Here at GH, we love how a simple beauty statement can tell a story, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh proved that a carefully styled hairstyle is an elegant way to pay royal respect.
Earlier today, members of the royal family gathered at the British Museum to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, and GH feels sure that Sophie’s hair look was one that Her Majesty would have approved of. The Duchess was a particular favourite of the late Queen, and Sophie’s poised appearance today quietly reflected their enduring bond.
Sophie looked beautiful as ever, her blonde locks swept off her face and masterfully twisted into a low, regal bun. The Duchess is no stranger to an elegant updo, from half-up styles to easy ponies, but on this occasion, her bun could have been a subtle tribute Queen Elizabeth II’s iconic first portrait imagery taken in 1952.
There’s a certain regal similarity. Both royals parted their hair to the side for added elegance, and embraced styles with twisted strands at the nape, forming an intricate, softly rolled and sculpted finish.
Sophie brings the style up to date with a touch of lift at the crown, adding volume and elevating the overall look. Not only is it a beautiful tribute, but it may also be one of her most elegant styles yet – and we’re certain it’s one Her Majesty would have loved.
The Duchess let her hairstyle take the lead, opting for light, natural makeup so as not to overshadow it. She allowed her natural freckles to shine through, pairing them with a fresh, glowing base. Just a hint of blusher and bronzer appeared to be dusted across the apples of her cheeks, creating a soft, natural flush.

Her eyes were emphasised with a subtly smokey eye and a few coats of mascara for her fluttering lashes. To finish, a soft pink lip was painted on – a true Sophie classic.
Altogether, a timeless look that works just as well today as it did in 1952.
