When it comes to products for fine hair, you've probably heard of volumizing mousses and root lifting sprays, two big categories for this hair type. But don't sleep on hair powders—they can make a big difference when it comes to thin, sparse strands. "Fine hair needs products that create structure and lift without oils or heavy cream," says Gina Rivera, celebrity hair stylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites. "Powders excel at that because they’re nearly weightless but incredibly effective."

But what exactly are hair powders? Lightweight powders designed to add grip, lift, and movement without stiffness, this category includes root touch-up products, hair fibers, and dry shampoos. "These formulas carry a slight static charge to cling to hair and also repel hair strands from each other, making hair look denser and fuller," says GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. "They create a shadow effect to minimize contrast between the hair and scalp."

Root Cover Up
Credit: Colorwow

Pros

  • Won't flake
  • Can cover both large and small areas
  • Easy to apply

Cons

  • Small amount of actual product

Color Wow's GH Beauty Award-winning formula does more than just cover gray regrowth. In GH Beauty Lab root touch-up testing, users reported that not only did the powder cover gray roots and blend in well with the rest of hair, some noted that it can be brushed onto the scalp near the hairline or part to mask thinning spots. Plus, it comes in eight shades to match every hair color and with a dual-ended brush it's perfect for both large or small sections of hair.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: "Covered the gray and a few hair loss spots," a tester noted, while another commented that "it might not be bad for the occasional small thinning areas too." Plus, testers raved about the ease and simplicity of application with one nothing that it was “easy to apply and not sticky, leaving my hair feeling natural."

GH Beauty Lab evaluations confirmed that 83% of users said it blended naturally with their color, and it scored highly for being easy to use and not messy. Clairol's powder comes in six shades.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: Testers liked that it felt light on hair and went on smoothly, but some found its small size meant it took longer to apply the product.

Pros

  • Super light
  • A little goes a long way
  • Mess-free

Cons

  • May not be as precise application as using a brush

A GH Beauty Award-winning formula, this water-based powder spray gives flat strands an instant boost when applied at the roots. Wizemann is a big fan: "I’m a long-time user of Joico Rise Up Powder Spray; it is so light on hair, and one puff is enough to lift and texturize roots to make them look fuller." Lab evaluations found that since the formula dispenses through a plastic bottle with a pump nozzle rather than an aerosol, it can texturize hair and lift roots in specific areas with minimal mess.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: “It gave my hair really good volume and kept it looking full."

Hair Filler Volumizing Micro-Fibers
AmazonAlso Consider
Credit: Toppik

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Makes hair feel and look thicker
  • Resistant to rain and sweat

Cons

  • Packaging is a little bulky

Both Wizemann and GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek recommend Toppik as a good multitasking option for fine, flat hair. "It is a great two-in-one solution for adding volume and covering gray or roots," says Wizemann. Although, she notes that it's a bit bigger in packaging compared to some of the other products. Vanessa Ocando, IAT certified trichologist & celebrity hairstylist, is also a fan of the fibers "because of the texture and grit it gives the hair," she says. "It instantly makes the hair feel fuller without weighing it down." Made of natural, colored keratin fibers, the micro-fibers come in four shades and should stay in place through rain, wind, and sweat, according to the brand.

WHAT EXPERTS SAY: Wnek tried this on herself and liked that the starter kit comes with a pump applicator that makes dispensing it onto hair easier. "It gives a little grit so hair feels a bit thicker and looks fuller," she says.

Root Touch Up + Brow Filler
Credit: Madison Reed

Pros

  • Won't transfer
  • Can be used on eyebrows
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • May not give significant color coverage

A little goes a long way with Madison Reed's temporary root touch-up powder. While the mirrored compact was created to blend any new color growth in between coloring sessions, it also can help fill in a thinning hairline and sparse brows, thanks to the included dual-ended mini brush; there is a larger brush as well. It comes in six shades including a two-toned blonde option. One thing to note: some users didn't think the powder provided enough color coverage when trying to cover gray regrowth.

WHAT EXPERTS SAY: Wnek uses the product on her eyebrows and likes it, thanks to the small applicator brush.

Prêt-à-powder Dry Shampoo
Credit: Bumble and bumble

Pros

  • Absorbs oil
  • Adds volume and body
  • Extends hairstyle
  • Pleasant, fresh scent

Cons

  • Can be a little messy

A multitasker to the max, Bumble and bumble's super sheer formula blends oat flour, pure silica, and clay to soak up oil and grease. But it doesn't stop there; the translucent powder adds a little grit to the roots for instant lift. "It works like a dry shampoo and a volumizer in one,"says Rivera. "It absorbs oil, boosts body, and gives thin hair just enough texture so styles hold longer without feeling stiff." Just be gentle while applying, as the powder could spread and be a little messy.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: "My hair felt thicker and not greasy," one tester shared. "It definitely added volume."

How we test hair powders for thin hair

linebreak

The GH Beauty Lab has decades of experience evaluating haircare and styling products, including root touch-ups and dry shampoos like those featured in this article. In the Lab, scientists evaluate products using specialized instruments and hands-on assessments, and they also conduct consumer testing.

For consumer studies, Beauty Lab scientists label-mask products to eliminate brand bias, then send them to testers across the country to use over a set period. Testers report back on factors like ease of application, texture, look and feel on hair, and overall performance.

The products featured here include five formulas that performed well in previous GH Beauty Lab haircare testing, along with additional picks recommended by Beauty Lab scientists and beauty experts based on their experience with the category.

What to look for when shopping for the best hair powder for thin hair

linebreak

"The best hair powders for thin hair are lightweight, invisible, and designed to create lift without weighing the hair down," says celebrity hairstylist Marcos Diaz. Here's what to look for (and avoid) while shopping:

✔️ Ultra-fine texture. "The best powders are finely milled and nearly invisible in the hair, so they add texture and volume without clumping or leaving a chalky residue."

✔️ Lightweight ingredients. "Look for starch-based powders like rice or tapioca that absorb oil and create lift without heaviness," suggests Rivera.

✔️ No waxes. "Steer clear of heavy powders or formulas that contain too much wax or buildup-forming ingredients—these can make fine hair look dull, stiff, or greasy," says Diaz.

✔️ Optional color tint. "Tinted powders can be helpful if your scalp shows through your part because they reduce the contrast between scalp and hair," says Rivera.

✔️ A good shade range. "Finding the right shade helps with blending properly and keeping the hair looking natural," says Wizemann.

Is hair powder good for thinning hair?

Hair powder won’t treat thinning hair, but it can instantly give the illusion of thick hair. "Hair powder helps hair appear fuller by creating separation between strands and giving the hair more structure," says Diaz. Plus, "they absorb oils that cause hair to collapse," says Rivera. However, they should be viewed as a styling enhancer rather than a treatment.

One thing to note: Ocando always recommends washing hair after you’ve used powder because when it sits on the scalp, it mixes with sebum, can harden, and lead to product buildup. "Don’t be afraid to wash your hair," she says. "A clean scalp leads to healthy hair growth."

"If I had to recommend one styling category, it would be a lightweight volumizing powder or root-lift product," says Rivera. "Fine hair needs products that create structure and lift without oils or heavy creams," she explains. "Powders excel at that because they’re nearly weightless but incredibly effective."

How do you use hair powder on thin hair?

When it comes to hair powder, less is more. A small amount at the roots can dramatically increase volume.

"Sprinkle a light dusting directly at the roots where you want lift, usually at the crown or along the part," says Diaz. "Then gently massage it into the scalp with your fingertips to activate the product and create volume and texture." When applied correctly, hair powder adds grip and separation between strands, which instantly helps fine hair appear fuller.

Ocando always recommends practicing before using powder on a finished hairstyle so you learn how to control it. "Start with a little and build slowly, and remember that it’s much easier to add than to take away," she says.
