One of the first things I learned as a beauty editor: not much can compete with vitamin C when it comes to brightening skin. Every derm I have interviewed over the years stresses the importance of applying a vitamin C serum in the morning—after cleansing and before moisturizing—both to protect skin from free radical damage (coming from pollution and sunlight) and to brighten dark spots, overall dullness, and hyperpigmentation. Think of vitamin C almost like your coffee—or maybe green juice if that’s your thing—to get your skin going for the day.
Fun (or maybe not so fun) fact about this superstar ingredient: it can be very hard to stabilize within a product formula and thus, keep it at its highest potency. This is why most forms of vitamin C serums come in dark or opaque bottles—especially most researched L-ascorbic acid, which is sensitive to light and air—so when light hits the container, if it is in a clear bottle, it will make it less effective over time. Meaning, less protection and brightening which is less than ideal. Also, dates matter when it comes to vitamin C serums. Be sure to use your serum by the date specified on the bottle, as it may lose its potency and become more irritating after that time.
