Salter EK5857 Megastone Health Grill

Pros

  • Cooks quickly and evenly
  • Adjusts to different thicknesses
  • Versatile machine able to cook other foods

Cons

  • Doesn’t seal toastie edges

Score: 93/100

A deep-filled sandwich oozing with cheese is the ultimate toastie goal and this all-in-one toastie maker, panini press and health grill delivered just that. The lid adjusts to suit the thickness of your toastie, which means there’s always room for you to stack up the fillings.

After a swift preheat and just five minutes’ cooking in the test kitchen, our toasties were well-cooked, nicely browned, and had the perfect balance of soft, melted cheese and crispy toast.

Note this one doesn’t cut and seal your sandwiches, so some filling may ooze out. The non-removable plates make it tricky to clean too. That said, they’re non-stick, so food residue slid right off on test.

Pros

  • Preheats and cooks quickly
  • Slim, compact design that can be stored on its side
  • Comes with a great selection of recipes and tips

Cons

  • Outer casing gets quite hot

Score: 90/100

For melting toastie goodness, look no further. This compact, affordable sandwich toaster comes with clear instructions, heats up in just over two minutes and is easy to clean. Our sandwiches were a resounding success, cooking evenly, with a golden exterior and oozing centre, in around five minutes, while paninis took just two minutes with equally scrumptious results.

There’s room for generously filled toasties, but our edges didn’t always seal completely, so watch out for escaping filling. Note also that, somewhat counterintuitively, when the green light turns off, this means it’s ready to toast. That minor niggle aside, this is a robust machine that will get a lot of use.

Pros

  • Removable plates and dishwasher safe
  • Comes with interchangeable grill plates and sandwich plates

Cons

  • Quite big and heavy

Score: 89/100

If you like having options, then this versatile grill-meets-toaster is a no-brainer. Two sets of cooking plates mean you can alternate according to what’s on your menu. The sandwich plates accommodate medium slices of bread, and their depth allows you to pack your sarnies full of all the good stuff. Ours emerged evenly toasted, with perfectly melted cheese (both dairy and vegan) and no runaway filling to mop up.

It cooked paninis well but was a little too small for them, pushing some of the bread out of the machine. It’s quite bulky, too, but it has a premium feel and cleaned easily, so if you’ve got the cupboard space, it’s an excellent multi-tasking investment.

Pros

  • Excellent ‘cut and seal’ creates sealed triangles
  • Great value

Cons

  • Browning was a little uneven

Score: 89/100

Cook up a toastie in less than 10 minutes with this steal. Heating in just over two minutes, turn it on while you prepare your filling and then wait just four-and-a-half minutes to cook your sarnie to a crisp finish.

Nothing oozed out of the compact design, thanks to its reliable seal, but it didn’t brown or heat up quite as evenly as we’d have liked, leaving one side of the sandwich slightly hotter than the other. That said, it was easy to clean and store, making it a snack time game-changer for busy kitchens.

Cons

  • No on/off switch – just plugs in

Score: 88/100

Making a toastie doesn’t get much easier than this. After just one minute 43 seconds, the green indicator light turned on to tell us the sandwich maker was ready for cooking. Then five minutes later a well-sealed toastie was ready for our testers to tuck into.

The non-stick plates (which wipe clean) meant our toastie came out easily, and our testers praised the crisp results and well-melted cheese – even with our vegan toastie.

Its sleek design makes it easy to tuck away in the cupboard. But the outer casing wasn’t cool to the touch during cooking, so take care to always use the handle, watch for any steam on opening and leave time for it to cool down.

Pros

  • Fantastic value for money

Cons

  • Slightly undersized

Score: 84/100

Students, this one’s for you. Simple, easy to use, and one of the cheapest toastie makers we’ve tested, it’s a steal that speedily turns out crisp toasties, which are cooked evenly throughout. They were invitingly golden, too, with oozing melted cheese.

During testing, the top plates pushed some of the sandwich edges out a little, resulting in undercooked crusts, but we can forgive this small niggle. This simple toastie maker would make a great go-to for easy meals and snacks, whatever the time of day.

Pros

  • Large capacity
  • Easy to clean with effective non-stick and no dirt traps

Cons

  • Instructions are vague and lack cooking advice

Score: 82/100

A real family-feeder, this will cook four sandwiches at once. Our toasties proved easy to make, thanks to instructive diagrams in the otherwise slightly vague instructions. They also came out golden and well-sealed, losing none of their filling.

The non-stick coating came good, making cleaning a breeze, and built-in storage means the cord packs away neatly. Its non-slip feet lack grip and its ready light is slightly confusing – like our winner, it turns off when the machine is hot enough to toast.

That said, the delicious results make these qualms easy to set aside, especially if you’ve got a lot of hungry mouths to feed.

Pros

  • Cooks quickly and evenly
  • Dishwasher-safe cooking plates

Cons

  • Edges get slightly overcooked

Score: 82/100

Breville claims the plates on this machine are the deepest in its sandwich toaster range, which means you can cram as much filling into your toastie as you’d like. It delivered for us, producing perfectly golden sandwiches with beautifully melted cheese and no leaky filling.

The slick design is compact and easy to clean, thanks to dishwasher-safe, removable cooking plates. The first time you use it, it has a slightly plasticky smell, but the instructions warn of this and by the end of our first batch of toasties, it had gone. We also found that the casing reached over 80°C during cooking, so be careful.

Daewoo Deep Fill Sandwich/ Toastie Maker

Pros

  • Sleek yet sturdy design
  • Preheats quickly

Cons

  • Some filling leaked out of the seal

Score: 80/100

This toastie maker is sleek and compact, but it’s still got room for serious amounts of ham and cheese. It heated up quickly without the exterior getting too hot, but one of our sandwiches was a scorching 99°C when we took it out, so make sure you let them cool down before eating!

The sandwiches browned and crisped up well and the bread fitted nicely within the plate. The cut and seal function didn’t quite close all the edges, leading to some spilt filling, but this is a sturdy toastie maker that gets the job done without taking up too much precious kitchen space.

Pros

Cons

Score: 80/100

If you want to make a statement in your kitchen, then this handbag-inspired design complete with rose gold accents will do just that. It won’t be a look for everyone, but what will be universally popular is its speed – it heated up in under two minutes and cooked sandwiches in less than six.

It’s compact, but with ample room for two sandwiches, and it closed easily in testing. It left no edges sticking out from the plates when shut, but it didn’t brown evenly, leaving different shades on the top and bottom slices. On the plus side, it’s easy to clean and its unique aesthetic makes for a fun talking point over lunch!

Breville Stuff 'n' Press Deep Fill Toastie Maker

Pros

  • Detachable plates are dishwasher safe
  • Easy to close and seals well

Cons

  • Slightly undersized for two toasties
  • Outer casing gets hot

Score: 78/100

There’s no need to hold back on fillings with this toastie maker, which has deep plates to accommodate generously loaded sandwiches. It’s easy to close with a well-weighted lid and a good seal that won’t let cheese escape. The non-stick plates detach for easy cleanup – and they can go in the dishwasher, too.

It’s a little slow to preheat, taking almost five minutes, but it cooked up a crisp toastie in a passable six. The browning was a little uneven, and cooking two toasties at once was a bit of a squeeze (there was some crust overhang). We’d prefer an on/off switch instead of just using the wall plug, too. But for lovers of loaded toasties, this is a good buy.

Quest Deep Fill Toastie Maker

Pros

  • Large plates can accommodate crusts and lots of filling
  • Excellent ‘cut and seal’ action

Cons

  • Exterior casing gets hot, including area near the handle

Score: 78/100

This toastie maker turns out sandwiches dreams are made of – evenly cooked, consistently golden and stuffed with plenty of filling thanks to its deep plates.

It got very hot by the handle, so don’t accidentally touch it during cooking, and we found that the cooking was longer than advertised – seven-and-a-half minutes as opposed to between two and four. The instructions also lack detail, but it seals the sandwiches excellently and generally performed well.

Philips 5000 Series Sandwich Maker

Pros

  • Comes with dishwasher-safe plates for toasties, paninis and waffles
  • Can be stored vertically

Cons

  • Some filling leaked out of the seal
  • External casing gets hot

Score: 72/100

This heats up in three-and-a-half minutes, leaving you just enough time to slice your cheese and arrange your filling.

We’d have liked the cooking time to be slightly shorter (it took six and a half minutes), but the tops were well-browned and crispy and the cheese nicely melted. They weren’t very well sealed, so some filling leaked but the removable plates easily slid out, and testers found them easy to wipe clean with a cloth.

Note, the external casing reached 72°C, so make sure to let the toastie maker cool before storing away.

How we test sandwich toasters

We always eat well during toastie maker testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute! We use each machine to make several toasties, including vegan options, timing how long it takes to heat up and cook the sandwiches. We then take the temperature of every toastie to check for consistency, and make sure the outside of the machine doesn't get too hot during use.

We assess the consistency of each sandwich's colour and note the evenness of toasting. Finally, we test how easy each appliance is to clean, because no one wants to spend hours scrubbing away burnt cheese.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute?

The Good Housekeeping Institute has been rigorously testing all kinds of kitchen gadgets – from toastie makers to stand mixers – for over a century. We use these products just like you would at home, seeing how quickly the heat up and toast, how well they brown, toast and seal our sandwiches and, most importantly for some, how much delicious filling we can pack in.

The protocols we review every toastie maker against are designed by our homes testing manager, Blossom Boothroyd. Blossom has seen thousands of products come through the Institute’s doors, and only the very best earn the Good Housekeeping Institute seal of approval.

All our test results are passed on to our senior homes and lifestyle writer, Megan Geall, and our homes writer, Jasmine Vorley, who pick out the crucial details to them into helpful shopping guides.

How to choose the best toastie maker

When choosing the best sandwich toaster, think about how you’ll use it. First, consider plate style: sealed triangular plates are great for classic cheese toasties, while flat or ridged plates suit thicker fillings, sourdough or paninis.

Non-stick plates make cleaning much easier, and removable plates are a bonus. Some toastie makers come with a range of plates that can be easily swapped in and out. This can transform your machine into a panini press or even a waffle maker.

A secure latch, non-slip feet, indicator lights and an on-off switch make cooking easier and safer. Size is also key – compact models (especially those that can be stored upright) are easier to store, while larger designs are better for families.

Are toastie makers worth buying?

While you can make toasties in a pan, the results you get from a dedicated toastie maker are unbeatable – and the process is much quicker and easier, too. Non-stick surfaces mean there’s less need for buttering bread and flipping, and models with classic triangular plates create the perfect sealed pocket.

Most toastie makers are fairly inexpensive, too, making them a small investment for a big lunch upgrade.

Which are the best toastie maker brands?

While there isn’t a single best toastie maker brand, Breville is probably most well-known, which is why we've featured several of its models on our list. However, our best sandwich toaster is by Salter: the Salter EK5857 Megastone Health Grill.

How long do you leave a sandwich in a toastie maker?

For soft white bread with a simple cheese filling, between three and five minutes should suffice. Exact timing depends on the model, the thickness of the bread and how full the sandwich is.

The toastie makers we’ve tested took between five and seven minutes to cook a cheese, ham and tomato toastie, which was perfectly crisp and thoroughly melted.

If you’re replacing an existing sandwich toaster, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.

The verdict: what is the best toastie maker?

Our best toastie maker is the Salter EK5857 Megastone Health Grill, which produces perfectly crisp sandwiches in five minutes, accommodates loaded fillings, and can be used to cook other foods too. Did we also mention it's under £40?

If you prefer a ‘sealing’ toastie maker that makes triangle-shaped pockets, the best version we’ve tested is the Breville VST091 Deep Fill 2 Slice Toastie Maker.

Breville also make our best budget buy, the Breville VST057 2 Slice Sandwich/Toastie Maker. Priced at less than £20, you can’t go far wrong. We think every student needs one...
