It’s the brand that revolutionised the hairdryer and curling tong, and now Dyson is coming for another everyday beauty gadget: the electric toothbrush. The tech giant has just unveiled Dyson CameraJet, its first foray into oral care, and one which promises to fix your biggest dental blind spot.

Because not only does CameraJet brush your teeth, it flosses them as it goes. A 100k pixel macro lens camera plus AI tech tracks the brush around your mouth, spotting gaps and blast-cleaning them within 100 milliseconds.

It’s launching at a very Dyson-esque £419 but that money buys you something that’s less a toothbrush, more a miniature, high-tech dental hygienist in your hand. And if you’re in the 90% majority who fails to floss as much as they should, Dyson thinks this AI eye is going to revolutionise how you look after your smile.

What, a camera in your mouth?

Yes, really. Dyson’s new gadget scans 28 live images per second using AI tech that’s been trained on 470,000 dental images. The instant it spots a gap, the brush blasts a targeted burst of mouthwash straight where it’s needed. In other words, it literally flosses and rinses while you brush.

Doesn’t a water flosser do this already?

This is Dyson, arch disrupter of beauty regimes, so you can bet there’s more to it than just squirting out a haphazard spray of mouthwash. Dyson has spent six years reinventing the traditional water flosser which typically blasts out a single 'needle jet' stream of water. According to Dyson, this type of flosser often pierces plaque without actually shifting it.

The CameraJet, though, uses a fan-shaped conical spray which promises to sweep away more plaque across a wider surface area while also being gentler on gums and enamel.

If you’ve ever used a traditional water flosser, you’ll also know it can be a struggle to get a consistent jet as you wrestle the gadget round your mouth. Dyson has fixed that one as well, with an ‘anti-gravity’ silicone tank in the handle which means you can tilt the brush up, down or sideways without losing pressure, right down to the last drops of mouthwash.

Refills are made easy and speedy too. Just pop the brush on the charging dock, and it’ll reload the mouthwash reservoir at the touch of a button, in just three seconds.

A thorough brush and floss session with CameraJet should take in the region of three minutes, which is slightly longer than the recommended two-minute time for brushing alone. However when you think of how long it takes to either reach for traditional flossing string or use a separate water flosser, it's actually a time saver. Doing two things in one is also designed to encourage people brush for as long as it really takes to get a proper cleanse. Our average brushing time is a shameful 45 seconds, which isn't enough.

What if I want to skip flossing?

Tsk! But yes, the toothbrush works independently of the mouthwash jet. You can switch automatic jetting on and off, so you don’t have to floss with every brush. There’s a manual jet option if you fancy, as well.

What about the brush itself?

Oh yes, the toothbrush. While we’re already well served with smart sonic brushes that map brushing sessions with AI-powered tooth-tracking technology, Dyson says its own toothbrush lives up to the brand’s reputation for clever cleaning.

While it’s not as game-changing as the idea of simultaneously flossing and brushing, CameraJet’s cleansing tech has a few talking points of its own. Firstly, Dyson says it looked at competitor brushes in slow-mo and spotted a tendency to jam and stall. Its engineers then came up with a variable sonic oscillation motion which keeps bristles moving smoothly without stalling, removing ‘up to 69% more plaque’ than top premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas.

CameraJet has a unique brush shape plus a sonic tech to stop stalling

The brand has also redrawn the brush head design itself, using a unique dual-bristle shape which reflects the fact that teeth aren’t flat. Dyson says this gives the optimum shape for tackling surface stains and gentle gumline cleaning in one. Plus, you can adjust your brushing intensity to your preferred comfort level.

What else does the AI do?

Pardon the pun, but CameraJet is literally a live stream. It’s both wifi and bluetooth connected, and the camera is, in the brand’s words, a ‘high-quality endoscope’ (without intruding down the back of your throat!).

The brush’s camera links to a live feed via an app

This allows users to see what their dentist sees, through a live-viewing feature in the MyDyson app. Linking CameraJet to the app gives you access to personalised feedback and cleaning coaching, letting you see areas for improvement and brush up even better over time.

And if the idea of an AI camera monitor makes you grit your teeth with anxiety, don’t worry. The camera is only active during auto-jetting and live viewing modes, and nothing gets stored on the product or in the cloud.

Can I use it with my regular dental products?

Technically yes, but Dyson is launching its own toothpaste and mouth rinse which come with the £419 starter kit. The toothpaste is deliberately free of foamy SLS to avoid bubbles that would risk blocking the camera’s view. So if you’re not using Dyson’s own-brand paste, you’ll want to use a similar non-foaming formula to get the most effective flossing.

What’s the GH verdict?

CameraJet's launch has been wrapped in such security, we haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, but the concept alone is certainly impressive. When we heard that Dyson was entering a new beauty category, our money was on a facial gadget, so we were stunned to learn it was something so unexpected, but also a first-of-a-kind product that genuinely solves a problem.

The new tech promises a healthier, brighter smile

Let’s face it, we’ve all been nagged about not flossing enough, whether it's by our dentist or our own conscience when we spit blood into the sink. And with mounting evidence to show that gum disease is a factor in everything from dementia to heart disease, good oral care isn't just about preventing cavities and gumline recession. If CameraJet really can make our mouth healthier, it’s a beauty innovation that goes beyond vanity.

As with all things Dyson, that tech comes at a cost. £419 isn’t the sort of casual cash that the tooth fairy pops under a pillow, but then again it’s less than the RRP of both Oral B’s and Philips’ most premium electric toothbrushes.

CameraJet is definitely an investment, but if it means getting a gold star sticker from the dentist, it might just be worth opening up your wallet as well as your mouth.
