Craving a change? Let Hannah Waddingham’s latest look be proof that a hair transformation doesn’t need to be drastic to make a big impact. The actress just showed us how one simple hair trick can completely transform your look in your 50s, no scissors required.

Yesterday, Hannah stepped out in sunny London, spectating the Wimbledon championships. The actress looked phenomenal sporting a crisp white three-piece, complemented by her effortlessly cool bob. But we couldn’t help noticing that something subtle had changed — and it had somehow completely transformed her face.

That’s the power of a parting. We usually see Hannah wearing her blonde bob with a neat centre parting or occasionally swept to the right. However, for the Championships, she changed things up with a deep left-side parting. The simple switch gave her bob a completely different feel.

‘I love this subtle update on Hannah’s bob,’ says Jason Collier, celebrity hairstylist, founder of Studio23 and Key Opinion Leader at Jerome Russell Bblonde. ‘Simply switching her parting has softened one side of the face while adding more volume and movement on the other, giving the style a fresher, more modern feel,’ he adds.

‘It’s a small change that makes a surprisingly big impact,’ Jason says. ‘Over time, our hair naturally settles into one direction, so flipping the part instantly creates lift at the roots, making the hair look fuller and giving the face a different frame.’

He notes that, although it’s a subtle shift, it can make you look instantly refreshed and rejuvenated. ‘It can highlight your cheekbones, soften stronger features or even make the eyes appear more open,’ he says. All of which is especially flattering on a mature face.

This can be used to your advantage, as Jason notes, it’s all about creating balance. ‘Look at your features,’ he says. ‘If one eyebrow sits slightly higher or one side of your face feels stronger, parting your hair to the opposite side can create a more balanced look.’

To create a new parting (and to get it to behave), Jason recommends starting with damp hair. ‘The biggest mistake people make is trying to force dry hair into a new direction,’ he says. ‘Create your new parting while your hair is damp, then blow-dry the roots into place using a nozzle attachment and a medium round brush or your fingers for a softer finish.’

For a natural, effortless finish like Hannah’s, he recommends finishing with a light texturising spray or a flexible-hold hairspray to lock in the lift. He notes, ‘If your hair has been parted the same way for years, it may take a few wears before it naturally settles into its new position,’ but a little persistence never hurts.
