When the leaves start to blush and then crunch underfoot, it always gets me excited to read. After all, the best companions to a misty morning or rainy day are a hot beverage and an atmospheric book.

As a books editor, I’m constantly reading books pre-publication to find the best titles to recommend (like the biggest author releases of the fall). But when I want an autumnal read, these are the books I reach for that are already on my shelf—and they’re likely available at your local library, without the long wait time.

Whether it’s a gothic thriller, a lyrical historical fiction, or a cozy fantasy, these are some of my favorite fall reads to turn to as the weather cools. Don’t forget to join the GH Book Club for more great book recommendations every month.

Based on the story of a real man in 18th-century France, this novel follows Tarare, a young man with an insatiable appetite. Abused and impossibly hungry, he navigates Revolutionary France and his own tragic desires as he becomes a sideshow performer, swallowing grotesque objects whole to survive. Inspiring disgust and compassion in turn, this gorgeously lyrical read embraces the feasting and rot of fall in a way that will stay with you long past the last swallow.

In Barcelona in 1945, young Daniel rescues an obscure title from a cemetery of forgotten books. He discovers the tome hides a painful history—and that a man with a burned face has been destroying everything the author wrote. With echoes of Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, this witty, eloquent tale explores forbidden love, the enduring power of books, and the tragedies of war.

Mexico, 1846: Something deadly is stalking the ranches on the Mexican-U.S. border, and it’s not just Anglos trying to seize the land. Childhood sweethearts Nena and Néstor were driven apart by a vampire attack that Néstor thought had killed Nena. Now, she’s a healer and he’s a vaquero, and they must protect their ranch from Anglo forces and the deadly teeth of colonialism. It’s a Mexican gothic horror tale featuring a smoldering romance.

While helping rural villagers, doctor Natalia tries to unravel the circumstances of her grandfather’s death. To do so, she must understand the stories he told, including those of his years of encounters with a deathless man and a deaf and blind woman connected with a tiger stalking her village. Blending folklore and the bloody history of the war-torn Balkans, this sweeping novel luminously interweaves narratives of magic and mystery.

At a small, elite liberal arts college in Vermont, student Richard finally finds the environment of privilege and intellect he has always craved. Swept into a world of intoxicating academic inquiry as he chases beauty and transcendence, he becomes part of an inner circle of students selected by a charismatic classics professor—and, shockingly, their connection leads to one of them being murdered.

This psychological thriller has stood the test of time. After an unexpected marriage proposal, the unnamed narrator is elevated from a lady’s companion to the head of a grand estate, only to find both the house and her husband haunted by the shadow of his first wife, Rebecca. With a deliciously creepy housekeeper, a handsome widower, and an estate full of secrets, this is a classic of Gothic literature for good reason.

Fall is the perfect time to read this cornerstone of high fantasy, and not just because you can binge the movies afterward. It is an iconic tale of daring, loyalty, and sacrifice involving hobbits, dwarves, elves, and more in an epic battle against evil. Dedicated readers can start the book on September 22, which is Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday and the beginning of the adventure.

Linus is a lonely, rule-following caseworker who assesses orphanages built for magical youth. When he’s called to a mysterious island that shelters six dangerous magical children—including a homicidal gnome, an amorphous green blob, and the 6-year-old Antichrist—his walls are slowly broken down in this tongue-in-cheek queer tale about found family.
