I have done a lot of things for this job. I’ve spun Beyblades. I’ve learned how to play the Pokémon Trading Card Game. I’ve built LEGO sets and chased the trends of Labubu, Sonny Angel, and Hacky Sacks. But one of the best assignments I’ve ever gotten was to coax a Hatchin’ Yoshi out of its shell. (Yoshi is still on my desk.)
For those not in the know, the Hatchin’ Yoshi came out to coincide with The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie—a movie that made me long to leave New York behind and go back to Super Nintendo World. The movie also made Yoshi the breakout star, every bit as adorable as fans hoped. (He's voiced by Donald Glover, whose entire performance consists of hilariously saying, "Yoshi!")
In toy form, Yoshi starts inside the egg, which rocks back and forth and makes sounds when it's ready to hatch. Then, he emerges and becomes an interactive toy, reacting to sound and touch.
Since the movie came out, though, the toy has been popular, and it’s gone out of stock multiple times. I’m pleased to say that now the Hatchin’ Yoshi is not only in stock at Walmart, but it’s the lowest price I’ve ever seen it. It’s currently $30, which is 45% off the usual price.
The Good Housekeeping Institute toy team hasn't had a chance to test it with kids yet, but we did get a firsthand look both at Toy Fair and in our office. There, I could see how the egg had a lot of personality before the hatch, bopping around in anticipation of the big launch. After the hatch, too, Yoshi was as cute as he is in the games.
Once the egg is broken, though, it can’t be reconstituted. It is a one-time hatch. Once the shards of shell are all removed, the egg acts like a little nest for Yoshi to sit in, so there is continued play value for the egg. But make sure all interested parties are around for the big reveal, because it only happens once per Hatchin’ Yoshi. Also good to know: The toy is for kids ages 4 and up and requires three AA batteries.
Of course, for kids (or adults!) in their Super Mario Bros. era, the Hatchin' Yoshi isn't the only gift out there. (The movie itself is available on VOD, and it’s $20 on Prime Video right now.) There's a lot of good loot out there to collect, with no stop at a Toad's House necessary.
No matter which you choose, they’ll give your gift-giving skills a 1-Up!
