What happens when Criminal Minds and Brooklyn 99 come together for an epic TV moment? We don’t know yet … but it looks like we’re going to find out!
In October 2024, fans of Matthew Gray Gubler were shocked to learn he’d be producing and starring in a new series called Einstein. Set to premiere on CBS during the 2026-2027 TV season, the show will follow lackadaisical Princeton University professor Lewis Einstein (a.k.a. the fictional great-grandson of Albert Einstein) as he finds himself working with the police to solve some unique crimes. While Matthew is set to play the titular role on the upcoming show, the network has kept silent on who he’ll be sharing the screen with when Einstein eventually makes its way to TV.
Well, Deadline surprised folks by sharing an exciting cast update for Einstein on March 5. According to the outlet, Brooklyn 99 star Melissa Fumero is officially joining the series and will appear alongside Matthew on the air. What’s more, the actress already expressed her excitement about her latest role in a new post on Instagram.
“Soooo excited to join this series!” she wrote shortly after her casting was revealed. “@gublergram is a dream partner as is this whole team! Thank you @cbstv for having me. Can’t wait for you guys to see Einstein! Here we goooooo!!”
Given how Matthew and Melissa are both beloved TV actors, fans were thrilled by the prospect of seeing them work together on Einstein.
“Omg a pair I didn't know I needed?! 😍,” one person wrote in the comments. “AMY SANTIAGO AND SPENCER REID OMG I'M DREAMING,” another shouted, referencing their respective roles on Brooklyn 99 and Criminal Minds. “Omgggg 👏👏 two of the most iconic characters from my favorite shows 🔥,” a different follower added.
Melissa is set to portray Teri, a Detective Inspector with the New Jersey State Police. Known for her discipline in her role, she expects the most from those she works with while also placing a lot of pressure on herself to be the best.
It’s also important to note that this isn’t the first time Melissa and Matthew have been on TV since their respective shows ended. Melissa previously appeared on Grosse Pointe Garden Society, which aired for one season on NBC in early 2025. As for Matthew, he reprised his role as Spencer Reid in a surprise cameo for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 in May 2025.
Well, we’re definitely interested!
