french pharmacy skincare

It used to be that a trip to Paris always meant a skincare shopping spree at the local pharmacie. Because French pharmacies are packed full of hardworking, affordable beauty products that deliver on their claims.

Luckily, you no longer have to get on the Eurostar to shop the best French pharmacy skincare staples – many of them are now widely available this side of the Channel and have become household names, from La Roche-Posay to Avène.

To ensure you’re shopping the very best and prove we haven't been mistaken all these years, the Good Housekeeping Institute beauty labs have put them to the test. The formulations were all assessed by experts at our sister lab in the US and then analysed here in the UK to make sure they are identical, while each product has also been used by Good Housekeeping editors as part of their skincare routine.

Here are our winners. Ooh la la.

    Embryolisse Lait-Créme Sensitive

    Now 20% Off

    Pros

    • Has fatty acids and vitamins
    • Quick-drying
    • Doubles as a makeup primer

    Cons

    • Consistency on the runny side

Formulated for sensitive skin, this fragrance-free moisturiser, which doubles as a makeup primer, is a go-to for Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. "It has been my ultimate choice for the past year," she says. "I like its smooth application, quick drying, and skin-plumping effects, and it sets a solid base for makeup without causing a cakey appearance or accentuating fine lines."

Formulated with vitamins and essential fatty acids to nourish skin sans irritation, the hypoallergenic cream can also be used as a soothing face mask. Note that one panel member did find the consistency to be runny, though.

    Lancôme Bi-Facil Makeup Remover

    Now 25% Off

    Pros

    • Earned a perfect testing score for fully removing makeup
    • Didn’t sting or irritate eyes or skin
    • Dissolves makeup quickly

    Cons

    • One tester said it left a greasy residue

A beloved skincare staple, this lab test winner is known for removing every last trace of eye makeup – even waterproof mascara.

The bi-phase formula contains both an oil and water phase to wash away all residue and leave skin cleansed. Gentle enough for sensitive skin and contact lens wearers, it earned a perfect score among our testers for fully removing makeup. It was also praised for not stinging or irritating skin or eyes, not being messy, having a pleasant scent, and dissolving makeup quickly.

“It removed my makeup quickly and was non-irritating to my eyes, unlike some products I've used,” one tester said. “I only needed one swipe to remove the makeup.” Another tester complained it left a slightly greasy residue behind, but that was the only niggle.

    Best makeup primer

    Best makeup primer

    Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch

    Pros

    • Smooths the appearance of fine lines, pores, and deep wrinkles
    • Hydrates
    • Preps skin for makeup application

    Cons

    • Some testers found the texture too thick

Yes, Clarins is a French pharmacy skincare classic. Create a smooth canvas for makeup with its multitasking primer, which does double duty, also smoothing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and pores with soft-focus pigments that blur. Plus, it contains vitamin E to nourish and hydrate, making it a good instant wrinkle filler.

“It blurred out the deep lines and made them less noticeable,” one tester said, while another added, “It's moisturising but not greasy. I was impressed with how it diminished my forehead wrinkles. The ‘elevens’ between the brows is a tough area, but I even noticed a slight improvement there.” However, some testers found the texture a little thick and said it didn’t fully blend into the skin.

    L'Occitane Shea Hand Cream

    Now 20% Off

    Pros

    • Made hands look and feel smooth
    • Improved the look of chapped/cracked/rough hands
    • Provided lasting moisture

    Cons

    • Scent was polarising

Once you slather on this ultra-rich (but not greasy) hand cream, you’ll see why it has a devoted following. Chock full of shea butter, it earned the top scores in our lab testing for improving hydration levels over six hours. It was also the highest-rated for making hands feel soft and look smooth, improving the appearance of chapped/cracked/rough hands, and providing lasting moisture.

“I like the smell, the consistency, and how soft it made my hands feel,” one tester said. “I am a nurse, so I am constantly washing my hands and applying lotion. This hand cream was fantastic, and I’ll be keeping it in my work bag!” But the scent was polarising, with some testers finding it a little strong and old-fashioned. That will come down to personal preference though.

    Best micellar water

    Vichy Pureté Thermale Micellar Water

    Pureté Thermale Micellar Water
    Best micellar water

    Vichy Pureté Thermale Micellar Water

    Pros

    • Quickly dissolves makeup
    • Doesn’t sting or irritate skin
    • Leaves skin smooth

    Cons

    • Some said it left skin feeling sticky

According to beauty lore, French women exclusively use micellar water to cleanse their faces, allegedly because the hard tap water in Paris is known for irritating their skin.

Well, prepare to stock up. This micellar water came out on top in lab testing, ranking the best for making skin feel clean and earning the highest satisfaction score. It also received top marks for being easy to dispense and spread evenly, not being messy, quickly dissolving makeup, not depositing an oily residue, leaving skin smooth, and not stinging or causing irritation.

“This product did not sting my eyes and worked great for removing waterproof eyeliner,” one tester said, while another shared, “My skin felt very clean, soft, and smooth after I used the product. No tacky feeling as with many micellar waters.” That said, one tester said their skin felt sticky afterwards, so you can't win 'em all!

GH's household advice writer, Ella Duggan, swears by this facial SPF50 from La Roche-Posay. She says it's the only one that doesn't leave behind any white cast, or cause any breakouts. This is down to the oil control technology, which absorbs any excess sebum from your skin, leaving behind a matte finish. No shiny foreheads around here.
