I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t have room for a full-size blowdryer in my suitcase when I travel. I used to debate about whether or not to take some shoes out and squeeze it in—because we all know those hotel dryers usually don’t cut it—but luckily I don’t have to overthink it anymore, and neither do you.

The best travel hair dryers on the market today are both smaller and mightier than ever, with some of the same bells and whistles you'd find on a standard-size hair dryer. Though regular dryers "typically emphasize power and are known to have more advanced styling features for faster and more efficient drying," says Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann, many current travel hair dryers have multiple speed and heat setting options just like their bigger, bulkier counterparts.

Our top picks:

✔️ Best Overall: BaByLissPRO Nano Titanium™ Light Ionic High-Speed Dryer

Testers loved how fast it dried their hair and the customizable settings.

✔️ Best Value: Ella Bella Infrared Foldable Hair Dryer

It uses infrared heat technology to reduce damage.

✔️ Most Powerful: Bio Ionic AeroGravity Featherlight Hair Dryer

The turbo tool had the fastest speed and volume of air coming out of the nozzle, plus one of the highest temperatures of those tested.

✔️ Best for Thick Hair: Conair Infinitipro DigitalAIRE Dryer

It was unanimous—100% of testers said it made their hair look smooth and many felt it left hair frizz-free.

We know how important a good hair tool is, so the GH Beauty Lab regularly tests all types of hair dryers, hair dryer brushes, and other hair tools both in the Lab (on human hair samples) and on consumer testers, who share their thoughts on how easy they are to use and how well they work. In our most recent test of travel hair dryers, we evaluated 15 models and recorded over 3,500 data points (including temperature and airflow measurements, the weight of the tools, and consumer feedback) to determine which delivered the most gorgeous, salon-level blowouts.

Check out our top picks, which include the winning models from our test, plus tips from celebrity hairstylists Clariss Rubenstein and Nick Stenson.

Pros

  • Customizable settings
  • Dries hair quickly
  • Strong airflow

Cons

  • Doesn't fold

Weighing in at less than a pound, BaBylissPro’s newest dryer is the brand’s lightest, smallest, and highest speed dryer. It has nine LED heat and speed settings, auto dual voltage, and comes with a concentrator nozzle, straightening pic, and diffuser. The one negative: it doesn’t fold up.

We put this pretty blue tool to the test in the Lab and it had the best consumer performance score, the fastest air speed, and the highest recorded air temperature at the nozzle of the dryer. Testers gave it perfect scores for the customizable controls, drying hair quickly, and the strong and consistent airflow.

Pros

  • Comfortable to hold
  • Doesn't damage hair
  • Attachments are easy to take on and off

Cons

  • Not ideal for diffusing hair

Our most budget-friendly pick, Ella Bella’s dryer packs a big (but gentle) punch with both plasma technology to help reduce frizz and improve shine, and infrared heat technology, which is designed to reduce excessive heat stress on the hair compared to traditional high-heat styling methods. The settings go to a max temperature of 250 degrees which is shown on its digital screen.

Tester notes: They gave it perfect scores for being comfortable to hold (even for an extensive amount of time), for not damaging hair, and for the easy-to-use attachments. A few did mention that diffusing hair was difficult with this tool.

“Right off the bat, it is so light, “ one tester said. “With my current dryer, my arms get tired—but not with this! I thought I would just use it for travel, but this has booted my current dryer to the linen closet.”

Pros

  • High air temperature
  • Dries hair quickly
  • Foldable

Cons

  • Hard to turn the dryer on and off when blow drying due to the location of on/off button

This foldable dryer from Bio Ionic uses the brand’s signature ion mineral technology to hep reduce frizz and static as you style. It has a unique on/off feature located at the end of the handle that is designed as a dial, which the Lab found convenient during drying because it is less likely to be pressed accidentally while styling—although it was more difficult to turn the dryer on and off when pausing or resuming, since it requires both hands.

The tool excelled when tested it in the Lab, with the fastest speed and volume of air coming out of the nozzle and one of the highest temperatures, all of which made it a top dryer overall.

Tester notes: When asked what she liked about the dryer, one tester exclaimed, “Everything! It’s lightweight, quiet, and easy to maneuver. I love the lock feature, travel flex handle, and the easy to clean filter.”

Pros

  • Attachments go on easily
  • Dries hair quickly
  • Strong airflow

Cons

  • Some found it heavy

Boasting 12 heat and speed combinations, this dryer from Gamma+ truly has a setting for every hair type and texture. Our testers found it very easy to use and ranked it high for overall performance, noting that it dries hair quickly, adds volume, and has a strong airflow. They especially liked the easy-to-attach accessories and long cord, along with its comfortable grip and an effective cool shot. Their one complaint: the weight. A few testers felt the dryer was heavy.

Tester notes: “The buttons and controls were easy to use, and you could lock in your selections, which was an innovative and helpful feature for styling,” one shared. “I loved everything about this hair dryer,” another raved. “It was surprisingly quiet and incredibly easy to use, and I had amazing hair days every time I used it.”

Pros

  • Comfortable to hold
  • Reduces frizz
  • Dries and styles hair quickly

Cons

  • Doesn't fold
  • No travel bag

Think Dyson’s superstar (quiet and powerful) dryer but in a lightweight, compact version. With this dual voltage travel model, the traditional in-line power supply box on the cord has been eliminated, making the cord lighter and easier to travel with and store. “It has a shorter handle which is still comfortable to hold, and we found the tool much easier to maneuver,” says Wizemann.

The Lab was surprised that it doesn’t include a travel bag and doesn’t fold, but found that it dries and styles hair quickly, leaving it soft and “healthy” looking. Our testers gave it top marks for drying speed, creating their desired looks, reducing frizz, and providing strong, consistent airflow.

Tester notes: “I liked that it was super lightweight and easy to maneuver without feeling like my arm was gonna fall off,” one said. “I also really liked the short nozzle because it felt like I could control the dryer easier. It felt just as powerful as a regular hairdryer.

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Easy and comfortable to use
  • Great for enhancing natural waves and curls
  • High temperature and strong airflow

Cons

  • One found it hard to hold without touching controls

An updated version of the OG Drybar Buttercup, this one has a few new features that separate it from the rest: the Drybar mode, a heat setting that automatically alternates between warm and cool temperatures to prevent hair from getting dried out, and the Smart Attachment Memory mode which automatically recognizes the connected attachment and its last used heat, airflow, and ion setting.

In the Lab, the brightly-colored dryer had one of the highest temperatures measured at the nozzle of the dryer and was above average for airflow. In addition to getting a perfect score for not being loud, testers found it very easy and comfortable to use and loved the results, especially for enhancing natural waves and curls. One did find it difficult to hold without touching the controls.

Tester notes: “I loved having the two different attachments for when I wanted different things for my hair,” said one. “The hair dryer knew what attachments I was using and adjusted the temperatures for me.” Another noted the quiet volume: “I liked that it was quieter than other hair dryers,” she said. “It had better settings, and I really liked the feature that provided a cool blast every so often.”

How we test travel hair dryers

two double lines

In our hair dryer tests, Beauty Lab pros measure factors including surface temperature and ease of use, including comfort of hold, weight, and cord length.

In our most recent travel hair dryer test, we evaluated 15 travel hair dryers launched within the past two years, spanning a range of prices, and offering nationwide availability. We measured airflow, air speed, and temperature, as well as drying speed on standardized human hair samples. We also rated noise level and ease of use, including the comfort of hold, ease of putting on and removing attachments, and location of controls and buttons. Each of the 15 dryers was then sent to up to four consumer testers for at-home use. Testers evaluated ease of use, comfort, styling performance, and overall satisfaction through detailed surveys.

After combining Beauty Lab measurements with consumer survey scores, the Beauty Lab selected 10 top-performing dryers for additional testing. The 10 finalists underwent repeated drying-rate tests using standardized human hair swatches to compare how quickly and efficiently they dried hair.

Across our testing of the 15 dryers and 10 finalists, we collected 1,860 temperature measurements, 360 airflow and speed readings, 1,155 tester ratings, and 165 written comments. We used these results to identify models that performed well in the Lab and with consumer testers at home. This list contains the seven highest-performing models from the 10 finalists.

If you are traveling internationally, take note that most of the travel dryers we included here feature dual voltage, meaning these mini blow dryers can function in the United States and abroad, so no worries about blowing a fuse.

What to look for in a travel hair dryer

two double lines

We asked Rubenstein and Stenson for their best shopping advice on mini hair dryers:

✔️ Size: You'll find varied weight and size options with travel dryers, but Stenson suggests keeping it under 1.5 pounds. Another bonus with purchasing a travel dryer is finding one that collapses or folds to allow for easier packing, he adds.

✔️ Wattage: Voltage and wattage should be more of a concern if you’re traveling internationally. Stenson recommends 1875 watts as the sweet spot for most hair dryers.

✔️ Voltage: For international travel, you’ll want to make sure it has dual voltage so it can function in the United States and abroad. Otherwise, using an adapter with a standard voltage hair dryer can potentially blow a fuse and ruin your hair tool, so proceed with caution.

✔️ Attachments: A great travel dryer should also come with a concentrator and diffuser attachments for versatility, says Stenson.

Is a travel hair dryer worth it?

two double lines

If you use a blowdryer daily, yes. "For the moderate to the avid traveler, travel dryers are a fabulous investment that saves space and unnecessary weight in your luggage and keeps you looking your best on the go," says Stenson.

While travel hair dryers serve the same fundamental purpose as their full-size counterparts (drying and styling hair), they're "usually more compact and lightweight, and are designed to work with a variety of voltage standards and adaptability to different outlets in ways regular dryers typically are not," says Wizemann.

They may not have the same high-power performance as their full-sized counterparts, but they're still likely better than what you'll find in your hotel. "Even though a hotel blowdryer will do its job, it almost never has the same features as higher quality brands," Rubenstein adds.

Can you bring a travel hair dryer in a carry-on?

double line break

Yes, TSA approves hair dryers for packing in both carry-on and checked baggage. Wizemann recommends protecting it from other liquids by packing it in a separate waterproof bag, and padding the hair dryer between soft clothing for additional protection.
