I never identified as a "gym-girl," but I think I've earned the title after realizing that I'm the toughest workout leggings critic. Leggings are a staple in my wardrobe (leggings over jeans everyday), but finding the right ones for workouts is a whole different challenge. My ideal pair needs to be comfortable, fully opaque, and stay put—no rolling down or bunching during a squat—while looking good enough to wear beyond the gym.
Our top picks:
Best Overall: Lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Tight
Best Value: Colorfulkoala High Waisted Workout Leggings 7/8 Length
Most Popular: IUGA High Waist Workout Pants
Best for Running: Under Armour HeatGear Pocketed Leggings
Most Comfortable: Lululemon Align Pant
As a fiber scientist and associate director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I’ve tested more than 30 leggings in-Lab—washing pairs five times to check if they'll shrink, stretching the fabric for two hours at a time to see if they'll bag out, and evaluating how quickly water drops evaporate on the material to calculate how they'll wick sweat. I’ve also worn each pair through all types of workouts, including reformer Pilates, weightlifting, long walks, yoga, and more, to make sure they’re truly “squat-proof.” On top of that, over 150 testers of varying body shapes and fitness routines weighed in on how each pair performed in real life. These are the workout leggings that came out on top.
Pros
Aced moisture management testing
A tester favorite
Stayed put with help of the hidden drawcord waistband
Cons
Some testers prefer a less compressive fit
Up to the challenge of your sweatiest high-impact workouts, these compressive Lululemon leggings offer support during strenuous, high-impact exercise like running or CrossFit. They proved to be durable too, showing minimal shrinkage after laundering and no pilling in our Lab evaluations. The fabric immediately wicked away moisture, so it will help keep you dry, and it was fully opaque in our tests, making this pair totally "squat proof."
They come in a wide variety of options including 23-, 25-, 28-, and 31-inch inseams and colors like blue, green, and brown. We recommend the version of these leggings with pockets if you love having your phone and essentials easily accessible (they cost more though).
WHAT TESTERS SAY: "These are my new favorite leggings," said one consumer tester, and many others echoed the sentiment. Testers loved the soft, smooth fabric that offers comfortable compression, although a few noted that they preferred a less compressive fit.
If I am heading to the gym, this is my go-to pair. Whether I'm lifting weights, jogging on the treadmill, or doing a core workout, the waistband stays put without digging in, thanks to the hidden drawcord. One of our consumer testers had a similar experience: "When I bent my body and moved around, the leggings stayed put."
I also like the flattering snug fit, which looks great in and out of the gym, and how the material wicks away sweat easily even during high-impact workouts.

Pros
Maintained its shape after stretch-recovery testing
Convenient side pockets to hold a phone or essentials
Outperformed styles quadruple the price
Cons
Not fully opaque
These affordable Colorfulkoala leggings outperformed other styles that sell for quadruple the price. The soft polyester/spandex fabric provides comfy compression, making this a great pick for low-impact workouts. The fabric bounced back to its original shape after being stretched in the Lab and remained in pristine condition workout after workout. The downsides are that this pair had lower moisture management scores and wasn't fully opaque, though on the upside, it does come in 30 color options.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: When I saw that these leggings were just $25, I was shocked—after all, I preferred wearing these leggings over many $100 pairs. They received the highest consumer score out of all the pairs we tested too. When the testers learned what the price was, every single one reported that they planned to buy more pairs. One tester even said, "I like them better than my other high-end, expensive workout leggings."
The wide waistband fit my waist perfectly without rolling down or slipping and the side pockets were super convenient for wearing on a neighborhood stroll or errand run. While the fabric wasn't fully opaque during deep squats, I found it was perfect for low-impact exercise, though one tester said she wore this pair for all types of exercise "from HIIT and lifting to yoga and Pilates." I did notice that the 25-inch inseam was a bit short on my tall frame.

Pros
Soft and opaque fabric
Available in 20 colors
Affordable
Cons
Not as high-waisted as other pairs
Best sellers on Amazon and cost only around $30? I had to try these IUGA leggings during my workouts to see if they really stacked up. Needless to say, I was impressed. For the price, this versatile pair is a great buy, plus they're available in 20 colors and are designed with two spacious side pockets. The fit is not too compressive, making them comfortable enough for lounging too.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: I found this pair to be fully opaque, which isn't very common when it comes to affordable leggings. Even when bending into yoga poses, they weren't the least bit see-through. They aren't as high-waisted as other leggings I've tested, so more of my stomach was exposed than I would have liked.

Pros
Wicks sweat quickly
Lightweight yet compressive
Stretchy for a good range of motion
Cons
Testers found them not as comfortable for everyday wear
These leggings are made of a super-smooth and stretchy fabric that quickly wicks moisture and reduces friction for exercise that involves a lot of sweat and movement. They're also more compressive than many other pairs, which can help with muscle fatigue. Plus, they have pockets that lie flat in case you need to carry anything with you.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: Under Armour leggings are always favorites in our tests, especially for their comfort, breathability, and durability. I especially liked wearing this pair of sleek leggings on runs, because the compressive fit helped support my legs. Since I only run shorter distances, I partnered with testers who regularly run five or more miles. One tester said, "They fit very well and stayed put during high-intensity exercise."
Because of the compressive fit, many testers said this pair wasn't as comfy to wear outside the gym. If you're going to be running in cold weather, we recommend the brand's ColdGear Leggings which are fleece-lined yet still breathable for your run.
| Available sizes | XS–XXL, 1X–3X |
| Material | 100% polyester |
| Length | Short (24 in.), Regular (26 in.), Tall (28 in.) |
Pros
Excellent fit on various body types
Soft and lightweight
Versatile for workouts and everyday wear
Cons
Pill more easily than other workout leggings
These are the type of yoga pants you can live in—they're comfortable enough to wear as loungewear yet they perform well when you need them to during workouts. The fabric is incredibly lightweight and smooth, and they have a versatile fit for a variety of body types that doesn't squeeze or roll at the waist.
They are known to pill a bit more than other workout leggings, so we suggest washing them inside out on the delicate cycle and letting them air dry to prevent that. Since they're more lightweight, they're best suited for low-impact exercise.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: I felt immediately confident as soon as I put this pair on, because the wide waistband is extremely flattering and laid flat with no digging in. Plus, the material is buttery soft, so it felt great wearing them all day long.
"These leggings are insanely soft," said one tester. "They have a lightweight feel that is cozy like a second skin. They didn't feel compressive or too snug yet they looked very flattering. I didn't want to take them off!"

Pros
Two spacious side pockets
Full coverage, high-waist fit
Durable material that's moisture-wicking and pill-resistant
Cons
Stretched out a bit during stretch recovery tests
Studio loyalists will appreciate the compressive, high-waist fit of this Athleta pair. Optimal for yoga, Pilates, and barre classes, the brand's signature Powervita nylon/Lycra fabric gives you that perfect combination of soft and smooth.
After our wash test, the leggings still looked good as new and we didn't noticed any changes in appearance except for slight shrinkage. The fabric proved to be pill-resistant and moisture-wicking too, but it stretched out a bit during stretch recovery tests.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: I regularly wear this pair to yoga classes because the soft material doesn't get too sweaty even in hot yoga studios. There are two spacious side pockets to hold my phone and wallet so I don't have to worry about carrying a bag.
All testers agreed that this pair is "extremely flattering" and "supportive while still being comfortable," offering great coverage for group fitness classes.

Pros
Variety of color options
Seamless design
Ribbed waistband to help it stay put
Cons
Only one length that may be too long on shorter frames
Designed specifically for lifting, Gymshark's Adapt collection features these seamless leggings with a high-waisted, ribbed waistband that'll stay up. Without a front crotch seam like most leggings, this pair helps prevent cameltoe or any uncomfortable digging in while squatting low or doing RDLs. They're available in nine colors. Note that this pair is only available in one length (30.5 inches), which some testers found a tad long.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: One tester who is an avid weightlifter said this pair is one of her favorites to wear while lifting, thanks to its compressive fit. She said, "I also loved how they looked on my shape. They were very flattering giving you an hourglass shape because the waist has a design that hugs your curves. They are compressive without being constrictive or tight." These were a tester favorite for their thicker feel that's totally squat-proof.

Pros
Maintained shape after stretch recovery testing
High tester scores for comfort and breathability
Versatile for everyday wear outside of working out
Cons
A bit see-through, according to testers and GH pros
A bit of sheen makes this pair of Alo Yoga leggings a trendy option for workouts and casual wear alike. The sleek material is lightweight to easily move with you through exercises though it doesn't feel as substantial as other pairs. The material aced stretch recovery testing and showed no pilling whatsoever during Lab evaluations, but it did shrink a bit after extensive laundering. This pair is currently available in 24 colors; we love the array of bright color options as most leggings are only sold in darker, neutral shades.
WHAT TESTERS SAY: One tester reported that they were "very comfortable for everyday loungewear and almost any workout." I always reach for this pair of leggings when I'm heading to brunch straight from a Pilates class. The shiny material makes my legs look long and lean.
While the leggings received high scores overall for comfort and breathability, some testers found them a bit see-through during squats, and we agreed in our Lab testing.

Girlfriend Collective Compressive High-Rise Legging

Girlfriend Collective Compressive High-Rise Legging
Pros
Available up to a 6XL
Thick material
Stay-put waistband
Cons
Lay flat to dry only
Showed some pilling in Lab tests
Made using about 25 plastic bottles per pair to reduce environmental impact, this pair from Girlfriend comes in 14 colors, three inseam lengths, and sizes XXS through 6XL. The thick material provides snug compression ideal for high-impact activities. Testers appreciated that the waistband stayed put, with one noting, "I even reach for these over running shorts, because I know the waistband will stay in place no matter how fast I sprint."
On the downside, the fabric pilled in Lab tests and the need to lay them flat to dry is inconvenient.

CW-X Stabilyx Compression Capri

CW-X Stabilyx Compression Capri
Pros
Supportive panels for stability
Sweat-wicking material
Adjustable drawstring
Cons
Snug fit is difficult to put on
These compression capris are designed to support circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, and help prevent strain before, during, and after workouts. The interior adjustable drawstring helps fine-tune the fit, while moisture-wicking fabric keeps them breathable during workouts.
Because they’re meant to fit very snugly, they can take a little extra effort to pull on, and it’s important to line them up so the targeted support panels sit above and below the knees where they provide added stability. The very snug fit isn’t for everyone, but for those who want compression leggings, we thought this pair was one of the best options.

OFFLINE By Aerie Real Me High Waisted Crossover Legging

OFFLINE By Aerie Real Me High Waisted Crossover Legging
Pros
Affordable price
Chic crossover waistband detail
Very lightweight material
Cons
Not supportive enough for strenuous exercise
We’re all guilty of wearing leggings as pants, so it’s worth picking a pair that actually feel good. Styles meant for high-intensity workouts can be uncomfortable when lounging, but testers found this pair of Aerie leggings “super soft” and "very flattering" with a “comfy fit.”
In Lab tests, they stretched out after recovery evaluations and were a bit see-through, making them less suited for exercise. Their lightweight design makes them more ideal for travel and everyday wear.
| Available sizes | XXS–XXL |
| Material | 88% nylon, 12% elastane |
| Length | Short (23 in.), Regular (25 in.), Long (27 in.) |

Pros
Primaloft brushed fabric
Hidden drawcord for proper fit
Fully opaque
Cons
Prone to pilling
Even in winter, you can keep up outdoor workouts with cozy, fleece-lined leggings. This L.L. Bean style has a soft brushed interior that traps heat, keeping you warm on cold hikes. Fully opaque, it works on its own or as a base layer under ski pants. A hidden drawcord keeps the Primaloft pant in place, while a zippered back pocket and a leg pocket hold essentials. The leggings asre available in regular, petite, and plus sizes with two inseams.
While most shoppers don’t need fleece-lined leggings, we found this was one of the best options for those who do. That said, like all fleece-lined leggings, these are prone to pilling.

How we test workout leggings

In our latest test, the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab fiber scientists, personal trainers, and yoga instructors, along with other consumer testers evaluated 36 different pairs of workout leggings with over 150 testers, leading to over 1,080 data points to analyze before making these picks. These are the factors that we considered.
✔️ Consumer feedback: Real users with a range of body types and workout routines weighed in on whether the leggings were comfortable, well-fitting, flattering, opaque, and breathable. Before providing feedback, testers went on runs and walks, attended studio classes, did workouts at home, and more for over 500 collective hours.
✔️ Opacity: Using our specialized room with industry-standard lighting, we check to see if the leggings are see-through when stretched out.

✔️ Stretch recovery: A swatch of leggings fabric is stretched to a standard length for two hours. After it's released, we measure a benchmarked length after one minute and one hour to see how well the fabric returns to its original shape.
✔️ Moisture management: We measure how quickly drops of water are wicked away on the inside of the fabric to check whether the leggings will handle your sweat.

✔️ Washability: After five wash cycles, we look for shrinkage, change in appearance, and colorfastness to make sure the leggings can stand up to long-term laundering. Here, a GH analyst is measuring the waistband to see if any shrinkage occurred.

✔️ Pilling resistance: Swatches of fabric are rubbed together using our abrasion machine (pictured here) to see whether or not the fabric will form those pesky little balls of fibers.
✔️ Construction: Finally, each tight is scored on the quality of its fabrication, like whether it has flat seams and a gusset.
What to look for when shopping for the best workout leggings

✔️ Activities: Before shopping for new leggings, consider what type of workout you plan to wear them for:
- For low-impact exercise like yoga or Pilates, select a soft, brushed fabric that looks matte for a comfy feel that'll move with you.
- For high-impact exercise like weightlifting or running, choose a smooth, shiny fabric to reduce chafing.
✔️ Material: Synthetic performance fibers like nylon and polyester are better than cotton for workout pants because they’re often moisture-wicking, more durable, and have better stretch.
✔️ Fit: Most testers preferred high-waisted workout leggings. Note that not all high-waisted leggings will hit the waist at the same spot. In our testing, we found that some brands offer ultra high-waisted options for coverage past your waist.
✔️ Inseam: Your inseam refers to the length from your crotch to your ankle. To find your best fit, measure your inseam with a tape measure (you may need to enlist a friend's help). If the legging doesn't come in a variety of inseams, make sure to read the product description to confirm that the length is similar to your inseam so it won't be too long or short. Most leggings are sold in the following inseam lengths:
- Full-length: These are designed to meet your ankle with very little gap between the hem and your sock.
- 7/8: Slightly shorter than full-length, this style ends above the ankle, creating a small space between your sock and the tight.
- Capri: With a cropped fit, these offer the least coverage, hitting at mid-calf.
✔️ Construction: Look inside the leggings and inspect the interior seams—they should be flat (not raised), which makes them more comfortable and helps reduce irritation caused by sweat and movement. Also make sure there’s a gusset (an extra piece of fabric in the crotch area that’s typically triangular or diamond-shaped). It prevents leggings from riding up, especially with lots of motion.
✔️ Moisture wicking: Most activewear claims to be moisture-wicking, but not all fabrics passed our test. To see how a pair of leggings handles moisture, place a small drop of water on the inside of the legging; it should absorb quickly and spread out wide instead of beading up on the surface.
✔️ Opacity: Try on the leggings in bright light for best results. Then do a deep squat; if you can see your skin through the fabric, it’s not fully opaque. It's always a good idea to repeat this test periodically with each of the leggings you own because fabric can thin out or fade over time.
✔️ Built-in features: There are a few design elements that testers especially appreciated:
- Pockets: Testers requested leggings with pockets more than any other style. They especially liked when the leggings had both large side pockets and hidden waistband pockets to hold all their essentials. Note that some brands, like Lululemon, charge extra for pockets.
- Drawcord waistband: Some leggings have a hidden drawcord waistband to help keep the leggings in place, which is great if you have a smaller waist.
Are expensive gym leggings really worth it?

Sometimes, but not all expensive leggings are created equal. There are definitely $100-plus pairs that perform well in our Lab tests. That said, there are also more affordable finds that have performed just as well. When considering a splurge, prioritize leggings with flat seams, moisture-wicking fabrics, and a style you actually love wearing, because comfort, function, and confidence all matter.
What are the best leggings for the gym?

The Lululemon Wunder Train leggings are our top pick for gym workouts. Made with compressive, moisture-wicking fabric, they move with you and keep you comfortable during everything from cardio to strength training. For weightlifters, the GymShark Seamless leggings are another excellent choice. The stay-put waistband helps prevent rolling during squats and deadlifts, so you can focus on your form instead of adjusting your leggings.
