Self-tanners for the face are one of the easiest ways to get a natural-looking glow without sun exposure. These self-tanners are especially useful if you wear SPF daily (as you should!) or want to maintain a spray tan between appointments.

Our top picks:

To find the best options, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab consulted Rachel Nazarian, M.D., F.A.A.D., board-certified dermatologist and founder of Nazarian Dermatology in NYC, and Alexa Margulies, owner of Golden Girls New York Spray Tanning, then evaluated formulas based on application, finish, hydration, and user reviews.

Our favorite overall is Loving Tan 2HR Express Face Tanning Serum because it develops quickly, applies evenly, and delivers a natural-looking glow without feeling heavy on the skin.

2HR Express Face Tanning Serum

Pros

  • Infused with skincare ingredients
  • Works in just two hours
  • Formula is tinted for even application

Cons

  • Can cling to dry patches

Delivering color in just two hours, this serum is designed to hydrate and nourish. The formula is tinted to ensure easy, even application, and it’s infused with chamomile extract to soothe.

“The 2HR Express Serum from Loving Tan is great because it has a skincare-infused formula with hyaluronic acid and B5 actives,” says Margulies. “It’s one of our favorites because it is specifically formulated for the face with a skincare-infused formula that has hyaluronic acid and B5 actives. It is lightweight, hydrating, and creates a very natural, even glow.” Be sure to prep properly and hydrate first, since some reviewers reported it can cling to dry patches.

Natural Glow Instant Sun Drops

Pros

  • Customizable color
  • Easy to apply
  • Natural results

Cons

  • May not be ideal for very dry skin

The drugstore brand known for its gradual tanning lotion also makes tanning drops that can be added to any skincare for a more customizable glow, whether you want a hint of color or a beach-worthy faux glow. Either way, the results look natural and radiant. The oil-free formula means you won’t have to worry about the drops making your moisturizer greasy or sticky. Bonus: They can also be used on the body. However, this may not be the best choice for very dry skin, since reviewers with thirsty complexions reported it can exacerbate dryness.

D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops

Pros

  • Includes antioxidants
  • Strengthens skin barrier
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Not an actual self-tanner

When there’s no time to tan, simply mix a few drops of this serum into your moisturizer for a touch of color. “What I like about this product is that it’s multitasking skincare so nicely,” Dr. Nazarian says. “It’s an antioxidant-infused serum that contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and other hydrating and anti-inflammatory ingredients like peptides and fatty acids to strengthen the skin barrier while giving skin a subtle bronze-y hint of color. You can add it to other products like creams or lotions and include it in your daily skincare cycle.” Note that since it’s not an actual tanner, the results are very temporary.

Self-Tan Sun Drops

Pros

  • Infused with organic grape water to nourish
  • Uses natural-origin self-tanner active
  • Customizable color

Cons

  • Some found the color too subtle at first

Completely customizable, these fragrance-free self-tanner drops are made with organic grape water to nourish skin and natural-origin self-tanning active ingredients.

“Caudalie has remarkably flexible Self-Tan Sun Drops that work with a range of skin tones,” Dr. Nazarian says. “It uses DHA as a way to naturally mimic a realistic tan without exposure to the sun. It’s safe for sensitive skin and is fragrance-free. You can use it mixed with any facial lotion or cream and apply daily. The more you use it, the darker your skin will get. Customize the tone based on frequency of use.” Some reviewers said the color is subtle and can take a few uses to build up.

Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist

Pros

  • Develops quickly in a few hours
  • Can be applied over makeup
  • Easy-to-apply mist

Cons

  • Fruity-floral tropical scent is polarizing

Application doesn’t get any easier than spritzing on a face mist; I found it to be absolutely foolproof. Simply spray this quick-drying mist on for a golden glow that only takes a few hours to develop and lasts for days—it doesn’t need to be rinsed off. The light-as-a-feather mist is spiked with hyaluronic acid to hydrate and hibiscus extract to nourish. It can even be applied over makeup. Since it doesn’t transfer, you can apply it before bedtime to wake up with a faux glow. But its fruity-floral tropical scent was polarizing.

Self-Tanning Face Booster Drops

Pros

  • Buildable color
  • Has aloe vera to soothe and hydrate
  • Made with naturally-sourced plant sugars

Cons

  • Takes time to build color

Naturally-sourced plant sugars fuel these tanning drops, which are meant to be mixed into your moisturizer. “Clarins is another option for people searching for something lightweight that they can customize and build to the tint they desire,” Dr. Nazarian says. “It uses DHA with another plant sugar (erythrulose) to slowly create a natural appearing color to the skin. The gel also uses aloe vera and ficus carica (a natural hydrating substance from the fig fruit!) to enhance skin moisture.” This formula also takes time to build color over a few days and is subtle at first, according to reviewers.

How we chose the best self-tanners for the face

double line break

To identify the best facial self-tanners, we consulted a tanning expert and a dermatologist for product recommendations and ingredient guidance. We also included products that Good Housekeeping staffers have personally used and recommend. When making our selections, we considered factors such as ease of application, color evenness, texture, overall feel on skin, and retailer customer ratings. We also analyzed recurring themes in retailer reviews to identify products that consistently performed well for users.

What to look for in a self-tanner for the face

Keep these factors in mind when shopping:

✔️ Designed for the face. “Look for products specifically formulated for the face that contain hydrating, lightweight, and non-comedogenic ingredients,” Margulies says.

✔️ Moisturizing formulas. “Those that have added skin-hydrating ingredients can prolong the time your skin maintains the color, and are often more effective at pigmenting skin cells,” Dr. Nazarian says.

✔️ Natural results. “A natural-looking finish is especially important for the face, which is why many of our clients love skincare-focused tanning products that enhance the complexion without feeling heavy,” Margulies says.

✔️ Buildable color. “Look for those that gradually build tone or can be added to your own moisturizer at home, and allow you to slowly customize your shade over time,” Dr. Nazarian says.

What are the benefits of using a self-tanner for the face?

double line break

“The most valuable benefit is to have a sun-kissed skin tone but with avoidance of actual radiation, which is required for a true tan,” Dr. Nazarian says. “Ultraviolet radiation is super dangerous, and can mutate skin cells and cause skin cancer (in addition to wrinkles, uneven pigment, and thin, crepey skin). Anything we can do to encourage people to stay safe and avoid a tan (which is a direct result of radiation!) is preferred.

“It’s also nice to encourage use of self-tanners because I’ve found that when people feel they have color, they’re less likely to lie out and expose themselves to more sun, especially when on vacation,” Dr. Nazarian says.

How are self-tanners for the face formulated differently from ones for the body?

double line break

“Facial self-tanners are typically formulated with gentler, more skincare-focused ingredients because facial skin is more delicate and sensitive than the body,” Margulies says. “They’re usually lightweight, hydrating, and designed to layer seamlessly with skincare and makeup. While professional body spray tans or self-tans provide an even all-over glow, facial self-tanners are ideal for maintaining color in a more controlled, gradual way on the face.”

What is the best way to apply a self-tanner to the face?

double line break

“We always recommend starting with a self-tanner designed specifically for the face,” Margulies says. She shares step-by-step instructions for applying a self-tanner to the face:

1. Start with freshly cleansed skin.

2. Gently exfoliate to remove dry patches or product buildup at least 24 to 48 hours before application.

3. Start light—you can always build. Blend with a dense brush or mitt for a seamless finish.

4. Don’t forget your ears (lightly!), neck, and down the chest to match your body.

5. Fun tip: Use a little more product on high points to softly contour with the tan (cheekbones, temples, jawline).

What common mistakes should you avoid?

double line break

“The most common mistakes we see are skipping exfoliation, applying product over dry skin, or not removing old self-tanner before application,” Margulies says. “This can lead to uneven development and patchiness. We also recommend avoiding harsh exfoliants, retinols, or strong acids immediately before and after tanning, as they can cause the tan to fade unevenly.”

What is the best way to maintain and prolong a faux tan on your face?

double line break

“Hydration is the key to maintaining a flawless facial tan,” Margulies says. “We recommend using gentle skincare products, avoiding over-exfoliation, and moisturizing daily to keep the skin healthy and the tan even. Many of our clients choose to skip facial spray tanning during appointments and instead maintain their glow at home using a facial self-tanner. It’s a great way to refresh color gradually and keep the face perfectly balanced with the body between spray tan appointments.”

Why is it important to do a patch test?

double line break

“Many people have an allergy or sensitivity to ingredients in skincare products, and certainly even your self-tanner can be a culprit,” Dr. Nazarian says. “You would never want to apply a product to your face that you could potentially be allergic to. I recommend a small patch test whenever starting a new product. This is typically done by applying a very small amount of product to a discreet area with thin skin, such as the inner wrist. Then see how your skin responds to the product overnight. If you experience any redness, irritation, or itchiness, it may be a sign that you have a contact allergy or sensitivity to one of the ingredients being applied.”
