1Declutter
Susumu Yoshioka//Getty Images“Decluttering makes a home feel lighter, both physically and mentally,” says Kelsey Nodgaard, owner and professional organizer at Smart Move Organizing. In one weekend, going space by space and removing items that no longer work or aren’t needed can make a big difference, she adds.
In the process, you’ll be creating usable space and an immediate sense of peace and calm in your home. Nodgaard also points out that regular decluttering will help you prevent buildup and will keep your homes more manageable over time.
If you don’t know where to start, try:
- Editing your wardrobe and kitchen yearly.
- Decluttering your toy room and pantry every 6 months.
- Going through your garage in April or May, before summer is in full swing.
- Hitting the outdoor toys at the same time.
- Editing your holiday items before putting them back into storage.
2Paint Just One Wall
South_agency//Getty Images“A new paint color is one of the quickest ways to refresh a space,” says Evelina Juzėnaitė, principal interior designer at Planner 5D. “It doesn't matter what color you choose; you can paint one wall or a small room in a single day, and it will completely change its style.“
Juzėnaitė recommends using matte paint for a more refined look that is also easy to clean.

3Update Hardware
MoMo Productions//Getty Images“Replacing outdated handles and hardware in your kitchen, bathroom or bedroom closet will make the entire room look more modern,” says Juzėnaitė. “Switch to what's trendy now, such as matte black, aged brass or matte nickel.” Doing so is budget-friendly but can produce high-quality results.
4Rearrange What’s On Your Shelf
Spiderplay//Getty ImagesIf you have a bookshelf or open shelving, don’t forget to rearrange the items on them with aesthetics in mind. “Thoughtfully placed decor on shelves can transform clutter and add interesting design solutions,” says Juzėnaitė. “It's all about multi-level placement, mixing textures and adding free space.”
Juzėnaitė says to use the 60-30-10 formula, which means 60% books, 30% decorative items and 10% personal or unusual items that reflect your personality.

5Improve Kitchen Organization (Especially in Small Spaces!)
Olga Shumytskaya//Getty ImagesSeman also suggests to declutter cabinets and drawers, add organizers and rethink how items are stored. “Better organization improves functionality immediately and makes kitchens feel larger and less chaotic,” he adds.
Start by prioritizing vertical storage, drawer dividers and designated work zones can dramatically improve day-to-day use, Seman recommends.
6Tidy Up Your Tech
Elva Etienne//Getty ImagesGala Magriñá, holistic interior designer and expert, points out something simple yet people often overlook. “You can have a stunning space, but if cords aren’t wrangled, it will detract from the overall look and feel,” she says. “Reusable cable ties are a game-changer, and they are pretty cheap and easy to find online. They’re simple, effective and perfect for preventing tangles in drawers or workstations.”

7Give Your Bathroom a Refresh
sheilasay//Getty ImagesAnd no, you won’t need a contractor or a home renovation budget. Magriñá says swapping out your shower curtain and bath mat can make a big difference. “[They] take up a ton of visual real estate, so upgrading these for something new and fresh also helps tremendously.”
In addition, if there is space on your bathroom wall for art, you can add or update pieces to reflect a bigger goal, or with something that sparks joy for a super boost.
