Sun, sea, cocktails, restaurants... it’s easy to let your fitness goals fall by the wayside on holiday. So let’s take a moment to give thanks to our favourite health and beauty guru and bestselling author Liz Earle, who has shared the easy routine she relies on when she’s travelling and it’s hot, hot, hot – no gym or kit required.
‘Let’s start the week with some good vibes,’ Liz, 63, says in an Instagram post. ‘These are the moves I do when I’m away from home to get that daily movement in. I find these particularly helpful for building strength when I don’t have my trusty dumbbells to hand.’
So what does her exact routine look like? It’s broken down into four parts – and each and every one will help maintain strength and fitness when you’re away from home.
Number 1: Jumping on the spot
Inside her hotel room, Liz demonstrates an exercise that will get your heart rate up and build your bones – and it’s simply jumping on the spot. This simple exercise doesn’t just improve your cardiovascular fitness and maintain bone density, but it also strengthens muscles and boosts balance.
Number 2: Tricep dips
Using a chair from her room, Liz demonstrates a series of tricep dips – and recommends lifting a leg to make it more challenging. As well as strengthening the triceps, this exercise builds upper-body strength, engages the core and supports the sort of ‘functional fitness’ you need to make everyday life easier as you age.
Number 3: Jumping squats
Jumping squats combine a traditional squat with an explosive jump, making them a powerful lower-body exercise that also raises the heart rate. Jumping squats work the glutes, hamstrings and calves, helping to strengthen the major muscles of the legs, boost fitness and support bone health, as well as maintaining crucial core strength.
Number 4: Press-ups
Liz executes a perfect series of press-ups – but for anyone struggling, recommends this adaptation: ‘Do on your knees to make easier’. Press-ups are one of the most effective bodyweight exercises because they strengthen several muscle groups at once, building upper-body strength and strengthening the core. Press-ups also enhance shoulder stability, strengthening the muscles that support the shoulder joint. Fast and effective.
