We almost mistook Penny Lancaster’s latest Instagram post for a throwback, all thanks to the revival of her ’90s supermodel blowout. The model and TV presenter looked sensational yesterday when she became the latest recipient of the Freedom of the City of London – and her glossy, voluminous hair was impossible to miss.
Styled to perfection, Penny’s blonde strands cascaded to her shoulders in soft, polished waves – with face-framing pieces curving outwards and the ends subtly curling inwards.
‘Her glossy, voluminous blow-dry feels like a real nod to her supermodel era in the 90s,’ says top hairstylist and Fudge Professional Global Ambassador Jonathan Andrew.
He adds, ‘The soft blonde layers and bouncy movement are classic hallmarks of that decade’s iconic salon blowout, but what makes the look feel modern is the healthy shine and softer finish.’
While the style may be synonymous with the 90s, Penny’s hair certainly doesn’t feel dated today. ‘It’s such a timeless style because it embraces softness and glamour rather than fighting against texture,’ Jonathan explains. ‘The layered movement, glossy finish and face-framing volume are universally flattering and prove that a classic supermodel blowout remains one of the most elegant, confidence-boosting hairstyles at any age.’
Penny is proof that it’s a style that works at any stage of life, whether you’re in your 20s or 50s. ‘It works incredibly well for Penny because it adds body and dimension around the face, which can be especially flattering on mature hair,’ explains Jonathan.
‘Hair naturally changes with age due to hormones and moisture loss, but a glossy layered blow-dry like this can instantly create the illusion of fuller, healthier-looking hair,’ he says.
While we’re sure Penny had the help of a pro, a Penny-worthy blowout is entirely possible at home with a few expert tips from Jonathan – and it all starts in the prep. ‘The key to recreating this kind of supermodel blow-dry is focusing on moisture and preparation before you even pick up the dryer,’ he says. ‘Using shine-boosting products, such as the Fudge Professional Mirror Gloss Shampoo and Conditioner, are ideal for boosting hydration and helping the hair maintain that reflective, healthy finish.’
‘For that polished look, lightweight mists help support the style without weighing the hair down. The Fudge Professional Mirror Gloss Pre-Blow Dry Spray works brilliantly as a pre-treatment to improve shine and overall hair condition before styling. This is an essential for heat protection, anti-frizz control, shine and hold while still feeling weightless,’ he adds.
As for the blow-dry itself, it can feel daunting – we get it. But Jonathan says it’s just about having the right tools. ‘A powerful hairdryer paired with radial bristle brushes helps create volume at the roots and smoothness through the lengths,’ he says. ‘Start by sectioning the hair, and overdirect each section upwards from the root while applying steady tension with the brush.’
‘Heat control is also hugely important,’ he says. ‘Using medium heat rather than excessive heat helps preserve shine and maintain the condition of the hair. Plus, if you’re blonde like Penny, overheating the hair can dull blonde tones and make mature hair appear drier and more brittle.’
Jonathan says it’s also important to make sure the hair is fully dry for maximum staying power. ‘If any dampness remains, volume drops quickly and natural frizz or waves can return as soon as you step outside.’
Needless to say, we’re ready to have our own supermodel hair moment.
