Fans were devastated to learn the Law and Order spinoff series, Law and Order: Organized Crime, was canceled after 5 seasons.
Star Christopher Meloni made an emotional Instagram post to thank the fans for supporting him throughout his time on TV.
Viewers are also begging Chris to return to Law and Order: SVU and reprise playing Elliot Stabler.
Law & Order fans, it looks like Elliot Stabler has officially left the TV building…for now.
Ever since Christopher Meloni started playing Stabler in 1999, fans have adored seeing him be part of the Law & Order franchise. First, he appeared on Law & Order: SVU from its first season until he left from a lead role at the end of season 12 in 2011. And while he had made cameos throughout the years, Stabler also popped up on different installments of the original Law & Order and the one-season spinoff, Law & Order: Trial by Jury.
But folks really got to see Stabler—and subsequently, Chris—shine when he got his own series, Law & Order: Organized Crime. Following Stabler as he solved cases involving organized groups within the criminal world in New York City, we also saw him face some of his biggest personal challenges through it all.
But now that all seems to be over. Per an April 16 report from Deadline, Law & Order: Organized Crime has been canceled after five seasons, leaving us to wonder about Stabler—and Chris’s—future with the franchise. Mainly: Is Christopher Meloni returning as Elliot Stabler on Law and Order: SVU?
Shortly after the news broke, Chris went on Instagram on April 16 to share his thoughts on the big news. As he emotionally thanked fans for their support, the video he posted seemingly implied this was the end of the road for Stabler.
“Hey everyone, I just saw that they announced OC, Organized Crime, won’t be coming back,” he stated. “So I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans, who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back ... It was a good ride, I had a great time playing him. It was a great ride, but thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of. Nearly 17 odd years.”
Naturally, seeing Chris break his silence about his future on Law & Order: Organized Crime immediately had his close friends from SVU rallying around him for support.
“P4L ❤️,” Mariska Hargitay wrote in the comments. “👏👏👏👏👏👑👑👑👑👑,” Ice-T added.
What’s more, fans were heartbroken to see Chris’ time on TV cut short.
“They can't take Stabler away from us twice. 💔💔💔💔,” one person begged. “I'm so sad. I hope Elliot returns back to SVU. 😭 We can't lose him and you again,” another agreed. “It's not the end of Stabler. Nope. No way. They can take away OC but never Elliot ❤️❤️,” a different follower added.
Now, the viewers make a good point about Chris having the opportunity to pop back up on Law & Order: SVU. After all, Kelli Giddish was able to do that after previously leaving the show in late 2022 and later returning for season 27 in 2025 amid years of cameos. So, maybe this could be a reason for Stabler to become more present in the SVU, once again bringing Chris back into the TV fold over there.
Despite Law & Order: Organized Crime being done, don’t think this is the last time we’ll see Chris on the small screen! He’s set to appear in a new series called The Land at Hulu, which was developed by Paradise creator Dan Fogelman and focuses on a family who has financial ties to an NFL team in Cleveland, Ohio. And as for his role on the show, he’ll play head coach Danny amid co-stars like William H. Macy, Mandy Moore, Chloe Bennet, and more.
No matter the case, we’ll be rooting for Chris!
