We love a practical pair of sneakers just as much as anyone, but if you want to take your outfits to the next level, you’re going to need to step outside your comfort zone. Our editors have been keeping our finger on the pulse of the season’s hottest footwear trends, which are all about experimental silhouettes (like sculptural wedges or “sneakerinas”) and personal touches like DIY charm details.
With the help of Amanda Constantine, home and apparel reviews analyst at the GH Institute Textiles Lab, I’ve created a guide to the hottest shoe trends of spring 2026—including the best pairs to shop. As always, we’ve made sure to highlight top-tested brands from the Good Housekeeping Institute, like Skechers, Franco Sarto, and Adidas.
The ballet sneaker
“Ballet sneakers are a continuation from last season that’s only growing stronger,” Constantine says. “The low-profile sneakers combine the comfort of an active shoe with the chic, slim look of a ballet flat. They’re casual but more elevated than a pair of trainers.” Vivaia’s Cristina Sneakerina shoes are by far the most popular—even supermodel Bella Hadid has a pair—and they’re a top-tested pick among GH editors.
The boat shoe
Boat shoes are a mainstay in preppy New England style—and now they’re going mainstream. To bring the style into 2026, we’re leaning into playful details like charms, funky laces, and lug soles. Abercrombie & Fitch’s Sperry collaboration comes pre-decked out with nautical beads, but you can also add your own decorations to any pair for a pop of personality.
The Mary Jane flat
“After years of chunky shoes, flats have taken over,” Constantine notes. “For added interest, brands are incorporating details like buckles, ties, and laces, making them more exciting for this season.” Amazon Essentials’ velvet pair are an affordable entry point, while Franco Sarto’s flats are celebrity-approved—Katie Holmes was spotted in this exact chocolate-brown pair.
The modern wedge
Another nostalgic style that’s trending once again this spring? Wedge sandals, but with a modern twist. Instead of the bohemian espadrilles and cork heels we’re used to seeing, this season’s wedges are sleek and sculptural, with a curved silhouette that adds intrigue to any outfit. These minimalist Staud wedges are surprisingly office-friendly, while this flip-flop-inspired pair from Tony Bianco will become a staple in your vacation wardrobe.
The raffia weave
Raffia weaves are a more sophisticated alternative to the mesh shoes that were trending last year, according to Constantine. The beachy style transitions seamlessly from spring to summer, and they’re available in a variety of flat and heeled silhouettes. Neutral shoes—like these chocolate brown Margaux flats—are the easiest to style, but these red Birdies shoes add a fun pop of color.
The jelly sandal
This season’s best shoe trends don’t take themselves too seriously, which is why we’re delighted to see a ‘90s relic making a comeback: the jelly sandal. These nostalgic shoes are typically made from waterproof PVC and come in a rainbow of funky colors, from acid green to neon pink. These fisherman sandals from Melissa are a standout— according to the brand, they’re Tutti Frutti-scented (yes, really!).
