If there are two things I know about preschoolers, it's that they love the PAW Patrol, and they adore dinosaurs. So it only makes sense that, after tackling super heroes with PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, Ryder and his team of pups would set their sites on the prehistoric for the next film.
PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie is the next film in the PAW Patrol franchise. In it, the crew is caught in a storm that brings them to an island where dinosaurs still roam. The dastardly Mayor Humdinger wants to exploit the island for its natural resources, but in doing so he accidentally causes a dormant volcano to erupt. It's up to the PAW Patrol—and their new friend Rex—to go on a series of dino rescues.
That all sounds like fun and games—literally. I was able to get a sneak peek at the new line of PAW Patrol toys that are coming out in the wake of the film. Believe me, “humdinger” doesn't even begin to describe it. Now that the toys are out, everyone can get a chance to see what I mean.
The one that I'm personally most excited about it is the Megasaurus Dino Vehicle. It starts out looking like a regular Rocky recycling truck, but there's a twist: When you press a button, a two-foot-tall dino inflates out of the back of the truck! The Brachiosaurus can be separated from the truck and it stays inflated. When playtime is over, it can be deflated and stored back in the truck.
As the parent of a kid who loves to collect plush—only to have no where to put them all—I truly appreciate how collapsible the dinosaur is. I had a chance to check it out in action during Toy Fair; it really is the best of both worlds in that a kid can get a substantial dinosaur to play with, while adults don't have to worry about where to put a two-foot Brachiosaurus when it's not being played with.
Of course, whenever there's a new wave of PAW Patrol toys, the new HQ is always a highlight. This one is no exception: The Dino Mobile HQ is outfitted with green plates that look like the back of a Stegosaurus. But when it's time for the pups to be on a roll, the lookout tower folds down and the HQ transforms into a vehicle.
The Dino Mobile HQ has lights and sounds, and also comes with a Chase figure, his vehicle, and a ramp launcher.
And then, in terms of play sets, there are a couple more that incorporate the movie's prehistoric landscape. The first is the Super Lava Blast Play Set, which offers a lot of dramatic action: Press a TNT detonator on top of the volcano, and it triggers an eruption with lights and sounds. (Marshall can take the safe, hidden path behind a waterfall.)
Or, for less explosive fun, there's the Lift & Race Dino Play Set. With this one, another Brachiosaurus—specifically its long neck—acts as an on-ramp for Marshall's vehicle. When he's at the top, click a button and watch the pup zoom down the track again.
Then there are the new toys you'd expect every time there's a new PAW Patrol on the horizon. There are Dino-Themed Vehicles for all of the pups that look like they could've been driven straight out of Jurassic Park; each one comes with a pup and a little dinosaur figure. There are also GUND Movie Plushes of all of their favorites, either in a six-inch version for or a nine-inch version for, plus a ten-inch GUND Deluxe Marshall Plush that makes five different sounds when you squeeze him, including dinosaur noises.
Finally, there's the Melissa & Doug Dino Adventure Role Play Set, a 16-piece play set that comes with different "missions" for kids to do. It's a mix of items that can be used for imaginative play, like a pup pack, a clip-on pup badge, a whistle, and a telescope, plus activities like search-and-finds and Water Wow pages.
PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie will be in theaters August 14.
