It’s hard to imagine not seeing Savannah Guthrie anchoring the news desk on the Today show, but it’s been a reality over the last few months.
Back in February, viewers learned that her mom, Nancy Guthrie, had been reported missing since January 31. The family crisis led Savannah to step away from hosting, prompting former co-star Hoda Kotb to return from retirement to report the news alongside Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Sheinelle Jones, Carson Daly, and Jenna Bush Hager.
As the investigation into Nancy's disappearance continues, Savannah surprised fans by sitting down with Hoda for an emotional interview on March 25. During their conversation, she made a major announcement about whether she plans to return to the Today show.
When is Savannah Guthrie going back to the Today show?
On March 27, fans were shocked to learn that Savannah Guthrie will return to the Today show on Monday, April 6, 2026.
She explained to Hoda that she's ready to return to a place that has been a safe haven throughout her time working on TV.
"It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not," Savannah said in a clip posted on Instagram. "But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now."
"I have been so grateful to have this family. I consider this my family, my greater family," she added. "When times are hard, you want to be with your family. And I want to be with my family."
She later admitted to Hoda that she doesn't know what going back to the news desk will look like ... but she's ready to give it a try.
"I don’t know if I can do it," she emotionally noted. "I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try ... I’m not going to be the same. But maybe it’s like that old poem: 'More beautiful in the broken places.'"
How does the Today show cast feel about Savannah Guthrie's return?
Jenna had a touching response to the announcement.
"[Savannah] has been braver than I can even imagine," she said in an Instagram clip on March 27. "She has been so vulnerable. I mean, she took her pain, her heart, her faith, her family in the midst of her despair, she laid it on the table for all of us. She didn’t have to do that. And she has. And I think of all of those people who’ve had heartbreak, they feel seen."
Al also noted that the date of Savannah's return comes with its own significance.
"What’s wonderful, it’s almost symbolic after Easter and the resurrection, the rising," he added, per People. "I think as a family we’ll hold hands and help her."
We can't wait to see Savannah back on our TV screens.
