best coverless duvet

Changing your bedding can sometimes feel like a real workout – all that sheet wrangling can be exhausting. But, here to take the hassle out of this weekly (or fortnightly if we're being honest) chore are the best coverless duvets.

Relatively new to the market, we were keen to see if they really deliver the convenience and comfort they promise. So, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute put them through rigorous testing in the lab and at home with the help of some sleepy testers.

The best coverless duvets for 2026

Whether you’re after a stylish design for your guest room or you want a simple, budget-friendly bedspread that's easy to wash for a child's bedroom, we've found a range of options worth splashing out on.

And if our tested options aren't quite right, then our editors have also included some of their favourite designs below, so you'll be sure to find something that suits your needs.

To find the best on the market, we asked our panel of at-home testers to trial a range of coverless duvets for two to three weeks and share their thoughts on design, comfort, washing and breathability. You'll find their verdict in our reviews below, along with our detailed buying guide.

All prices listed are for a standard double duvet.

How we test coverless duvets

how we test coverless duvets

Coverless duvets are fairly new to the UK market so we were keen to see how they performed, and whether they could measure up to a duvet + bedding combo. So, we asked our panel of at-home testers to put a range market-leading brands to the test at home, sleeping with them for a few weeks and then feeding back in forensic detail on the things that matter.

They told us how the material felt against their skin, and what they thought of the design (e.g. did it feel good quality, was it plump with evenly-distributed filling, did it fit their mattress well, and did it blend seamlessly and stylishly with their interiors). They also told us whether they found it cosy to sleep with, while still being breathable at night. Finally, they let us know whether they would recommend the coverless duvet to friends and family.

Back in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, each duvet is first assessed for overall quality, construction and size. We then wash and dry them three times, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, checking for any shrinkage or change in appearance. Finally, we measure any colour fading using our specialist DigiEye machine.

As this is a relatively new bedding category, in our list below, we've also included a selection of duvets chosen by our editors to cater to every need and budget. They haven't been reviewed in the lab, but they are from brands that have been tested, and we've done detailed research to make sure they won't disappoint.

Tufted Dots Coverless Duvet, 10.5 Tog
Best coverless duvet

Night Lark Tufted Dots Coverless Duvet, 10.5 Tog

Pros

  • Well constructed with no loose stitching
  • Minimal shrinkage and no fading in the wash
  • Comes with a handy storage bag
  • Made in a zero waste factory, which runs on 100% certified renewable energy

Cons

  • The double 10.5 tog duvet was a tight fit in a standard washing machine
  • Not everyone loved the design and textured finish

Score: 97/100

Available in a choice of warm sand or dusk blue shades, with a dotted textured finish, our experts found this coverless duvet well made and sturdy, with secure stitching. It didn't fade in the wash and there was minimal shrinkage.

The built-in cover is crafted with peachskin microfibres for a silky soft finish and it has a 100% Smartfil® Polyester filling from recycled PET bottles, which, as well as being more eco-friendly and hypoallergenic, is designed to hold its shape wash after wash.

Our panel said it was lightweight, yet warm (we tested the 10.5 tog option, but there's also a 4.5 tog version available), and liked that it came with its own duffel storage bag. The design proved a little divisive – some would have preferred a smooth finish and there are only the two colour options – but otherwise, it was soft to the touch, straightforward to wash and quick-drying.

Slumberdown Coverless Duvet Double 10.5-Tog

Pros

  • Comfortable and airy
  • Easy to unpack
  • Clear instructions
  • Dries quickly

Cons

  • It did shrink a bit in the wash
  • Our testers had concerns about durability of the fabric
  • The grey tones weren't for everyone

Score: 93/100

You get two designs for the price of one with this reversible (and hypoallergenic) Slumberdown duvet and matching pillowcases. Whether you opt for grey stripes or the embossed waffle design, both can be flipped for a plain, but stylish block colour reverse.

Our testers found this duvet lightweight and airy, and it comes generously stuffed with hollow fibres for added softness and bounce. It was also easy to unpack, had clear washing instructions and dried quickly.

It did shrink a bit in our wash tests and some of our panel raised concerns about the long-term durability of the fabric. However, it's a solid pick for comfort and convenience. We think it would work well for spare bedrooms.

Soft Weave Coverless Duvet

Night Larke Soft Weave Coverless Duvet

Pros

  • Storage bag included
  • Filling remains well distributed even after washing
  • Suitable for hot sleepers

Cons

  • Heavy when wet
  • Wrinkles after washing

Score: 87/100

Stylish and soft are two things we love to hear when it comes to duvets (whether coverless or not) – and these were the exact words used by our panel in their feedback.

They thought the colourway and quilted pattern felt timeless and would suit a range of bedroom styles, and the soft microfibre outer layer felt comfortable against people's skin. The set also comes with matching pillowcases.

The 10.5 tog filling makes it suitable for year-round use too, with testers describing it as lightweight and comforting, with no overheating reported. Some found that it slipped off the bed easily, so it may not be one for fidgety sleepers and it took a while to dry after washing, so that’s worth factoring this into your laundry schedule.

Silentnight Coverless Duvet and Pillowcase Set

Pros

  • Well-constructed
  • Doesn’t require shaking to distribute filling
  • Quiet in use

Cons

  • Some found the seersucker fabric cold to touch
  • Was too bulky for some home machines

Score: 79/100

This coordinated set is extremely soft, felt well made, and it's also reversible, depending on your mood. Just flip the bold berry over it you want to go for something more minimal.

It exceeded expectations with our panellists too, who found it cosy yet cool, and said it fitted well on their mattresses. “I liked the way the duvet kept its shape and style,” said one, noting that it still looked great after washing and drying.

Some did feel it could be slightly thicker, however, despite its 10.5 tog.

Pros

  • Comes with a handy storage bag
  • Maintains quality wash after wash

Cons

  • Some testers found the material a little slippery

Score: 79/100

This colourful set comes in a handy storage bag with coordinating pillowcases. The built-in cover is made from silky peachskin microfibres, which feel really soft against the skin, and the Smartfil fibre filling (which is made from recycled bottles) retained its quality wash after wash in our tests. The duvet is lightweight, but also kept our testers nice and warm. One person even said it kept them cosy on a camping trip!

The design divided our panel, but we think the bright leopard print would be great for a teen's bedroom or anyone who loves colour.

Plus, there are lots of other styles to choose from, such as reversible palm trees and stripes, and rainbow polka dots. More is more!

ASDA Lightweight Coverless Duvet 7.5 tog

ASDA Lightweight Coverless Duvet 7.5 tog

Pros

  • Can be washed and dried in a day
  • Comes with two pillowcases

Cons

  • Not the softest, cosiest duvet
  • Limited colour options

Score: 71/100

A budget-conscious option, this comes with two pillowcases and a storage bag, making it a reliable pick for kids’ sleepovers and camping trips.

It did a good job of temperature regulation, with one tester saying: “It provides an adequate level of warming without being too hot.” However it’s not the softest option in this round-up and some found it a little rigid. In fact, one person said, “I felt like a sandwich and the duvet was a piece of bread that laid on top.”

But, given the price, we weren't expecting a premium buy. It's a quick, convenient option to whip out when you have some unexpected guests.

That said, although there’s no need to wrestle with a duvet cover, getting it back into its storage bag was a bit of a struggle, so it may be best to store it in a blanket pile or pop it in the airing cupboard.

Are coverless duvets worth it?

If you struggle with changing your bedding, or it's simply one of those chores you're always putting off, they're certainly worth it. In fact, they have multiple benefits.

  • They're more hygienic as they can be washed regularly than standard duvets, removing any allergens.
  • They're also more cost effective, saving on trips to the dry cleaners and spending on new duvet covers.
  • They're space-saving, as you can say goodbye to piles of duvet covers in your cupboards. Some even come with their own bags for easy storage.

They're particularly handy for younger children and teenagers who may be prone to spillages, as well as for camping trips and travel where bedding can often get muddy, or for anyone who just needs a helping hand with their laundry (read: students). Some people also like to use them in guest bedrooms, as they can be easily freshened up before visitors arrive.

How to choose a coverless duvet

The right coverless duvet for you will depend on few different factors. Tog count is one to consider as it determines warmth – higher togs are generally better for colder months, while lighter options suit hot sleepers and the summer season.

If you struggle with allergies, you may want to look for a design that's hypoallergenic, as it reduces the risk of a reaction.

And as you can't change the cover here, the design is another key decision. Luckily there’s plenty of choice in our round-up, with a mix of simple styles and bolder patterns.

Can you get different designs and togs?

Yes, there are a wide selection of colours and designs available on the market, from florals to ginghams. Just bear in mind that you'll want to hold onto your duvet for a couple of years, so avoid anything you think you'll tire of quickly. A classic stripe or neutral block colour is always a safe pick.

Many coverless duvets also come in a range of togs – a light 4.5 tog one will make the best summer duvet, while a weightier 10.5 tog option will make a top winter duvet. They also come in a range of sizes from single to super king. Note that higher tog, super king options will be more of a squeeze for your washing machine, so read the manufacturer's advice before buying.

How to wash and dry a coverless duvet

One of the main benefits of a coverless duvet is that you can simply put it in the machine and press start, without having to faff around with separate covers. This makes it particularly practical for children’s rooms or spare bedrooms.

Most coverless duvets can be tumble-dried on a low heat setting, helping you get them back on the bed quickly. Just make sure to check the care label first, as washing and drying instructions can vary from brand to brand.

Generally, you should wash your coverless duvet every one to two weeks, in the same way as you would the rest of your bedding.

“We’d recommend more frequent washing compared to a regular duvet as it comes into direct contact with the skin,” says Danielle Mason, Head of Product Development at The Fine Bedding Company. “We’d therefore advise washing your coverless duvet every two weeks (or weekly, depending on how often you like to wash your bedding) to ensure a hygienic bedroom environment (avoiding the build up of dirt, dead skin cells, dust mites and makeup).”

Most brands recommend washing between 30 and 40C.

The verdict on coverless duvets

Our winner, the Night Lark Tufted Dots Coverless Duvet, ticked all our boxes – it’s washable, stylish and functional, helping our panel enjoy a great night’s sleep. It earns bonus points for its eco-credentials with a polyester filling made from recycled PET bottles, too.

Our runner up, Silentnight's Coverless Duvet and Pillowcase Set, is also our best budget option on the list. It's extremely soft on the skin, washes quickly, and comes in at just under £30.

Get two coverless duvets for the price of one with Slumberdown's Coverless Duvet, as the reversible design means you can choose between a patterned or plain side. Thankfully, this one feels as good as it looks, as testers found it both lightweight and cosy.
