I’ve always admired people who could effortlessly maneuver a round brush in one hand and a hair dryer in the other to create a salon-quality blowout at home. If you are like me and haven’t quite mastered the technique or simply want to speed up your routine, a hair dryer brush is a game changer. These two-in-one tools can smooth, straighten, or add volume more easily and without the guesswork.

Our top picks:

✔️ Best Overall: Drybar The Double Shot Blow-Dryer Brush

Voluminous results with gentle heat for fine hair.

✔️ Best Value: Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer Hot Air Brush

A cult-favorite that dries hair fast and leaves it smooth and shiny.

✔️ Best for Thick Hair: HotTools Professional 24k Gold Charcoal Infused Blowout Styler

An easy-to-use model that combs easily through thick, coarse hair.

✔️ Most Attachments: Sally Beauty Ion Luxe 8-In-1 Airstyler Pro

A versatile styler with nine attachments for a range of looks and a smooth, shiny finish.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab recently tested 10 hair dryer brushes. We measured each brush’s cord length, weight, airflow, drying time, and temperature, logging a total of 10,980 temperature readings. We also used real human hair swatches to evaluate drying time. Finally, we enlisted consumer testers with different hair types and lengths to try the hair dryer brushes at home and share feedback through a survey.

The Double Shot Round Blow-Dryer Brush

Pros

  • Comfortable to hold
  • Gentlest heat in Beauty Lab tests
  • Great for fine hair

Cons

  • Smaller surface area might be hard to use for longer hair

It can be tricky to find a dryer brush that styles hair without scorching it, but Drybar's brush does that. It is expensive, but if you're concerned about keeping hair healthier long-term, it may be worth the splurge. In Beauty Lab evaluations, we found that this efficient hair dryer brush had one of the gentlest heat among the products we tested, preventing hair (especially thin, fine strands) from getting overly exposed to heat while still effectively styling. The brush’s narrow barrel and smaller surface area make it ideal for fine or short to medium-length hair.

TESTERS SAID: “I got great volume with this, yet my hair felt really smooth—it was comparable to a blow-out from a salon,” one of our testers said. “Much better results than using a regular dryer and separate brush,” another user noted. One more said it's comfortable to hold and that the brush combed easily through her hair.

best hair dryer brush revlon one step hair dryer and volumizer hot air brush

Pros

  • Dried hair fastest in Lab tests
  • Adds shine
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • Can get very hot during use

The cult-favorite Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer lived up to the hype in our Beauty Lab tests, delivering the fastest drying time of all the models we tried. The brush's shape allows for smoothing and glides easily through most hair textures. It also ranked highly for having simple-to-follow instructions and making hair look shinier. The downside: It does get quite hot during use, so be sure to apply a heat protectant and keep the tool moving to avoid concentrating heat on one area for too long.

TESTERS SAID: “It was good for creating smooth, straight hairstyles,” said one of our consumer testers. Another reported that it was great at drying hair quickly: “I liked how the brush head was large, which allowed it to dry more hair at once."

Professional 24k Gold Charcoal Infused Blowout Styler

Pros

  • Best scores for styling hair quickly
  • Top scores for easily brushing hair
  • Leaves hair looking shiny

Cons

  • Heavy

Hot Tools won the gold for effortlessly combing through and speedily styling even dense, coarse, or curly strands. In Beauty Lab evaluations, 100% of testers found that it styled hair fast and combed through strands with ease, although it's among the heaviest traditional blow dryer brushes we tested, so be prepared to put some elbow grease into perfecting your 'do. It ranked as the simplest to use compared with the other models, thanks to its intuitive rotating temperature control.

TESTERS SAID: “I was surprised by the speed and how fast my hair went from wet to dry,” one tester commented. Multiple testers also praised the end result, describing their hair as “shiny,” “sleek,” and “straight.”

Ion Luxe 8-In-1 Airstyler Pro

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Has multiple attachments
  • Attachments connect smoothly

Cons

  • May not be the best option for short hair
  • Layout of buttons makes it easy to unintentionally switch settings during use

With nine attachments and three heat settings, Sally Beauty’s all-in-one hairstyling system provides multiple options for styling without needing several tools. It also snagged a Beauty Innovation Award. Our testers rave that the round brush tool leaves their hair looking shiny and smooth, is easy to use, and doesn't get too hot. However, some noted that it can be easy to unintentionally switch settings during use due to the button layout.

TESTERS SAID: All of our consumer testers found that the attachments went on smoothly and the tool wasn’t heavy. One noted that it worked particularly well for her thick and wavy hair. "The handle is extremely lightweight—my arm doesn't get tired throughout styling. It's also SO quiet! I can still hear music playing on my phone while holding the styler by my ears."

One-Step Multi-Styler

Pros

  • Comfortable to hold
  • Adds shine
  • Great for all hair types

Cons

  • Style might not hold

The latest addition to Revlon’s One-Step line, the Multi-Styler earned a Beauty Award for offering versatility and a more comfortable user experience thanks to its thinner, more lightweight handle compared to previous models. The set comes with three easy-to-use attachments (an oval brush, round brush, and paddle brush) for volumizing, shaping, and straightening. Testers reported that it delivers just the right amount of heat for smoothing hair and adding shine without burning hair or scalp. Some did note that it might not create long-lasting waves or volume, so it’s a good idea to use a bit of holding spray after styling.

TESTERS SAID: “Compared to a traditional blow dryer, this was a thousand times easier to make my hair look smooth, shiny, and healthy,” one tester with thin, fine hair said. Another tester with thick, curly hair said, “It's hot enough to get through my hair and works quickly.”

FlexStyle Multi-Styler for Curly & Coily Hair

Pros

  • Diverse attachments for curly or straight styling
  • Converts into a hair dryer with diffuser

Cons

  • Heavy

Most blow dryer brushes are already perfect for curly hair since they combine smoothing and blow drying into one streamlined step, but if you want to embrace your texture, this pick is unique because it allows you to style natural hair straight or curly, thanks to diverse attachments and a swiveling base that also lets the tool function as a traditional hair dryer/diffuser combo. The brand claims the tool is less damaging than other tools, and we found it operates around 183ºF on average. One Beauty Lab analysis confirmed it had one of the fastest drying times we've seen.

TESTERS SAID: One of our consumer testers with thick, curly hair loved the smoothing brush and found that styles lasted for days. "I was impressed by its power, airflow, and versatility," a tester said. "I love that it comes with so many attachments, and that the diffuser has adjustable prongs to suit different hair lengths. It is definitely expensive and a bit heavier than a traditional hair dryer brush. I thought the tool was a bit hot and didn't produce the smoothest-looking style, but the versatility makes it worth it."

Airwrap i.d. Multi-styler and Dryer Curly+ Coily Hair

  • Easy-to-use attachments
  • Grips hair well
  • Professional-quality results

Cons

  • Noisy

This do-it-all dryer comes with all the tools you need to create almost any style, from a sleek blowout to soft curls, and it pairs with an app to customize the experience for your hair type. Testers with curly hair especially liked the Airwrap i.d. because they found the attachments “work better for their hair type” compared to other mult-stylers. They noted that the large round volumizing brush attachment grips hair well, smoothing strands, and adding volume for hair that looks professionally styled. While it delivers a great blowout, some testers noted that the tool is noisy during use.

TESTERS SAID: “I loved that I was able to get a good grip with the large round brush because it allowed me to get smoothness all the way up to my roots,” one tester said. The included storage case was also a hit, with one tester commenting, “I really appreciate the sleek case that holds everything for convenient storage.”

How we test hair dryer brushes

testing hair dryer brushes in the gh beauty lab

In our most recent hair dryer brush tests, we evaluated 10 dryer brushes through Beauty Lab evaluations and at-home usability testing. In the Lab, we assessed drying speed using real human hair swatches, temperature using thermocouples, and airflow. Lab experts logged 10,980 temperature readings during testing. We also measured factors like weight, size, and cord length.

At home, consumer testers evaluated the dryer brushes and completed detailed surveys on ease of use, performance, and overall satisfaction. After tallying 784 survey responses and combining them with Lab scores, we determined the top-performing hair dryer brushes.

How to choose the best hair dryer brush

Row of hair styling brushes with varying designs and functions.
Good Housekeeping

✔️ Cord length: The length of the cord you'll need depends on where you'll be styling and if there's an outlet nearby. For ultimate flexibility, look for a professional-length cord of at least eight feet. Less expensive models tend to have shorter cords, but that may limit your ability to style freely—you may not have an outlet near a mirror!

✔️ Ease of use: In our evaluations, ease of use, comfort when styling, and intuitiveness of the controls are all important considerations. Look for a tool that feels balanced in your hand, easy to grip, and isn't too heavy.

✔️ Heat settings: Multiple heat settings are ideal to work on a range of hair types and textures; lower heat settings are great for fine or damaged hair, while higher heat settings are good for healthy or thicker, coarser hair types. Our Beauty Lab pros recommend a tool with a cool shot to help seal in styles as well.

Are hair dryer brushes damaging?

linebreak

Like any hot tool, they can be if you don't prep hair properly. Exposing hair to excessive heat for long periods of time can cause damage to the structure of hair, so to prevent excessive damage, our Beauty Lab pros recommend coating hair in a heat protectant before use and letting hair partially air dry before using a hair dryer brush.
