Pros
Flexible cage at heel makes slipping on the shoe easier
Breathable material for hot days or sweaty workouts
Lightweight
Cons
Not supportive enough for running
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Pretty much anyone might like this all-around no-fuss pick, which is an excellent choice for everyday, traveling, or walking.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Cushioned and lightweight, these slip-on sneakers are comfortable to walk around in, thanks to the flexible built-in thermoplastic cage within the heel that compresses and bounces back after your feet slide into the shoe. In all of our years of sneaker testing, we have never seen a feature like this cage from another brand. A few consumer testers noted that these sneakers aren't as supportive as other options, so they may not be the best pair for running.
We love the classic, sporty appearance of these sneakers that come in simple neutrals, but you can also opt for bolder colors and patterns on Kizik's website. The upper knit material is breathable for particularly hot days or sweaty workouts, and the removable insoles are washable, which helps keep these sneakers smelling clean and fresh. And since they're lightweight, these slip-on shoes are travel-friendly. Slip them on and off at the airport during TSA check-in or throw them in your luggage. There are wide sizes are available, and if you're looking to snag a deal, we also loved the previous iteration of this shoe, which goes for a lower price.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: One of our consumer testers who has Parkinson's shared that the previous iteration of the Kizik Athens sneakers was easier for him to get on than any of his other shoes. "You really can just jump into them," shared another tester. Another told us, "It's very convenient for when I realize I only have a minute to run to the school and pick up my daughter." Testers also reported that the shoes fit them well, are comfortable for long walks, and feel "like walking on clouds."

Pros
Testers said they were comfortable
Lightweight and breathable upper
Budget friendly
Cons
Not as stylish or supportive
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Those shopping on a budget will appreciate this pair's affordable price point, which is a fraction of the cost of other styles on the market.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: When we evaluated walking sneakers, our consumer testers found these Tiosebon Slip-On shoes to be comfortable. Our pros like that they are completely lace-free with a stretchy knit upper and a sock-like fit, which makes it easy to slip them on and off. Textiles, Paper, and Apparel Lab Associate Director Emma Seymour shared, "When I tested these shoes, I loved the easy slip-on design, perfect for commuting or quick errands—and the airy upper that never felt sweaty." Seymour did note that these aren't as supportive as other shoes, so they shouldn't be used for running.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: Even though the shoes don't offer as much support or stability, they are lightweight and breathable. One tester said, "they're easy on, easy off," but overall, testers didn't give high ratings for the shoes' appearance.

Pros
Versatile sneaker that can go business casual
Comfortable for flat feet and bunions
Machine washable (except for insoles)
Long lasting
Cons
Can get dirty quickly
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Someone looking for a comfortable, breathable sneaker that's suitable for a business-casual outfit or commuting; those with flat feet and bunions can also benefit from this sneaker.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Rothy's is best known for its machine-washable shoes, which range in style from sneakers like these to flats, boots, and heels. Supportive, comfortable sneakers typically don't match the business casual vibe at the office, but these slip-on sneakers from Rothy's fit the bill. The cushioned footbed adds extra comfort and support that other flats or similar-looking sneakers provide.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: Our testers found that the flexible upper material is breathable, which helps with bunions and sweaty feet while walking. Although the price of these shoes is on the higher end, they'll withstand years of wear—one of our testers has washed these shoes multiple times and still reaches for them every summer. "They are super comfortable, support my bunion, and are even good for my flat feet," said our consumer tester. She noted that the light color lends itself to becoming dirty pretty quickly. Just note that the insoles must be removed before throwing the shoes in the washing machine.

Pros
Breathable and lightweight design
Top scores for comfort
Nonrestrictive fit, thanks to mesh front
Cons
Thinner midsole offers less cushioning
Some sizing availability issues
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: New Balance shoes are a top recommendation for individuals with wide feet, but the FuelCore Nergize V1 in particular is great for anyone who wants a lightweight and nonrestrictive shoe for walking or commuting.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: We like that the mesh front allows freedom of movement, a non-restrictive fit, breathability, and a more comfortable feel if you have bunions. The tongue stays in place when you slip the shoes on and off, so you don't have to waste time adjusting. Another perk? Our testers found the shoes comfortable right out of the box (a.k.a. no break-in period). "Right when I put them on, they started molding to my feet," reported one of our testers.
Note that this sneaker has a thinner midsole, so it has less cushioning than some other styles—although our testers still gave high scores for the cushion it does offer. Also, many sizes are typically out of stock, so you may not be able to get the exact color you want in your size.

Pros
Available in 40+ colors
Comfortable, even for longer distances
Responsive sole
Cons
Flexible design was not as supportive
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Those looking for a lightweight, non-bulky shoe that is still comfortable enough to wear on longer walks.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: You have probably seen at least one (and probably more) walkers sporting On Cloud sneakers. The popular shoes perform well in our evaluations, including the On Cloud 5 Sneakers. Seymour was also impressed with how comfortable these shoes felt during her long walks around her neighborhood. The sneakers have a flexible, responsive sole, meaning the shoe's sole compresses and bounces back quickly to propel you forward with each step. Plus, the shoe is available in 42 colors.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: Multiple testers commented on how lightweight the shoes felt. “The shoes are impressively lightweight, and I thought they wouldn't offer enough support, but they were surprisingly comfortable,” said one tester. Note, though, that some testers didn't find the support to be adequate enough.

Pros
Side elastic for easy slipping on
Simple, classic style is great for everyday wear
Padded collar feels comfortable against heel
Easy to clean
Cons
Not cushioned
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Teens, adults, and everyone in between will love these reasonably priced shoes that have practically become an icon.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: Vans Slip-On sneakers were popular among my friends throughout school, and they're still a solid option for a casual sneaker. The side elastic on these shoes makes it easy to slip them on and off. Whether you're a college student going to a party or you need a cute, slip-on sneaker for everyday, these are comfortable to walk in and budget-friendly. They don't have any cushioning or support like a true running or walking sneaker, but they're great for daily wear. There are plenty of color options and checkered patterns, and the extensive size range is ideal for those with very small or large feet. When the sneakers begin to look dirty, clean the rubber section with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to keep them looking fresh.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: "I found these shoes easy to slip on and off (especially when running off to class), thanks to a side elastic detail. The padded collar felt comfortable against my heel, and I liked the spacious design that didn't cramp my toes and meant that I could wear warmer socks in the fall or winter," said one GH Editor. She also called these sneakers her go-to shoes all throughout college.

Pros
Preppy style with a sneaker-like sole
Tons of colors
Not as chunky compared to other loafers
Cons
Some online reviewers found the shoes to not fit properly
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Commuters looking for an easy shoe to slip on that looks stylish for the office
WHY WE LOVE THEM: When sneakers aren't dressy enough, these loafers can seamlessly transition between activities, from the office to a stroll in the park to happy hour drinks with friends. I am obsessed with all the color options for these shoes, including a deep red for a pop of color and a classic brown leather to add to a capsule wardrobe. The shoes are also less chunky than other loafers out there, so you can easily throw them in a bag for travel.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: "I have owned four different loafers in my post-college years (including the Uptown Loafer from Vionic)," said one of our GH testers. "My main gripe with loafers is that I find them to be less comfortable than a pair of ballet flats or slip-on sneakers. This loafer, however, slips on easily and offers enough support that my feet don't hurt after wearing them to work or around the city. I thought they would be a little too preppy for me, but honestly, they aren't too chunky and are versatile enough that I can pair them with a variety of outfits." While our testers did not have issues with the sizing, some online reviewers mentioned the shoes fitting them too snugly, and others said the shoes were too big. Be sure to check the size guide and opt for the wider width if you have wide feet, and regular if your feet are narrow.

Pros
Flexible upper
Comfortable fit
Lightweight cushioning
Cons
Knit upper can fold when laces are tight
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Runners who are often rushing to squeeze in a run, or anyone who wants a cushioned running shoe that is also comfortable over bunions.
WHY WE LOVE THEM: While I don't currently run in slip-on sneakers, I do loathe spending time tying unruly laces. You can speed up your getting-ready routine with the Ultraboost 5X Shoes, a newer, lighter-weight version of the Ultraboost 22 that we recently tested during our quest for the best running shoes. The sneakers feature pockets of cushioning throughout the shoe to help propel you forward and absorb shock upon impact.
WHAT TESTERS SAID: When we evaluated a similar version, testers reported the sneakers "fit like a glove," were easy to take on and off, and were even comfortable for those with bunions, thanks to a stretchy knit upper. These shoes do not have a tongue, so the knit upper can sometimes fold when the laces are pulled very tightly, which is what Seymour experienced when she tested them.

Pros
Versatile for hiking, walking, and traveling
Convenient tab to secure adjustable cord
Good traction
Cons
Can run narrow
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: HOKA fans who are looking for a lifestyle shoe that features the cushioning they know and love
WHY WE LOVE THEM: There is certainly a trend of wearing hiking-style sneakers around town. The HOKA Transport can be worn during a plethora of activities (including but not limited to hiking). They also come with regular laces, too.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: Our testers wore them while walking, jogging, and lifting weights. "I love the stretch laces with the no-tie pull tab (perfect for my laziness)," added one of our consumer testers. The shoes feature a tab on top of the tongue that lets you keep the adjustable cord tucked in. Another one of our testers said, "While I plan to primarily wear these sneakers while running errands, exploring the city, and walking in the park, I would wear them hiking too due to the grippy outer sole. They are the perfect versatile shoes to bring on vacation." Our testers found them to fit true to size with enough wiggle room in the toe box, but they run a bit narrow.
If the Hoka Transport sneakers are out of stock in your size, check out the newest iteration of the shoe, the Hoka Transport 2.

Pros
Water resistant
Easy to clean
Great for gardening
Come in fun colors
Cons
Limited size range
WHO THEY'RE BEST FOR: Someone looking for water-resistant shoes that are easier to put on than rain boots, as well as gardeners in search of easy-to-clean clogs
WHY WE LOVE THEM: While Crocs are great for around the pool, the holes can make your feet cold and wet on rainy days, but the Bodega Clogs from SeaVees will offer protection from the rain or mud. The striped webbing on the back pull tab not only looks cute, but it also makes it easier to slip these shoes on and off. The shoe's exterior is made of natural rubber and recycled natural rubber, so you can wipe them down to clean them. There are no half sizes or different width options, so it may not be the perfect fit for your foot. They also come in tons of fun colors.
WHAT OUR TESTERS SAID: One of our testers noted that these shoes are ideal for gardening, since you can simply kick them off to prevent tracking dirt into the house. This tester said, "They are super comfortable and look more put-together than Crocs. I got them for gardening in the spring and summer, but I have to say, I've been wearing them all the time this winter for school drop-off, walking the dog, and just in and around the house." Seymour also owns these shoes and said she "loves them."

How we test the best slip-on shoes

Most recently, our pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab tested over 50 shoes with more than 250 consumer testers who have responded to extensive surveys with details about comfort, support, appearance, and fit.
For this story, we also considered top picks from our tests on flats and shoes for nurses, the latter of which involved over 20 health professionals evaluating shoes. We also considered shoes recommended by our pros in the Textiles Lab and by our editors.
What to look for when shopping for the best slip-on shoes

✔️ Comfort: As with any shoe you put on your foot, comfort is the most important factor to keep in mind. If you experience any pinching, rubbing, irritation, etc. when you first try on a shoe, it is probably not the shoe for you, explains Seymour. This may mean another size will fit better, or you might need a different style (more on both below).
✔️ Fit: "Slip-on shoes may fit looser by design because there are no laces to secure them," says Seymour—but that doesn't mean your feet should be slipping out. "Your heel shouldn’t pop out the back and you should be able to wiggle your toes with a bit of space between your toes and the front of the shoe," explains Seymour. Some shoes are available in narrow sizing for a better fit and, on the flip side, if you find a shoe is too tight, consider a style with wide sizing so your shoe doesn't restrict circulation.
✔️ Style: Slip-on shoes are a versatile category that can be worn for various activities. When choosing a new shoe, make sure to reflect on how you plan to use the shoe. For example, if you want a stylish shoe or plan to wear them for everyday wear, you don't need as much cushioning or arch support. However, if you want to wear a slip-on shoe for longer walks, runs, or workouts, you will need a shoe that provides "ample support with a proper fit and ample traction," says Seymour.
Are slip-on shoes supportive?

It depends, explains Seymour. Some slip-on shoes offer arch support but not all do. Styles similar to Vans "are very flat with minimal arch support," says Seymour.
Other slip-on shoes feature stretchy laces that are akin to wearing regular lace-up sneakers. You can also buy stretchy laces separately if you want to turn your favorite supportive shoe into a slip-on sneaker.
