At last, the British sunshine has made a very welcome return. But alongside the Aperol spritzes and alfresco dinners (aka picky bits) comes a myriad of seasonal beauty frustrations many of us know all too well. High on the list? Sunglasses leaving an unwelcome dent in your makeup.
We’ve all been there. You’ve spent the morning perfecting your summer glow, only to lift your sunnies and discover two telltale marks staring back at you. Not exactly the most flattering of looks.
Having fallen victim to this one too many times myself, I knew I couldn’t be the only one battling these sunglasses-induced makeup mishaps. Naturally, I turned to our book of beauty experts – and thankfully, they had the answers.
‘When I’m prepping a celebrity for a red carpet or an outdoor festival, the summer heat is the ultimate equaliser,’ says celebrity makeup artist Ruby Hammer.
She adds, ‘The secret to an all-day look isn’t baking your face in heavy formulas – it’s about layering. In the summer, lightweight, high-performance textures that move with the skin are your best friend.’ In short, don’t just cake it on and hope for the best.
‘Glasses frames act like a tiny squeegee on warm skin,’ she explains. But the good news? The dreaded dent is entirely avoidable. ‘You can prevent this by keeping the bridge of your nose and cheekbones incredibly light on product,’ she explains.

‘If a dent does happen, don’t cake more foundation on top,’ she advises (guilty!). ‘Instead, tap a lightweight, hydrating concealer right into the spot using your ring finger. The warmth of your skin will blur the edges perfectly.’
‘It’s also important to clean your sunglasses before every use,’ adds Annabelle Taurua, beauty expert at Fresha. ‘Oil from your skin can easily transfer to your frames, which can then break down makeup.’
Annabelle also advises applying a small amount of loose powder to the bridge of your nose and the inner frame of your glasses as an extra preventative measure. ‘This creates a barrier, absorbs excess oil and stops makeup transfer,’ she explains.
She adds: ‘A cosmetic loose powder is a great option. Use a beauty blender or powder puff to apply – you can even use a little setting spray before dipping into your powder for longer-lasting hold.’
Preventing those telltale marks will help keep your summer base looking seamless and fresh, even in the scorching British sun.
Happy heatwave!
