When it comes to vacuums, few brands inspire as much buzz or command as high a price as Dyson. So, are Dyson vacuums worth the investment? After testing dozens of the brand's most popular models in the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, our experts can confidently say many of them are.

Our top picks:

Dyson is known for innovations like powerful cyclone technology, automatic suction adjustment, tangle-resistant brush rolls, and laser illumination that helps reveal hidden dust. Paired with strong filtration and user-friendly bagless designs, these features make many Dyson models stand out from the competition. To help you choose the right one for your home, we rounded up the best Dyson vacuums based on extensive Lab testing and real-world performance.

    V12 Detect Slim+ Cordless Vacuum

    Pros

    • Excellent suction with both bare floors and edges
    • Weighs just 5.2 pounds
    • Ran for just over 50 minutes in Eco mode

    Cons

    • No backup battery included

In our latest tests, the lightweight V12 had powerful suction that impressed our Lab experts and earned it top marks for bare-floor cleaning, pet hair pickup, and edge cleaning.

The model features Dyson's innovative laser-equipped Fluffy Optic cleaner head, which illuminates fine dust and hair that can be difficult to see with the naked eye. A colorful LCD screen provides real-time information, including battery life, power mode, maintenance reminders, and even the size and amount of particles being collected. It also comes with several useful tools, including Dyson's cone-shaped Hair Screw Tool, which lifts pet hair and spirals it directly into the bin to prevent tangles.

Battery life is impressive, too. In Eco mode, our testers got just over 50 minutes of run time. Our only complaint? It doesn't come with a spare battery, though you can purchase one separately.

Ball Animal 3 Extra Upright Vacuum Cleaner

    Pros

    • Removable wand for hard-to-reach spots
    • Equipped with an anti-tangle motorbar
    • Maneuvers very well, despite its size

    Cons

    • Bulky and heavy

It's hardly a budget buy, but when it comes to Dyson, value is about performance, not bargain pricing. And if you have a lot of carpeting, the Ball Animal 3 delivers plenty of bang for your buck. Upright vacuums are heavier than stick models (this one weighs 17.3 pounds), but they're also among the best at lifting embedded dirt from carpet. In our tests, the Ball Animal 3 more than proved its cleaning power.

Despite its size, the vacuum is surprisingly easy to maneuver on both carpet and hard floors and earned top marks for debris pickup. Like other Dyson models, it has an easy-to-empty dustbin. It features the same anti-tangle Motorbar brush roll found on the V15 Detect, which continuously clears wrapped hair from the brush as you clean, making it especially useful for homes with pets. It also automatically adjusts suction and includes whole-machine filtration to help capture dust and pet dander.

Though it lacks a Lift-Away-style design that lets you separate the canister from the base for easier above-floor cleaning, the removable wand still makes it simple to reach baseboards, drapes, furniture, and other tricky areas. And because it's corded, you'll never have to worry about battery life.

    Car+Boat Handheld Vacuum
    Credit: Dyson

    Pros

    • Runs for up to 25 minutes
    • Only weighs 2.1 pounds
    • Two suction modes

    Cons

    • Have to hold trigger continuously

Handheld vacuums are perfect for quick cleanups and tackling hard-to-reach spots, whether that's crumbs under kitchen cabinets, debris in corners, or dirt in your car. While some Dyson stick vacuums, including the V15 Detect, convert into handhelds, the brand also makes a dedicated portable model.

Despite its compact size, it's a capable little cleaner. It comes with three attachments: a worktop tool for hard surfaces like countertops, a combination crevice tool for getting into tight spaces, and Dyson's Hair Screw Tool, which picks up pet and human hair without tangling.

There's no denying it's more expensive than many competing handhelds, but we were impressed by its strong, consistent suction and 25-minute run time—longer than we see from many of our top-tested handheld vacuums. It also offers two power modes, including a Max setting for tougher messes. And, like other Dyson vacuums, it features whole-machine filtration to help keep dust and debris trapped inside the machine where it belongs. On the downside, you have to hold the trigger continuously, which can lead to fatigue—particularly if you're cleaning a bigger mess.

    360 Vis Nav
    Credit: Dyson

    Pros

    • Incredible suction power
    • Better edge cleaning capabilities than competing robot vacuums
    • Effortless setup and control with a user-friendly companion app, built-in LCD screen, and support for Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice controls and routines.
    • Washable HEPA filter

    Cons

    • No self-emptying feature or built-in mop
    • Shorter run time and longer charging

The brand claims this machine is the world's most powerful robot vacuum. It delivers 65 air watts of suction, which is roughly double that of competing models. Its distinctive D-shaped design is engineered to direct suction to the edges and corners—areas where many robot vacuums struggle. In our tests, we also appreciated that it didn't scatter debris the way some robots with spinning side brushes can.

In Auto mode, the vacuum intelligently boosted suction when it encountered a mixture of flour and crumbs embedded in carpet fibers, leaving test floors nearly spotless. It performed just as well on hardwood, thanks to a versatile cleaner head with an extra-large soft roller and stiff nylon bristles. The 360 Vis Nav also excelled at picking up pet hair and features a removable, washable HEPA filter that helps eliminate the need for replacement filters. Its dustbin is larger than average, though it doesn't come with a self-emptying base and there's no mopping functionality.

Dyson says the robot can run for up to 65 minutes, but actual run time varies based on factors such as home size, floor type, debris levels, and power settings. In our testing, the battery lasted closer to 35 minutes before the 360 Vis Nav needed to recharge. With a two-hour charging time, larger homes may require multiple cleaning sessions to finish the job.

best dyson vacuums testing how well a vacuum cleans carpet
    Jillian Sollazzo

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we've tested hundreds of vacuum cleaners across virtually every category and brand, including most of Dyson's top-performing models. Our experts are continually evaluating new releases to see how they stack up against the competition.

We also serve on ASTM International's F11 Vacuum Cleaner Committee, meeting twice a year with engineers and technical representatives from across the industry to help develop and refine standardized test methods for assessing vacuum performance, ease of use, durability, and more.

To ensure fair comparisons, every vacuum we test undergoes the same rigorous evaluations in accordance with ASTM International industry standards. We measure how effectively each model removes large and fine debris—from gritty sand to dried orzo pasta—from hard floors, how well it cleans along edges, and how much suction power its tools deliver. To simulate pet hair, we evenly distribute industry-standard rayon fibers across carpet and assess how thoroughly each machine picks them up.

We also evaluate maneuverability, control layout, battery life for cordless models, and ease of emptying the dust cup, changing a bag, or performing routine maintenance. Weight, comfort, and any standout features or brand claims are considered, too, so our recommendations reflect not just cleaning power but the overall experience.

What to consider when shopping for a Dyson vacuum

    line break

✔️ Floor type: If you primarily have hard floors, a soft roller head that won’t scratch the surface is ideal. For carpets or a mixture of both types, a vacuum with a bristle-brush bar is better at removing deep-seated dirt from carpets and crevices. A few Dyson stick vacuums come with multiple cleaner heads that you can swap between based on floor type.

✔️ Size and weight: Weight is a big determinant of how comfortable it will be to lift and handle the vacuum. Handheld vacuums are smaller and lighter, while upright vacuums tend to be among the heaviest and hardest to store.

✔️ Attachments: These extras are crucial for a thorough clean. At minimum, you'll want a crevice tool, but many of Dyson's vacuums come with far more. They're known for the hair screw tool, which tackles hair without the tangles and is great for pet owners.

✔️ Run time: Corded vacuums run for as long as you’d like, but cordless models like robot vacuums, handheld vacuums, and stick vacuums are beholden to their batteries. To figure out how long your vacuum’s battery needs to last, measure your home's square footage and divide it by 50. Keep in mind that turbo cleaning modes and rotating brush attachments drain the battery fast, so if you use these settings and attachments, the battery may run out before you finish cleaning your entire home. Having a second spare battery charged and ready is a helpful solution.
