In theory, straight, fine hair sounds like it should be easy to manage. But in reality, when your hair refuses to hold a curl or even volume, finding a flattering haircut can be surprisingly difficult.

Enter the ‘slip bob’, the latest style to join the ever-growing bob lineup. Not only is it incredibly chic and A-list approved, it’s also one of the few cuts that works brilliantly with even the most stubborn, straight locks.

Is this the most flattering, low-effort bob?

What is the slip bob?

Cast your mind back to the 90s, when satin slip dresses reigned supreme – sleek, fluid and effortlessly chic. Translate that effortless, minimalist feel to hair, and that’s exactly what the slip bob’s all about.

‘The slip bob just kisses the shoulders, and there’s no heavy line. It feels very soft, luxurious and elegant,’ explains Dale Herne, stylist at top salon Hershesons. ‘It’s understated, and that’s exactly what makes it feel so modern.’

Margot Robbie is the latest celebrity to bring the style back into the spotlight – fittingly pairing the cut with a satin slip dress.

Is it low-maintenance?

Fine, straight hair has a habit of falling flat, which can make styling feel like a losing battle. Thankfully, rather than relying on heavy layers and texture, the slip bob is defined by natural movement. In short, you won’t have to rely on curling tongs and layers of hairspray to make it look good.

‘It actually relies on its shape rather than styling for its finish,’ explains Conor Mclaughlin, stylist at Hershesons’ Belgravia salon. ‘The hair falls into shape rather than needing a curl or volume to look intentional. It works with the hair’s natural fall instead of fighting it.’

It’s all about working with your natural texture

According to Conor, the slip bob doesn’t even need to be blow-dried to look good. ‘It can be dried with a round brush in minutes, but even when left to air-dry, it’ll still look polished. There’s no need for daily heat styling, which is exactly what makes it such a realistic everyday cut.’

I’m 40+, will this style work on me?

The benefits don’t stop there. The slip bob’s length and soft shape also make it one of the most flattering cuts for mature women.

‘Where it sits, just above or at the collarbone, is one of the most universally flattering lengths,’ says Conor. He adds that longer, heavier styles can often look ageing. At this length, however, the eye is drawn to the jawline, creating a more sculpted look.

Need concrete proof? Just look to the red carpet. The slip bob has already won over the A-listers.
