If you've got some MorningStar Farms products in your freezer, it's time to pull them out and check them against this critical new recall.
On June 18 MorningStar Farms announced a voluntary recall of two of its plant-based products due to possible plastic pieces making their way into the food, according to a release by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Here's everything you need to know, and what to do if your favorite frozen meat alternatives are affected.
What, exactly, is being recalled?
According to the FDA announcement, there are two MorningStar Farms products affected by this recall. They include:
- MorningStar Farms Buffalo Chik'n Nuggets (10.5 oz)
- MorningStar Farms Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties (8 oz)
The recall applies to products sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. However, it's critical to note that no other MorningStar Farms products are affected by this recall.
How do I know if my product is affected?
As with all recalls, you can check the Universal Product Code (UPC) and the "Better if Used Before" date printed on your package.
- The recalled Buffalo Chik'n Nuggets carry UPC 000 28989 10110 5 and have a "Better if Used Before" date of July 7 or July 8, 2027.
- The recalled Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties carry UPC 000 28989 10094 8 and have a "Better if Used Before" date of July 5, July 6, or July 7, 2027.
Why are these MorningStar Farms products being recalled?
MorningStar Farms is recalling both products due to the possible presence of plastic pieces in the food. However, the brand did not specify what kind of plastic is in the food, nor where it came from. Regardless, the pieces can present a health hazard.
What should I do if I have these in my freezer?
The FDA made it clear in its recall announcement that consumers should not eat either of the recalled products. Instead, it advised that you discard them immediately and contact MorningStar Farms for a full refund. You can reach the company's Consumer Affairs department Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, by calling 800-962-0120 or texting 877-453-5837.
