One of the first devices I eagerly took home to try when I joined the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab years ago was an at-home IPL hair reduction device. Since then, new IPL devices have continued to launch and my colleagues and I in the Lab have shaved and zapped ourselves to test many of them. In GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann’s most recent test, we sent the devices to 13 testers around the country to get their feedback.
There are two main types of devices: laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). "Both minimize or eliminate hair, but differ in light type, effectiveness, and precision," explains Wizemann. "Laser devices use a focused wavelength of light for precise and targeted results, while IPL emits broad-spectrum light that covers larger areas but may require more sessions." While we have evaluated both over the years, all of our top picks fall under the IPL category, as this technology is more common in at-home tools.
Our top picks:
- Best Overall: Philips Lumea 9000 Series IPL Hair Removal Device
- Best Value: Nood The Flasher 2.0
- Best for Sensitive Skin: Silk’n Motion Premium
- Best for Thick Hair: Ulike Air 10 IPL Hair Removal
Our hot take? We think they’re worth the commitment. We’ve found that when used consistently, IPL devices can reduce hair growth long-term with little discomfort (just a few hot zaps) for about the cost of one professional treatment session. These tools don’t work on everyone—they’re not suitable for deeper skin tones or light hair—but if you’re a candidate and you use it diligently, an at-home IPL device can keep your unwanted hair at bay.
