: 91/100

There’s no need to add water to this premium electric diffuser - instead, it uses pressurised air to disperse scent. Our expert found the setup straightforward - simply attach the diffusion head to the chosen essential oil before inserting it into the diffuser – and it scored highly for performance. It produces a fine mist, which is consistent without being overwhelming.

It’s also quiet in use and you can choose the diffusion times (Boost mode intensifies the fragrance). Testers praised its portability – the cordless design allowed them to move it from room to room. It also features dual diffusion, so you can switch between oils easily. You do this via the app, which proved popular in testing, as you can also schedule sessions and change light settings from your phone.

Many of our panellists liked its straightforward, elegant look, but it’s bulkier than other designs. It’s also a pricier pick, but if you’re looking for a portable diffuser with good scent throw that you don’t have to add water to and can control from your phone, this could be a good investment.

White Company Portable Rechargeable Electronic Diffuser

Pros

  • Portable design
  • Easy to fill
  • Attractive minimalist look

Cons

  • Mist struggled to fill larger rooms

Score: 91/100

This White Company diffuser not only has a small footprint, but its minimalist design will also look chic on your mantelpiece or bedside table. Our panel of testers found it aesthetically pleasing, with one praising the “sleek, smart, compact design”.

Our expert loved how portable it was, too. It’s powered by a rechargeable battery and is lightweight, so you can easily move it from room to room. They also found it easy to fill and use, thanks to its simple, intuitive controls.

The water-based diffuser delivered consistent mist coverage in small spaces, but due to its compact size, the scent struggled to fill larger rooms. At just over £50, it could be expensive for some, but its smart features, including timer-controlled fragrance release and automatic shut-off when the water runs out, make the diffuser good value for money.

Pros

  • Offers both fragrance mist and light options
  • Turns off automatically for safety

Cons

  • Can be tricky to get the cover off

Score: 88/100

We’re huge fans of Tisserand’s essential oils, fragrances and pillow mists, so it’s hardly surprising we loved the brand’s diffuser, too. It comes in at under £45, yet it’s still brimming with impressive features.

The petite, elegant design – which proved popular with testers – mists essential oils around the room in 30-second bursts or continuously, depending on your preference. It also offers a range of soothing light settings to help lull you into a state of relaxation. “I like using it as a lamp in the evenings,” said one panel member, while another commented: “The light has smooth transitions between colours, which was nice when unwinding in the evenings.”

It was a doddle to set up and intuitive to use, with no fiddly settings or awkward buttons, and we liked that it automatically shuts down when it’s out of water. We found the lid was a little stiff, but that’s hardly a dealbreaker. Overall, excellent value for money.

Muji Aroma Diffuser

Pros

  • Clear set-up instructions
  • Discreet pillar candle design
  • Two light modes for pre-bedtime relaxation

Cons

  • Slightly louder than other devices tested

Score: 88/100

Our testers loved the design of this tall, slim Muji model, which looks more like a pillar candle than an electronic device. It offers four automatic timer settings between 30 minutes and three hours and two light modes for setting the mood, whether you’re bedding down for the night, entertaining or working away at your desk.

Panellists found it a cinch to operate from the get-go thanks to the clear instructions and said it delivered the perfect amount of scent in seconds every time.

Blending seamlessly with any interior style, this is a great pick for those who prefer an understated look. One tester said they’d prefer the mist to be dispersed more gently as they found it a touch distracting, but that comes down to personal preference.

Pros

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Lengthy battery life
  • Attractive design

Cons

  • Some testers had issues with the instructions manual
  • Light glow setting could be more powerful

Score: 87/100

If you’re tempted by our chic Neom winner but would prefer something more portable, let us introduce you to the brand’s shiny new Pod Mini+. The lightweight, compact piece of kit is wireless and boasts ‘home and ‘car’ modes, so you can move it from room to room and take it with you on trips. It’s also waterless, so there’s no risk of spillages or mouldy water tanks.

Though some testers thought the instructions could have been clearer, the set-up process was straightforward on the whole. It was also easy to operate via responsive buttons and there are a variety of mist and timer settings to play around with.

Despite its tiny sizes, it pumped Neom’s soul-soothing scents (we love the Bedtime Hero Essential Oil) around our rooms effectively and everyone rated the lengthy battery life of up to 125 (!) hours. “It’s the perfect blend of sleek design and functional elegance,” said one tester, while another commented: “A luxurious product and one that I would consider as a gift.”

Neom Wellbeing Pod Luxe

Pros

  • Premium design
  • Has a breathing mode for relaxation

Cons

  • Some found it noisy

Score: 83/100

This ceramic, white-domed diffuser is perfect for large spaces, such as open-plan kitchen/diners. During testing, our panel raved about the premium look, with one telling us, “It looks beautiful and luxurious.”

Our expert found it easy to set up and use, and they liked the addition of a remote control for convenience. Like its smaller version, and our overall winner, it's also designed to support your wellbeing and help you destress after a long day, with a breathing mode that brightens as you inhale and dims as you breathe out.

Our testers were impressed with how effectively the scent filled bigger rooms, though some would have appreciated the addition of a starter oil in the pack, given the price. A couple of people found it a little noisy, too. That said, one tester said they now couldn’t live without it, while others told us they were going to buy it as a gift for friends or family.

Pros

  • Compact
  • Powerful scent distribution
  • Provides ambient lighting

Cons

  • Changing the oil bottle was messy
  • Isn’t compatible with all oils

Score: 80/100

This is a small but mighty electric diffuser – many of our panellists commented on its power despite its compact size. It has three adjustable mist settings and, at the highest setting, it filled the room with fragrance. “It’s super effective and can really throw out some scent,” said one tester.

The palm-sized device was easy to set up, too. As it doesn’t require water, you simply press the side button to adjust the mist setting. However, changing the oil bottle did get a little messy at times, so take care. Otherwise, it ran smoothly and quietly, and the automatic three-hour shut-off offered added peace of mind.

If you want to bring a little extra zen to your room, the rechargeable device also provides ambient lighting, with one of our testers commenting on how pretty it was at night. The diffuser also comes with three oils: lavender, lemon and peppermint. It's worth noting that it’s not compatible with all essential oils, and they recommend only using pure essential oils, thin fragrance oils or standard oil blends.

What are the benefits of electric diffusers?

Mood-boosting

Aside from making your home smell incredible, the best electric diffusers also allow you to reap the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy.

“Aromatherapy essential oils can have a profound impact on our mood,” says Jo Kellett, aromatherapy essential oil expert at Tisserand. “When inhaled using a diffuser, they travel directly to a part of our brain called the limbic system, which is responsible for interpreting emotional responses, storing memories and regulating hormones.”

“Just by smelling the oils, you experience an emotional change that can help with your stress levels and overall mental wellbeing,” she adds.

Low maintenance

Unlike candles, you don’t have to worry about leaving an open flame unattended and there’s no pesky wick to trim. “A diffuser is great because you can put it on, then just go about your daily tasks,” points out Jo.

Cheap to run

After the initial investment, electric diffusers are cheap to run. They won’t guzzle energy, with a low average power rating of 12W.

If you’re on a mission to tackle your energy consumption, opt for a model with a timer and an automatic shut-off button so it’s not puffing out clouds of soothing oil all night long.

Switching off at the plug and taking it out of the socket when you’ve finished using your diffuser can also help with energy efficiency.

Versatile

Many diffusers, such as our Neom winner, double up as mood lamps and have LED lights that can help enhance the ambience of your space. If you’re keeping yours in the bedroom, it can also work as a night light for reading.

What’s more, you can change the scents as often as you like, depending on your mood and the season.

How to choose an electric diffuser

Here are the key factors to consider on your hunt for the best electric diffuser.

  • Room size: Match the diffuser’s coverage and water capacity to your space. Small units work well in bedrooms and bathrooms, while larger areas like living rooms and kitchens may require a more powerful model with greater output to disperse scent throughout the room.
  • Noise level: Most diffusers are fairly quiet, but some larger designs do emit a hum. Think about where you'll be using it and whether you'd benefit from an ultra-quiet option.
  • Design: Consider how the diffuser will look in your space, especially if it's going to be on display. From sleek ceramic styles to colourful glass finishes, there are plenty of options in our list that will complement your décor. Check the dimensions to make sure the design fits comfortably on your chosen surface without feeling bulky.
  • Ease of use: Decide whether you prefer a water-based diffuser, which creates a fine mist and may add humidity to the air, or a waterless model, which diffuses pure essential oil and can be less messy as there's no need to measure or refill water. Look for intuitive controls, timer settings and automatic shut-off for safety, and opt for a lightweight, battery-powered design if you plan on moving it between rooms.
  • Budget: Consider both the upfront cost of the diffuser and the ongoing expense of essential oil refills. Advanced models with larger tanks, multiple settings and premium finishes will typically cost more initially, while waterless diffusers may use oils more quickly. Think about how often you plan on running your diffuser, as frequent use will increase the cost of replacing oils over time.

Can I use a diffuser around my pets?

If you have pets at home, Jo advises exercising caution, saying it's important to keep your diffuser and essential oils out of reach of your furry friends.

Cat owners should be especially careful. “Cats have very sensitive livers and can’t tolerate essential oils easily,” she says. “If you’re diffusing in a house with cats, make sure you’re only doing so for short periods and that the room you are diffusing in is well ventilated.”

She adds an important reminder that essential oils should never be applied to animals without advice from a qualified aromatherapist or veterinary specialist.

Where is the best place to put a diffuser?

Keep your electronic diffuser in a well-ventilated area on a flat, water-resistant surface. Leave some space around it so the mist can circulate properly and keep it away from direct sunlight and radiators, as heat affects how evenly the scent disperses.

As mentioned above, keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What are the best essential oils to use in a diffuser?

Whether you’re looking to de-stress, relax or focus when you’re working from home, there are hundreds of essential oils to choose from to suit your individual needs. Here, Jo shares some of her favourites.

  • Neroli (citrus aurantium amara): Neroli oil is distilled from the blossom of the orange tree and is known for its stress-reducing, anxiety-easing qualities.
  • Peppermint (mentha pipertia): Peppermint oil, with its cooling, clearing aroma is useful for relieving headaches and can also help with mental clarity.
  • French marjoram (origanum marjorana): This soothing oil is thought to help you get a peaceful night’s rest. Jo recommends adding a few drops to your diffuser 30 minutes before bed and closing the door so the aroma can flood the room. Just remember to set a timer or turn it off before lights out.
  • Frankincense (boswellia carterii): This oil is said to help calm breathing, soothe anxious thoughts and bring a sense of calm to stressful situations. Pop a few drops into your diffuser when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

When shopping for essential oils, it’s important to source genuine, high-quality products that are safe for human consumption and for diffusing indoors. Look for words such as ‘pure’ and ‘organic’ on the label and steer clear of oils that contain synthetic chemicals and pesticides.

Neom, Tisserand and Miaroma are brands known for their high-quality oils.

How often should you clean your electric diffuser?

How often you clean your diffuser depends on how regularly you use it, or what the brands' cleaning guidelines recommend.

“If you use it daily, I recommend cleaning it every fortnight, or whenever you switch oils to prevent unwanted scents from mixing,” advises Aromatherapy Associates master blender, Luke Taylor.

“Unplug it before cleaning, and if it has any leftover water in it, make sure you empty or change it. A wipe over with a damp cloth will help to remove any oil residue or fingerprints, then finish off by wiping it with a dry cloth.”

Some brands, such as Neom, recommend cleaning them after every use, so make sure to read the instructions carefully.

Can you leave an electric diffuser on overnight?

To be on the safe side, avoid leaving an electric diffuser running while you sleep. Although many models have automatic shut-off features, leaving them on all night could irritate your eyes and airways. There’s also a risk that it could overheat or malfunction if it’s left running unattended, so always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

If you want to fall asleep to the scent in your bedroom, Luke has a handy tip. “The fragrance should linger if you switch the diffuser on an hour before bed and turn it off when you go to sleep,” he says.

The verdict on electric diffusers

This is an image

The best electric diffusers for design, ease of use and scent throw are our joint winners, The White Company Electronic Diffuser and the Neom Wellbeing Pod Diffuser – the former is slightly more affordable, while the latter is great for relaxation.

If you're a tighter budget, the Oliver Bonas Electric Aroma Diffuser offers excellent value for under £50.
