It’s the biggest cliché in the beauty playbook: a tearful yet defiant woman sits in the salon chair and watches years of hair tumble to the floor, severing inches as a physical representation of everything else being cut from her life. Except this moment, this decision, is one she’s fully in control of.

The dramatic ‘new hair, new me’ mic drop of a haircut is a perfectly understandable response for anyone undergoing a traumatic breakup, be it a relationship or a job. However, it’s one that’s so emotionally loaded that it can frequently lead to hair regret and, ultimately, end up adding to the stress. ‘These hair decisions can feel very urgent, but that doesn’t always mean they’re right long-term,’ notes top hairdresser (and frequent hand-holder) Gustav Fouche.

Emotionally loaded hair decisions are often unwise, says Gustav

Happily, hairdressers are now increasingly seeing a confident new iteration of the breakup haircut, something that Gustav calls ‘no-regrets reinvention’ hair. Rather than attempting to chop away the past via the hairdresser’s scissors – and risk throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater – he sees women choosing to simply enhance what they love most about their hair as they go through life’s ups and downs: a tweak, a refinement, a well-deserved nourishing hair treat.

It’s an approach that’s playing out publicly in women like Nicole Kidman, who is divorcing husband Keith Urban, the post-Ben Affleck Jennifer Lopez, and Lily Allen in the wake of her split from David Harbour. While we can’t know their exact conversations with their hair stylists, we can say they’re looking like their true selves but better than ever as they navigate new life stages.

Nicole Kidman’s hair is the perfect example of modern reinvention, says Gustav

In the real world, the shift to ‘no-regrets reinvention’ is welcomed by Gustav, a man who’s had to talk many clients down from a precarious haircut ledge over the years. ‘Hair is one of the few things that physically retains our history,’ he says. ‘For example, if you went on a high-protein diet, we can see that in the hair months later. That’s really where the breakup haircut cliché comes from. When we go through emotional times, there’s this urge to cut away that history and start fresh.’

Ultimately, that classic ‘breakup cut’ comes from a negative headspace that’s focused on the past, rather than moving forward with self-assurance. ‘Previously, that desire to start over often translated into drastic, symbolic changes, such as cutting off length or going for something completely different overnight,’ says Gustav. ‘It was less about what actually suited the person and more about creating a visible emotional reset.’

‘Now we’re seeing a much more confident and considered approach,’ he says. ‘Reinvention hair is about enhancing what already works, rather than stripping everything away. It’s not about reacting – it’s about evolving.’

This change in attitude is something that Gustav feels is making his job a lot easier – and clients happier. ‘In the past, I would absolutely have to gently dissuade clients far more often,’ he says. ‘They would come in straight after a breakup wanting a huge transformation. Often, once the moment passes, clients are grateful they didn’t completely change their look. As a hairdresser, you have to balance understanding how they feel with making sure they don’t do something they might regret.’

‘Reinvention hair is a much smarter approach because it allows clients to feel refreshed and different without losing their identity,’ he says. ‘I always advise subtle shifts that elevate your look, rather than completely overwriting it. That way, you still get that emotional lift, but without the regret.’

How to do no-regrets reinvention hair

Less is more! Nicole Kidman is the perfect example of a woman pairing a fresh start with clever, considered tweaks to her hair. The actress, 58, recently added a soft, flattering fringe that lends a ‘facelift’ effect and has prompted a great deal of ‘divorce suits her’ commentary.

‘Nicole Kidman is a great example of modern reinvention,’ says Gustav. ‘She’s introduced a fringe, but it’s a long, versatile one, which already makes it a softer, more flexible change. She looks and feels completely different, but she hasn’t sacrificed the length or overall look that really suits her.’

‘The fringe itself is beautifully done as it’s softly rounded, rather than harsh, which enhances her features. It emphasises her cheekbones and draws attention to her eyes, which instantly makes her look more engaging.’

‘Even the colour shift is subtle but effective,’ he adds. ‘She’s gone slightly warmer, more honey-golden, which complements her skin tone much better than an overly cool blonde. It’s a perfect example of enhancing what already works, rather than changing everything.’

What should I ask for at the salon?

A ‘no-regrets reinvention’ booking should be shaped around your hair texture and face shape, rather than your emotional state. ‘There are so many ways to reinvent your hair without going for a drastic cut,’ says Gustav. ‘You can slightly adjust the length or add more shaping and layering through the front to frame the face and highlight your features.’

Colour is one of the most powerful tools, he continues. ‘We can add a few lighter pieces, soften the tone, or introduce a bit of warmth. It doesn’t need to be dramatic to make a big difference – even small colour changes can create that fresh, new feeling.’

A hair change doesn’t need to be dramatic to feel exciting and fresh, says Gustav

You don’t even have to cut your hair to feel reinvented. ‘Styling also plays a huge role,’ says Gustav. ‘Adding more volume, texture or movement, whether that’s soft waves, a sleeker finish or more bounce, can completely change how someone sees themselves.’

Whatever you opt for, keep it small but impactful. ‘It’s all about creating a noticeable shift that feels exciting, but still very much like yourself, just a more elevated version,’ says Gustav.

In other words: you do you – just better.
