Sound the School Bell, ‘Abbott Elementary’ Fans—the Show Has Major News About Its Future

It’s time to put our school uniforms back on because Abbott Elementary has an announcement you’re going to want to hear.

Abbott Elementary follows the lives of teachers at a Philadelphia public school, and each installment manages to find humor, heart, and plenty of hijinks. Viewers turn in week after week to catch the latest of Abbott Elementary season 5 on Wednesday nights on ABC.

There are still a few new episodes of Abbott Elementary set to air this spring, but ABC has already decided to extend the beloved show's run. On March 4, the show’s official Instagram account shared a video featuring a voicemail from teacher Barbara Howard (portrayed by Sheryl Lee Ralph). In it, she shares the exciting news that Abbott Elementary was renewed for a sixth season.

“Hello! You’ve reached the voicemail box of Mrs. Barbara Howard,” she says. “I am too busy celebrating the good news to come to the phone right now. In case you haven’t heard, Abbott Elementary will be back again for season 6 on ABC. Oh, I cannot wait to get back to shaping the young minds and hearts of the future!”

Excitement immediately broke out on social media after viewers learned the good news.

“Hearing it from Barbara Howard makes it even more special 🥹♥️,” one person wrote in the comments.

“Tears of joy! ❤️🙌🏽 Thank you for sharing this message Mrs. Howard,” another said.

“We can’t wait for class to be in session 👏📚✨,” a different follower added.

For those wondering what else is in store for Abbott Elementary, it seems like there’s still plenty of drama left to close out season 5.

The March 11 episode (titled “Safety Day”) will bring an anti-drug campaign to the school, and Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti) gets angry when he discovers unfair advantages for some candidates in a district election, according to a press release shared by ABC.

Between this and the prospect of a new season, we’re so ready to head back to school!
