A backpack diaper bag might not hold as much as some of the giant diaper totes, but many can easily hold a day's worth of supplies, plus keep your hands free to tend to your baby or toddler. They're also great for family travel—our own Good Housekeeping Institute Lab pros who are parents use a backpack-style diaper bag in theme parks and on outdoor outings. Most diaper bags come with a changing pad, insulated bottle pocket, and wipeable lining with babies in mind, but these backpacks will remain useful when you have an older kid and are still carting around water bottles, snacks, and kid's sunscreen.

Our top picks

To choose our winners, Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab experts evaluate diaper backpacks for capacity, organization, comfort, and useful features. We also send bags to parents for real-world testing to see how they perform during everyday outings and travel. Our top pick, the Dagne Dover Indi, combines functionality with sleek good looks.

Pros

  • Stylish design with large capacity that doesn’t look like a traditional diaper bag
  • Available in three sizes and five colors
  • Helpful organization features, including key leashes and multiple storage pouches
  • Includes a laptop sleeve and trolley sleeve
  • GH Parenting Awards winner

Cons

  • Bottle holder can detach or shift, allowing bottles to move around
  • Some testers found the large size bulky

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: The Indi isn't a newcomer, but it's a favorite among real parents and GH experts—it's a 2026 Good Housekeeping Parenting Awards winner. We love that it doesn't scream "diaper bag"; instead, it looks like any on-trend bag, while secretly offering enough space to store everything from a breast pump to diapers. It's offered in five shades and three sizes, so you can choose the capacity that's right for your family, and a compact, wipeable changing pad is included. The 17-liter Large size is pictured, but some consumer testers found it too bulky.

Perfect for travel days and excursions, it has a large laptop sleeve and a trolley sleeve so you can slide on a luggage handle. In our testing, this backpack easily fit under an airplane seat. The key leashes are nice too, so you can quickly find your house keys at the end of a chaotic family trip. We also loved the small storage bags this comes with, including a large zippered one that can hold dirty clothes, a shoe bag, and a small mesh pouch that can stash cash or your health insurance card—anything you want to be able to fish out in a hurry.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: "I used the Indi for years, including for trips to Disney World, and I really liked how much I could comfortably carry," said Lexie Sachs, executive director of strategy & operations. Other testers especially loved that the Indi didn’t look like a classic diaper bag, noting its stylish, comfortable, and versatile design. "I fit anything and everything into this diaper bag, with room to spare, and I didn't feel like I was lugging around a monstrosity," one mom told us, and we agree.

But we also agree with tester complaints that the detachable neoprene bottle sleeve is not as effective for keeping a bottle cool as the insulated pockets that come with other diaper bags. Insulated pockets add weight, but they work better. Other testers wished that the bottle holder wasn't detachable, and complained that they've had bottles move around and spill.

Quick Change Kit Bag

Pros

  • Compact and lightweight for quick outings
  • Main compartment has a zippered closure to keep items secure
  • Magnetic top flap provides quick access to wipes and other essentials
  • Available in cute prints
  • Convenient alternative to carrying a full-size diaper bag

Cons

  • Smaller capacity than traditional diaper bags
  • Wristlet is on the small side

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: This is quite possibly the cutest diaper bag I've owned, and it's the one that I now permanently keep inside my stroller. Another 2026 GH Parenting Awards winner, it's the perfect size for squeezing in everything you need, from the included changing pad to a few diapers, diaper cream, and wipes. I especially like that the main compartment has a zippered closure so everything stays secure inside when we're on the go, though the magnetic top flap is also handy for storing items you want to access quickly, like napkins or wipes.

I also like how I'm not embarrassed to carry it around with me, like when we're leaving our stroller behind to visit a museum or eat at a restaurant. Designed in fun prints, the bag's exterior nylon material feels durable and, according to the brand, is water-resistant.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: Consumer testers agreed and said that they loved the Storq Quick Change Kit Bag for its compact design that can hold the essentials. One mom loved that it combines her tote bag and changing pad into "one small, portable item that I can easily grab and go." It also offers enough room to slip in a few extra items like a wallet or pacifier, according to our testers, though it is definitely on the smaller side compared to other diaper bags. It's "something that a mama would gladly carry around," said one parent, while others appreciated the "high quality, thick, and sturdy" material. Some wished, though, that the wristlet was larger or had a strap to make carrying it easier.

Featherlight Diaper Backpack
Credit: Away

Pros

  • Extremely lightweight at just 1.5 pounds
  • Stylish design that doesn’t look like a traditional diaper bag
  • Surprisingly spacious without feeling bulky
  • Plenty of compartments for staying organized, including four bottle holders

Cons

  • Bottle holders are not insulated

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: One of Good Housekeeping's best luggage brands, Away also makes backpacks, and this is one of our favorites. At only 1.5 pounds, it's extremely lightweight and convenient for all sorts of outings (you can attach it to your stroller with the provided clips). It has a trolley sleeve for travel, five zippered pockets (including clear, wipeable ones), and four bottle holders (though they aren't insulated). There's also an included diaper caddy and changing pad, which has two pockets for both your diapers and wipes and a handle to quickly pull it out.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: I use this backpack daily, and absolutely love how it doesn't look like a diaper backpack. It features a laptop sleeve that's easy to access and super handy when I'm commuting to the office, as well as tons of compartments that help me stay organized. I also really appreciate that I can either bring the changing pad with me when I need it or leave it behind when I don't.

Compared to other diaper backpacks I've tested, this is one of the lightest and least bulky, yet you'd be surprised how much you're able to squeeze inside. When traveling, it comfortably held the changing pad plus caddy, over-ear headphones, extra clothing for both me and my daughter, my laptop, games and toys, and an adult puff jacket.

Pros

  • Extra-large capacity for carrying all of your baby essentials
  • Comfortable to carry despite its large size
  • Detachable front pouch provides quick access
  • Fully zippered insulated compartment
  • Built-in fold-out changing station

Cons

  • May be too large or bulky for some parents
  • Built-in changing pad cannot be removed

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: This backpack from Béis is big and definitely one we would recommend for anyone who wants to carry all baby essentials in one place (or you're a notorious overpacker like myself). A past Good Housekeeping Parenting Awards winner, it features a front pouch that can separate from the main bag, a wipes holder, and a fully zippered insulated compartment. What's unique about it is the fold-out changing station: The changing pad is essentially built into the backpack, so you'll never lose it.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: Earning high scores across the board in our tests, this backpack stood out for its comfortable design and impressive capacity. "I love how much interior capacity this diaper bag has. It’s huge!" said one parent. Others appreciated the insulated compartment as well as the detachable pocket. "This little compartment makes it so easy to quickly grab wipes when you're on the go!” said one mom.

One tester noted, however, that the bag can be "intimidatingly large at first," and in my personal experience testing it, I agree. While I appreciate the built-in changing pad, I sometimes wished I could separate it from the backpack to wipe it clean or more easily use it for stroller changes.

Best for Easy Access

JuJuBe Classic Diaper Backpack

Pros

  • Unzips nearly all the way around for easy access to contents
  • 15 pockets offer plenty of organization
  • Two insulated bottle pockets
  • Spacious interior without sacrificing organization
  • Comfortable to carry, according to testers

Cons

  • Full-zip design requires more room to open completely

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: Unlike many diaper backpacks, this one unzips nearly all the way around, giving you a clear view of what’s inside so you don’t have to dig through the entire bag to find what you need. A previous GH Parenting Awardswinner, it impressed our pros with its thoughtful organization: There are 15 pockets in total, including two insulated bottle pockets, a quick-access phone pocket, and plenty of spots for stashing other essentials.

It’s also well-equipped for everyday outings and travel, with a laptop sleeve, trolley sleeve, cushioned changing pad, and removable stroller straps. We especially like the sleek design and metal hardware, which give it a more polished look than your typical diaper bag. Another bonus for inevitable spills and messes: The entire backpack is machine washable, according to the brand.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: “It helped me keep everything so well organized,” said one tester. “Especially with the see-through mesh, so I was able to see everything I had packed.” Most testers claimed that they liked using the JuJuBe more than previous backpacks they've owned, finding it more comfortable to carry around and more spacious. They also liked being able to fully unzip the main compartment, with one mom saying, it "allowed for much easier access to my items, and I did not have to do a whole lot of digging." That said, you'll need more room to open it completely up.

Pros

  • Spacious interior with plenty of pockets and zippers for organization
  • Charitable brand with give-back programs
  • Padded, comfortable straps for carrying
  • Minimalist, stylish, and unisex design

Cons

  • Thin changing pad

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: Minimalist from the outside, you wouldn't guess this is a diaper bag that boasts a spacious interior with mesh pockets and an insulated bottle pocket, plus an included changing pad. The back features a luggage sleeve (also called a trolley sleeve) so you can slip this securely over the handle of carry-on luggage, while a zippered outside pocket on the trolley sleeve can fit a large phone.

Available in five colors, the bag can be monogrammed or personalized with a name, symbol, or patch to mark it as yours. If we have one complaint, it's that the changing pad is thin, with no cushioning.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: The Lorimer was a home run with our consumer testers. In fact, it earned perfect scores in every single category and was recognized as a past Good Housekeeping Parenting Award winner. "I love the amount of space it has. I used it while traveling and was able to fit all my essentials," one parent told us. "The organization is great! And it is comfortable on my shoulders."

Executive Director of Strategy & Operations Lexie Sachs, who has a degree in fiber science, reviewed this bag in the Lab and said, "I was impressed by all of the places to pack. There are two main compartments with tons of pockets in each, plus outside pockets." We counted 10 pockets altogether, plus the two main compartments. One interior pocket has a sleeve for a 15-inch laptop. "I also loved how much padding it has for comfort. The fabric is smooth nylon, which is among the best materials you can choose for a backpack for its strength and water resistance," said Sachs.

"My husband carries this around without being embarrassed," said Good Housekeeping's Senior Parenting and Relationships Editor Marisa LaScala. "You can also use it like a regular backpack once the diaper stage is over." We are also fans of how this brand gives back to kids.

CALPAK Diaper Backpack

Pros

  • Weighs less than 2 pounds
  • Well-cushioned straps
  • Deep side pockets for baby bottles or water bottles
  • Magnetic top flap for a smooth look

Cons

  • No changing pad included

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: Our Lab pros were wowed that this large backpack diaper bag is so lightweight—less than 2 pounds! The bag has several baby-friendly features, such as insulated bottle pockets and eight interior pockets, two of which are mesh and zippered. A laptop fits inside the zippered sleeve on the back, and there's also a trolley sleeve so it can slide over a suitcase handle.

A magnetic flap fits over the one large, zippered compartment, giving this a streamlined, hardware-free look. There's just one thing that gives us pause, and that is that CALPAK did not include a changing pad. You'll just have to provide your own changing mat, and the brand's stroller straps and accessories are sold separately.

For more fun colors (like a gorgeous red), you can head to Calpak's website.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: This backpack also earned a Good Housekeeping Parenting Award, thanks to great feedback from testers. "We have used another backpack diaper bag from Amazon, and we prefer this one. It is so much more comfortable to carry with the cushioned straps," a tester told us. That tester liked the deep, insulated bottle sleeves on the sides of the bag, also good for water bottles. Another tester, who was toting bottles of breastmilk, said they didn't trust the pockets to keep the milk cold enough. And while some testers liked the magnetic flap and found it easy to open (especially when holding a baby), others were not as fond of it and complained that it wouldn't stay closed.

Everyday Diaper Backpack

Pros

  • Extra padding on the back
  • Brightly colored liner helps you find objects inside
  • Magnetic clasp instead of a zipper
  • Opens extra wide for packing and unpacking

Cons

  • No stroller hooks

✔️ WHY WE LOVE IT: There's nothing babyish about this piece of baby gear. There are tons of pockets, including a laptop pocket and an insulated bottle pocket that's reachable from the outside and larger than most. It comes with two large zippered pouches, each with a clear side, to make it obvious where everything is.

It's one of the largest picks on our list and the only one with extra padding on the back rather than a back pocket, stroller hooks, or a bulky trolley sleeve (though it does feature a slim luggage strap).

The one main compartment can be zipped open wide when you're ready to load up for the day or unpack when you're back from your outing. The key leash is in a pocket at the very top, which also fits a large phone. We'd recommend buying a set of stroller hooks if you want this to hang on the back of your stroller.

✔️ WHAT TESTERS SAY: This modern-looking one appealed to dads especially. "It's a great style for men and women, and doesn't look like an obvious diaper bag," one tester told us. "It opens very easily with a magnetic clasp, which is great for quickly grabbing items. The bright blue lining inside is great for finding things quickly," another tester said.

More diaper backpacks we love

black leather backpack with front zipper pocket and handle.
Beis

Aside from our picks above, these get a lot of love from parents and our Lab pros, and may have something special that you are looking for:

• Faux leather pick: If you're looking for luxe for less, our Lab pros are longtime fans of the Freshly Picked Mini Classic Diaper Bag Backpack, which comes in eight shades of faux leather. For slightly more, we also recommend the faux leather Itzy Ritzy Eras Diaper Bag Backpack, which holds its shape nicely, giving this bag a slimmer silhouette than others even though it still holds a lot.

• Trendy bag: Celebrity luggage brand Béis introduced The Backpack Diaper Bag that's made of durable nylon with faux-leather trim and sold in black. A silicone teething ring is included—a cute touch.

• Lululemon choice: If you're already a fan of the brand's other bags, like the popular Everywhere Belt Bag, you'll probably love the New Parent Backpack made of recycled nylon.

• Affordable alternative: Under $50, the BabbleRoo Diaper Bag Backpack is just a fraction of the price of some higher-end diaper bags, and features a whopping 18 pockets, three compartments (including an insulated compartment that can fit up to three baby bottles), a changing pad, and a detachable pacifier case. It's available in traditional baby girl colors, traditional baby boy colors, and plenty of unisex and grown-up options.

How we test backpack diaper bags

double line break

We've tested dozens of diaper bags over the past five years in our Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab. We research materials, tally up all the pockets and accessories, and take the bags out for real-life use. We've hauled backpack diaper bags to theme parks and beaches, on planes and buses, and, of course, into many a public restroom to see how they function under all types of circumstances.

We also send diaper bags to families nationwide and have them report back on all the pros and cons, and also ask them to compare a test bag with any diaper-bag brands they have used before. Much of our research supports our annual Parenting Awards and our Family Travel Awards.

What to consider when shopping for a backpack diaper bag

a lab tester pulls the changing pad out of the back of an itzy ritzy backpack diaper bag, part of a good housekeeping list of the best backpack diaper bags
Jessica Hartshorn

Any backpack can serve as your diaper bag. But what makes a backpack an official "backpack diaper bag" is that it usually includes a changing pad so you can change your baby's diaper on the go. Here are other things to consider when looking for the best backpack for hauling your baby's stuff:

✔️ Strap comfort and fit: You've probably worn a regular backpack before and know that its comfort is maybe more important than anything else. In our testing, we've found that you generally get what you pay for: The more expensive brands tend to have the most comfortable, padded straps.

✔️ Smart interior space: Testers complain if a diaper bag ends up being a big black hole for their baby goods, with everything jumbled together. Multiple compartments, many pockets including see-through mesh ones, and additional accessory bags can all help bring order to the chaos.

✔️ Stroller hooks: If a backpack diaper bag doesn't have these integrated in or doesn't include them as a separate accessory, you'll want to buy them. OXO Tot stroller hooks are well-reviewed.

✔️ Accessories: These days, many of the top backpack diaper bags come with an integrated trolley sleeve (so the bag fits over the extended handle of a suitcase), a laptop sleeve, and a zippered compartment on the outside for your phone. But we also love extra pouches for the inside, a key leash, and a pacifier holder. All of those can be nice to have on an everyday basis.
