Pros
Tracks weight, body fat, and more
Responsive with an easy-to-read display
Monitors up to 8 profiles
Extremely accurate weight measurements
Cons
More features than most people will use if you only want basic weight tracking
This Withings smart scale earned our Best Overall spot for its strong performance in Lab tests, easy-to-read display and ability to track far more than weight alone. It’s an especially good pick for anyone who wants a fuller picture of their body composition over time, since it connects to your phone via Wi-Fi and tracks metrics including weight, total body fat, water percentage, bone mass and muscle mass. In our testing, it was a top performer for accuracy, and its responsive display made measurements easy to read at a glance.
Our experts also found the scale comfortable to use for both larger and petite figures, and it can recognize up to eight user profiles, making it practical for households where several people want to track their stats separately. Withings has also performed well in previous Good Housekeeping Institute evaluations, giving us added confidence in the brand.
Setup takes a little more effort than it does with a basic digital scale since you’ll need to connect it to Wi-Fi, but the payoff is convenient automatic syncing. Your measurements are organized in the intuitive Withings app, where you can view trends and keep tabs on your health data over time. Some extras, such as the on-scale weather display, felt less essential to our test panel, but they don’t detract from what this scale does particularly well: deliver accurate measurements and useful health insights in one polished package.
| Dimensions | 12.8" x 12.8" x 0.9" |
| Weight capacity | 396 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | 8 |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Simple, chic aesthetic
Easy-to-read display
Low-battery indicator feature
Cons
Reads only weight
Ideal for anyone who wants a straightforward user experience, this scale offers a simple, elegant design. Frequent users will appreciate its auto-off and low-battery indicator features. With high-tempered clear glass and a chrome finish base, this scale looks great in any bathroom.
In Lab tests, our pros found the scale’s display responsive and easy to read, though they wish it featured a backlight for even more clarity. It wasn’t the most accurate of the bunch, but its sleek, good looks made it a favorite among our tech analysts, even though it only reads weight.
| Dimensions | 11.75" x 12.75" x 1.25" |
| Weight capacity | 400 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | 1 |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | No |

Pros
Large color display and substantial handle give it a premium feel
Unlimited profiles with automatic user recognition
Wi-Fi automatically syncs measurements to the VeSync app
Cons
Initial weight readings ran a pound heavy in our evaluation before becoming consistent with the other scales
The Etekcity 8-Electrode Body Composition Scale immediately feels like a step up from a typical smart scale. We liked its upscale appearance, substantial handle, and large 3.5-inch color display, which makes measurements easy to see without immediately reaching for your phone. It also registered our weight very quickly.
Beyond its polished hardware, the Etekcity is particularly well suited to households with several users. It supports unlimited profiles with automatic user recognition, and Wi-Fi connectivity allows measurements to sync to the VeSync app after initial setup without keeping your phone nearby. Guest Mode is another useful addition when someone wants to weigh themselves without creating a profile.
It uses sensors throughout the scale to measure your body in greater detail, providing more than 50 insights into body composition. We noticed our initial weight readings were a few pounds heavier than expected; however, subsequent measurements aligned with the other scales we evaluated. At $170, it packs a lot of advanced tracking features into a scale that looks and feels more premium than its price suggests.
| Dimensions | 12.6 x 12.6 x 1.1 in. |
| Weight Capacity | 400 lbs |
| Number of profiles | Unlimited |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Precise measurements
Weighs up to 440 lbs
Large, easy-to-read display
Wide platform size
Cons
Reads only weight
This simple-to-use scale provides precise weight measurements on a large, easy-to-read display and performed well in Lab tests. “If you’re looking for a no-frills scale that will do a solid job measuring body weight, this one is worth a look, especially given the superb price,” said former GH Institute Chief Technologist Rachel Rothman.
When reviewing this model in the Tech & Engineering Lab, our pros loved its oversized platform and found the 3.6-inch by 2-inch LCD screen easy to see from a distance. We liked that it responds almost instantly—no need to tap and then step on. It also has the best weight range of our picks, with a 440-pound capacity. And with a sturdy build, it should last you ages.
| Dimensions | 16.7" x 13" x 1.8" |
| Weight capacity | 440 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | 1 |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | No |

Pros
Affordable
Easy-to-read display
App tracks weight and other health-related stats
Cons
Weight measurements varied slightly from premium scales
This smart scale offers great value for the price. But just because it’s super affordable doesn’t mean it skips extra features like connectivity to the Renpho Health app, where you can track your weight (and 12 other stats).
At 11 inches long, the scale has a compact footprint, which makes it a great fit for cramped bathrooms and other small spaces. The red number display was easy to read from a distance. When we stepped on the scale, it woke up immediately. Our experts warn that the weight measurements were slightly different than more premium picks, though fluctuations were minimal.
| Dimensions | 11" x 11" x 1" |
| Weight capacity | 396 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | Unlimited |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Easy-to-read, color display
Unlimited user profiles
Features extras like baby mode
Cons
Slight lag when it turns on
Before you hop on this smart scale, you’ll first have to connect it to Wi-Fi and charge it via USB-C. Then step on the glass for your weight and 13 other measurements, which you can review in the VeSync app. Its bright, colorful display makes readings easy to see.
What's even better about this scale is that it'll recognize your profile just by stepping on it. It's priced higher than some others, but you'll also get features like a pregnancy mode you can access through the app and a baby mode for tracking kids' growth.
This scale was a top performer in Lab tests, providing accurate weight measurements compared to our calibrated Lab scale. Our pros did notice that it takes a few seconds to turn on and isn’t quite as responsive as other models we tested, but the easy-to-read color display makes up for it. We also love how easy it is to switch among profiles in the app.
| Dimensions | 11.8" x 11.8" x 1.1" |
| Weight capacity | 400 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | Unlimited |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Holds up to 16 profiles
Highly accurate in Lab tests
Syncs with Garmin Connect via Wi-Fi
Color display
Cons
Slow to turn on
Up to 16 people can store their own profiles on this smart scale, making it ideal for big families or college students living with many roommates. The scale instantly recognizes users when they step on it, and it can send personal data to their profile in Garmin’s app, Garmin Connect, via the scale’s built-in Wi-Fi. Once you step on it, it’ll provide tons of body analysis features, including measurements for weight, weight trend, body fat percentage, BMI, skeletal muscle mass, and more.
According to our Lab tests, this scale is highly accurate. One product analyst told us that she loved how easy it is to read the color display and she “really enjoys seeing extra info like the time, date, and weather forecast without having to open up the app.” Other testers, however, noted that they wish the scale turned on a bit faster.
| Dimensions | 12.2" x 12.6" x 1.1" |
| Weight capacity | 400 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | 16 |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Great value
Compact size
Unlimited number of profiles
Cons
Display only shows weight; other metrics are viewed in the app.
Some of our product analysts have been using this smart scale for years and love it. It quickly connects to the FITINDEX app, where you can track up to 13 body-analysis measurements like weight, body fat ratio, muscle mass, and more. Its compact footprint also fits most small bathrooms.
We love that, for less than half the price of other premium scales, it offers great value and lets you store an unlimited number of profiles, making it a great choice for the family. We do wish the scale showed more than weight, as you need to access the app to see any body composition measurements.
| Dimensions | 10.2" x 10.2" x 0.96" |
| Weight capacity | 396 lbs |
| Max number of stored profiles | Unlimited |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Voice guidance walks you through measurements and can be switched off
Tracks 50+ body composition metrics
App makes it easy to follow measurements over time
Cons
Smaller display than competing premium models
Handle feels flimsier than others we evaluated
The Renpho MorphoScan Nova stands out from other body composition scales for its voice guidance, which walks you through the measurement process and can be turned on or off. We found the prompts especially helpful as we got used to the scale’s retractable handle and positioned ourselves correctly for a full-body reading.
Eight electrodes and dual-frequency BIA measure five areas of the body and provide more than 50 metrics, including body fat, muscle mass, and visceral fat. Results sync to the Renpho Health app, where it’s much easier to dig into all that data and track changes over time.
There are a few compromises. The display is smaller than on some other premium body composition scales we tried, so you’ll likely spend more time looking at results in the app. We also found the retractable handle to be the flimsiest of the models we evaluated. Still, the voice guidance makes the Nova unusually approachable for such a data-heavy scale, especially if you want help getting through each measurement without constantly referring to your phone.
| Dimensions | 12.2" x 12.2" x 1.1" |
| Weight capacity | 400 lbs |
| Number of profiles | Unlimited |
| Bluetooth or app connectivity | Yes |

Pros
Tracks more than 60 health and body composition metrics
Detailed measurements are easy to follow in the Withings app
Daily and weekly scans provide different levels of health tracking
Cons
Initial setup and updates can take some time
As digital scales have moved into body composition, the new BodyScan 2 from Withings has expanded its measurements even further by tracking over 60 biomarkers, with a focus on longevity.
We found the scale takes a bit of time to set up and update, but once it's up and running and synced to the Withings app, you get a full-featured health tracker that rivals what you’d find in a gym. Its retractable handle helps measure fat and muscle distribution across six areas of the body, while additional sensors track metrics such as visceral fat, vascular age, blood oxygen, and heart rate. It can even check your heart rhythm and alert you to signs of an irregular heartbeat.
You don’t have to run the full battery of measurements every morning. A customizable Daily Scan takes about 30 seconds, while the more comprehensive Longevity Scan is designed to be completed once a week and takes about two minutes. I also just use it to quickly check and track weight.
At $600, this is a major investment for a bathroom scale. But if you enjoy digging into health data and tracking changes over time, few scales offer this level of detail. Just remember that many of these measurements are better for tracking trends than for replacing advice or testing from your health care provider.

How we test bathroom scales

Engineers and product analysts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Tech & Engineering Lab have tested digital bathroom scales for years. In our most recent evaluation, our experts tested more than a dozen scales. To assess performance, we compared each scale's readings with measurements from our calibrated Lab scale to evaluate both accuracy and precision.
Because most people use a bathroom scale regularly, we also evaluated everyday usability, including platform size, display readability, how quickly the scale powers on and off, and how easy it is to set up and enter personal information, such as age and gender. For models with smart capabilities, we assessed features like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, app setup, and how easy it is to switch between user profiles.
What to look for when shopping for the best bathroom scale

✔️ Type: Analog scales use mechanical springs to measure weight, while digital scales rely on built-in sensors. A subset of digital scales is smart scales, which use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity to upload data to your smartphone or computer and track health changes over time. There’s no single right type of scale, though our pros prefer digital or smart scales for their ease of use and accuracy.
✔️ Weight capacity: Most bathroom scales have a weight capacity of up to 400 pounds, give or take. If you prefer a higher capacity, double-check the maximum weight before buying.
✔️ Ease of use: A bathroom scale should not only be easy to set up, but also feature a platform with ample room to stand. It should respond quickly and display your weight or other measurements clearly. Also consider the display size and whether the numbers are large and bright so you can read your results easily.
✔️ Metrics tracking: The bathroom scale you ultimately choose will depend on your fitness and weight-tracking goals and how you intend to use the scale. Beyond simply providing weight, some of our top smart scales also measure body fat percentage, metabolic rate, and bone and muscle mass, all of which can help you track progress over time when used properly.
✔️ Connectivity: Some smart bathroom scales can sync to an app on your smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to track your health metrics. If you’re training for a race or looking to improve athletic performance, the tracking features of a smart digital scale might be worth it. But connectivity often costs more and makes the experience more complex, so if your only goal is to check your weight once a week, consider spending less on a basic bathroom scale that does its job accurately and reliably.
What is the most accurate type of bathroom scale?

All things being equal, digital scales tend to be more accurate than analog ones. They can also measure more than just weight, such as bone and muscle mass and hydration.
With any scale, accuracy depends on proper usage. Always place the scale on a hard, flat surface (bathroom floors are ideal). It’s a good idea to calibrate your scale regularly, especially if you move it around a lot; the process usually involves stepping on and off the scale and pressing a special calibration button.
“Your weight can naturally fluctuate from day to day based on hydration, sodium intake, digestion, hormones, and even when you last ate,” says registered dietitian Stefani Sassos, the director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition & Fitness Lab. “That’s why it’s more helpful to look at trends over time rather than focusing on any single weigh-in. Ideally, try to weigh yourself under similar conditions each time, such as at the same time of day and before eating or drinking, so you’re getting a more consistent picture of your weight.”
When it comes to body composition measurements, don't rely too heavily on a scale at all: These metrics are often based in part on calculations, as opposed to body composition scans. “If you want to know your actual body fat, find a certified personal trainer or another professional who knows how to take the measurement using the proper equipment,” said Walt Thompson, former president at the American College of Sports Medicine.
