It’s no secret that here at GH, we’re more than a little bob-obsessed. And it’s certainly no secret that the style looks particularly incredible in your 50s and beyond – just look to the A-listers for proof. Hannah Waddingham, Helen Mirren and Pamela Anderson, to name just a few, prove time and again just how chic a bob can be.

That said, not all bobs are created equal. Some channel effortless Parisian-girl chic, while others enhance natural texture – and some can even deliver subtle face-lifting effects. But whichever style you choose, a bob will always feel timeless and ageless.

‘There’s a reason the bob has never gone out of style: it’s elegant, fresh and polished but never stiff,’ says Elliot Bute, stylist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. ‘This iconic cut transcends fleeting trends. For women over 50, a well-executed bob offers something even more powerful. It flatters, uplifts and simplifies, all while making a confident statement. Whether you’re drawn to sleek lines or soft waves, natural texture or a precision cut, the right bob can refresh your entire look, without sacrificing ease.’

We, of course, couldn’t resist getting some expert input. Ahead, top hairstylists share the bob styles that feel fresh and work beautifully for mature hair.

Butterfly

If you’ve caught yourself staring at Hannah Waddingham’s swishy bob in awe, you’re not alone. What makes her haircut so mesmerising? According to celebrity hairstylist Melissa Timperley, it’s all in the soft, choppy layering that resembles the fluttering of a butterfly.

‘The butterfly bob combines the fullness and shape of a classic bob with the airiness of longer, face-framing layers through the crown and around the front, says Melissa ‘The result is a cut that feels lifted and bouncy rather than heavy, with plenty of natural texture and swing.’

2

Face contouring bob

With a great haircut comes great strategy — and the face-contouring bob proves exactly that. According to Haug London Haus founder Philipp Haug, this style can even take years off the face.

‘It focuses on bespoke architectural tailoring. By combining a classic bob length with a full fringe or effortless curtain bangs, this look creates a frame that acts as ‘built-in contouring’ for the face,’ he explains.

Philipp points to Demi Moore as the ultimate example. Take note at how a deep side parting brings coverage to the face, and the other side is tucked neatly behind the ear to highlight those incredible cheekbones. Frankly, that’s all the convincing we need.

Blurred bob

A bob that can soften harsh scissor lines and blur signs of ageing might sound too good to be true, but Pamela Anderson’s latest ’do proves otherwise.

Enter: the blurred bob. ‘It’s soft and feathered rather than blunt, thus gently frames the eyes and cheekbones and creates a blurred, anti-ageing finish,’ says Jonathan Andrew, global hair ambassador for Fudge Professional.

And yes, it can also work miracles for fine hair, too. ‘This cut removes weight from within the shape without losing fullness. This means the hair can lift easier, giving the illusion of density.’

Bang bob

The easiest way to level up your bob? As proven by Helen Mirren herself: bangs.

According to Leslie Drummond, senior stylist at John Frieda Mayfair, fringes and silver locks, in particular, are a match made in hair-heaven. ‘Face framing fringes can enhance the silver reflections near your face and brighten your complexion.’

Bounce bob

We all dream of bouncy hair, but what if we told you there’s a certain length that can instantly make your hair look fuller and perkier? Enter: the bounce bob.

Cut right at the corner of the jaw, the bounce bob is designed to deliver extra oomph. How? ‘The length is the key point of this bob, because it’s what gives you fullness without the weight dragging it down,’ says Iestyn Griffths, OSMO ambassador.

‘For fine or thinning hair, it works really well because you’re removing that extra length that can make the hair look flat,’ he adds. ‘Keeping it at the jaw means the ends sit thicker and the shape naturally lifts, so it gives that fuller, bouncier finish without needing loads of styling.’

6

Kicktail bob

In need of a little lift? The kicktail bob could be your answer. Characterised by 90s-inspired flicked-out ends. Philipp says it’s particularly flattering on women over 50.

‘The movement of a kicktail bob makes it feel modern and current,’ he says. ‘The flicking out and the length around the neck feel quite gentle and feminine, which is very flattering.’

Better yet, it’s one of those clever cuts that can create the illusion of thicker hair. ‘Since it’s not too heavy or structured, it can actually help create the illusion of movement and body, which is great for finer hair types,’ he explains.

The collarbone bob

The name might give it away – and it really is as simple as that: a bob that skims the collarbone. According to John Frieda Salons creative director Zoë Irwin, it’s one of the most ageless and flattering bob styles around.

‘The reason it’s so youth-boosting is because the line of the cut falls slightly longer at the front and it curves around the jaw,’ says Zoë. ‘Sagging around the jaw line is always the number one concern at this life stage. This style combats it by visually strengthening the profile of the jaw, and it also swings as you move, which is always flattering.’

Zoë makes a convincing case – and so does Alison Hammond, who proves that a longer bob can look incredibly chic in your 50s.

Graduated bob

The graduated bob has made a major comeback over the past year – and for good reason. If you’re not up to speed on your hair terminology, a graduated bob is a style in which the hair gradually gets longer through the length.

As for the reason it’s surged back into the mainstream? ‘It’s a really versatile cut because graduation can be placed in different ways to create shape and volume,’ Jonathan explains. ‘It’s great because it can be used to highlight jawlines and cheekbones,’ he adds.

It’s a bob that will work on just about any hair type, including finer locks. ‘On finer hair, the graduated bob can help expand the width of the haircut and gives you the appearance of more volume.’

Laser-cut bob

A bob cut with such precision, it looks almost laser-sharp. As hair trendspotter Tom Smith puts it, ‘it’s a perfectly measured, sharp and precise one-length bob that sits between the very top of the shoulder and the corner of the jaw.’

He adds, ‘This is a great option for those with fine hair, as the cut enhances the appearance of thickness and density. It’s also incredibly easy to achieve for those with naturally flat or fine hair.’

Beehive bob

It’s practically a rite of passage for anyone who’s ever had a bob: you go for the big chop and the realise you have no idea how to style it. Thankfully, the beehive bob keeps things simple, all whilst adding plenty of lift. As Mitchell Ladbrook, senior stylist Nicola Clarke salon says, ‘it instantly takes a normal bob to a cool, youthful look.'

This 60s-inspired shape, as seen on Sharon Stone, is created with some clever back-combing, and a spritz of hairspray.

If you’re ready to take your bob up a notch, consider the cheekbone bob. Jessica Chastain’s shorter style falls right at the jaw, curving inwards to accentuate the cheekbones.

It’s a look that left the star almost unrecognisable, instantly taking years off her appearance. One glance at the 49-year-old actress is all the proof needed of just how youthful, and flattering, the style can be.

Bombshell midi

Say goodbye to the lob, say hello to the ‘bombshell midi’, as seen on beauty mogul Trinny Woodall.

According to Philipp Haug, the bombshell midi is defined by structure, swing and an ‘expensive’ finish.

‘We’ve been seeing mid-length hair a lot, but what makes the bombshell midi special is that it’s a big, bouncy blow-dry with lots of volume. That makes it really modern and cool,’ says Phillip.

Better still, it works beautifully on mature hair. ‘If you’re worried about hair looking thin, this length is perfect to hold a bouncy blow-dry and give the illusion of fullness,’ he explains.
