If you couldn’t already tell, Kate Middleton is one of our biggest fashion inspos here at GH. We’re scanning photos every day, taking notes on everything from her accessories all the way down to her shoe choices.
I was looking through last year’s photo library when one of Kate’s pieces stopped me in my tracks. It was a long and lovely tartan coat—monochrome blue and structured. Kate was out on a royal visit to Scotland when she wore it, but she just as well could’ve been headed to a holiday party or a winter event (and the coat would’ve worked for all three).
It looked like the kind of versatile piece you could wear all winter long, and I desperately wanted it.
Google quickly told me that wasn’t possible, as I discovered that the coat was a completely custom-made piece. Kate actually helped design it, closely collaborating with her longtime stylist, Chris Kerr, a bespoke tailor in London.
Naturally, I started searching for lookalikes. While Kate’s is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, I found similar alternatives that exude the same timeless elegance. They may not all share the same ankle length and vibrant blue hue, but they’re a great start. Take a look at my favorites from Amazon, Nordstrom, Old Navy, and Boden.
Kate also showed that styling a statement piece is easier than you think. You could immediately tell she wore a black turtleneck underneath the coat—and the peek of fabric at the neckline added a polished layer to the look.
In other photos from that day, you can see the rest of Kate’s outfit, which included a chocolate fair-isle sweater, black tights, and a long black skirt that matched the length of her coat. She also wore sleek, high-heeled boots.
Kate has once again made a case for a classic, proving that a timeless tartan coat can feel just as fresh today as it does year after year.
