Between this week's heatwave, humid air and now a rainy weekend, our hair has certainly been put to the test. And if you have mature, frizz-prone hair, you'll know that keeping your style looking polished can feel like an impossible task. While we'll always have a soft spot for the humble claw clip, we're ready for a little more inspiration.

‘In these sorts of weather conditions it’s really important to work with the natural texture of the hair,’ says top hairstylist and co-founder of Haug London Haus, Phillip Haug.

‘It's difficult to maintain any style in the rain. But, for straight hair, try wearing it up in a style that works with your texture. A smooth ponytail, bun or plaits will keep you looking groomed and polished’ he tells GH.

For those with curly or textured hair, humid weather can present its own challenges. ‘Textured hair is naturally thirstier, it will absorb any moisture or humidity in the air, causing the cuticle layer to lift and create frizz,’ explains Phillip.

Rather than trying to smooth your hair down, he recommends embracing your curls. ‘Try applying a curl product,’ he says. ‘These are designed to really deliver the extra moisture that curly hair needs, so when additional moisture from the weather comes into play it doesn’t make it so frizzy.’

With Phillip's expert advice in mind, we've rounded up 10 celebrity hairstyles that work with your hair, rather than against it, to keep mature, frizz-prone strands looking chic through humid and rainy weather.

French comb bun

Trade in your claw clip for a chicer alternative (and a favourite of Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh): the French comb.

Not only is it practical enough to keep your hair neatly tucked into place, but it can also create the illusion of extra volume.

While a French twist might take a little more handiwork than your go-to claw clip bun, OSMO Ambassador and award-winning hairstylist Jude Taylor tells us it won't take more than five minutes.

'Simply gather the hair at the nape of your neck, twist it upwards, folding it in on itself, and secure with the French comb,' he says.

If you have longer locks, take inspiration from Demi Moore's elegant swirled ballerina bun.

Start by brushing your hair back before twisting the lengths into a bun. For a softer, more effortless finish, gently pull out a few face-framing strands at the front.

For curly hair inspiration, take a cue from Halle Berry. Rather than trying to smooth your curls down, embrace your natural texture.

As Phillip recommends, use a high-quality curl product to deliver extra moisture and enhance definition for a glossy, frizz-resistant finish. Very chic.

If you're short on time and don't have a moment to put your hair up, take inspiration from Helen Mirren's clever, fuss-free styling trick.

A simple headband is an easy way to keep your hair off your face while still looking polished. As your lengths are left down, finish with a lightweight hair oil to help tame any frizz.

If you have longer curls and would prefer to keep your hair off your face, take inspiration from Alison Hammond's braided style.

Braids are a practical choice for humid weather, helping to keep your hair neatly in place while minimising frizz throughout the day. Plus, they'll keep you looking polished whatever the weather has in store.

Boyfriend bob

If updos aren't your style, consider a haircut that works with your natural texture instead. Kristin Scott Thomas' boyfriend bob does just that.

'It's cool, relaxed, easy to wear and won't take much styling,' says Phillip.

Designed to look effortlessly chic with minimal effort, it's an ideal choice for humid days when you're happy to embrace your hair's natural movement.

The low ponytail is perhaps the easiest hairstyle of all, yet it looks elegant every time. It works just as well on straight hair as it does on curls, as demonstrated by Andie MacDowell.

Simply gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure it with a hair tie. Add a hair bow or a chic scrunchie for an easy finishing touch.

Throw and go

A messy bun never fails to deliver. The best part? It doesn't need to be perfect, so even if the rain or humidity gets to it, it'll still look effortlessly chic.

Take inspiration from Jennifer Lopez. Start by pulling your hair into a high ponytail, then twist the lengths into a loose bun and secure with hair pins. Don't worry about making it too neat – the more effortless the finish, the better.

Sweeping pony

A high ponytail might not be groundbreaking beauty news, but it's a classic for a reason.

As Penélope Cruz demonstrates, it looks effortlessly chic. What's more, positioning your ponytail higher on the head can create the illusion of a more lifted appearance, subtly drawing the eye upwards.

If you have fragile or thinning hair, however, avoid pulling it too tightly and opt for a softer, looser ponytail or updo to help minimise tension on the scalp.

10

Single plait

Take inspiration from the Princess of Wales' classic single plait. While she wore it on a cold, rainy day, it's equally practical for warm, humid weather.

It's quick to do, looks chic and helps keep your hair neatly in place whatever the forecast.
